History

Background[]

Natasha Romanova was trained in the Black Widow Ops Program to become the spy known as the Black Widow. She later went on a path of redemption, joining the Avengers, the Champions of Los Angeles and S.H.I.E.L.D.[1]

Black Widow was crystalized by the Collector and taken to the Battlerealm to participate in the Contest of Champions.

Contest of Champions: Book 1[]

Ultron's Assault[]

Avengers (Earth-517) from Marvel Contest of Champions 002

The Avengers standing against Ultron.

When Ultron attempted to conquer the Battlerealm, Black Widow was recruited into a team of Avengers by the Collector to help the Summoner against the rogue A.I.[2]

Rebellion[]

Following Ultron's defeat, Black Widow was put back into her crystal. She was later released along with other dormant Champions by Guillotine on the Collector's orders as a last ditch effort to stop the Maestro after learning of his plans. The Summoner was then informed by Romanova that the Maestro had forged an ISO-8 superweapon that could threaten the Multiverse.[3]

Cosmic Civil War[]

When the Collector was weakened by the Genesis Stone, a Cosmic Civil War broke out among the Champions of the Contest. Black Widow ideologically sided with Iron Man's Iron Faction, who shared the goal of defeating the Collector and using the ISO-Sphere to free everyone. Falcon, aligned with the opposing Blue Faction, confronted Natasha in an attempt to get Iron Man's location.[4]

Infinity War[]

After Black Panther scattered the Infinity Stones across the Battlerealm, Black Widow was sent in a battlegroup to retrieve the Nightmare Stone. Romanova worried that the stone's abilities would mess with the Winter Soldier's mind, though T'Challa reassured her that his issues were resolved by Shuri. The battlegroup retrieved the stone from Proxima Midnight, though they were ultimately tricked into the Death Stone's mirror dimension. Without anyone to oppose them, the Nameless effortlessly retrieved the Illuminati's Infinity Stones for Thanos.[5]

With a completed Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos became the supreme being in the Battlerealm. Black Widow was among the heroes who fled to the Astral Plane to escape Thanos' cosmic wrath. Fortunately, Thanos was defeated by the combined efforts of the Summoner, Doctor Strange, and M.O.D.O.K., returning life to normal in the Battlerealm.[6]

Avengers Forever[]

When Ronin came to the Avengers in search of Captain America, Black Widow recognized him as a variant of Clint Barton. The Avengers, including Black Widow, then went along with Ægon to assemble a team capable of taking down Ronin's Thanos. They arrived at Wakanda after exploring all of the realities within the Battlerealm, where they encountered Ebony Maw attempting to resurrect their Thanos. Despite his defeat, Maw summoned some Thanos variants into T'Challa's throne room to overwhelm his foes. The Thanos variants were defeated, leaving the Summoner and the Avengers to face Ronin's Thanos, who was also defeated by them.[7]

Amazing Fantasy[]

Black Widow and Vision requested the Summoner to help them find doppelgangers of themselves. They immediately noticed Aarkus and Captain America interrogating Loki for the whereabouts of a sorceress. As Captain America introduced everyone and explained Aarkus' mission, Loki escaped. As a replacement, Aarkus led everyone to Joe Fixit, who put them on a chase that eventually led them to Diablo, who revealed he attacked them and controlled Scarlet Witch to avoid punishment from Claire Voyant, who shares Romanova's Black Widow alias. They were able to track Voyant down to a dark cave, where the Summoner and Aarkus entered, leaving Natasha and Vision at the entrance in case she attempted to escape.[8]

The Immortal Hulk[]

When the Hulk was killed by an arrow to the Hypothalamus, Black Widow was quick to pin the blame on Hawkeye or one of his variants, citing the precision as evidence. When Barton reluctantly confessed, Black Widow had him arrested by the Summoner, after which he revealed that Bruce Banner himself had asked him to do so out of fear of an "Immortal Hulk" personality. Iron Man then reported that the Hulk's body had escaped from his lab, prompting them to search for him. Per Romanova's suggestion, they enlisted the aid of Professor X, who telepathically entered Hulk's mind and located him at the ruins of Shadow Base. There they encountered the Immortal Hulk, using abandoned Hulkbuster technology to build something. Heeding Banner's warning, the Summoner stopped Immortal Hulk but unknowingly opened the Green Door in the process. The Immortal Hulk informed them that he was collaborating with Banner to close the Green Door, but they were now trapped in the Below-Place along with a chunk of the Battlerealm. To free Black Widow and the rest of the group, the Summoner defeated the One Below All's Immortal Abomination.[9]

Contest of Champions: Book 2[]

Black Widow one of the Champions put under Mojo's spell and forced to participate in Spider-Ham's drama, All My Iron Men. She and the others were freed by Spider-Ham after Spider-Man pointed out the machine controlling them.[10]

Black Widow was later impersonated by Scytalis, who was tasked with infiltrating the Avengers to prevent them from working with Carina.[11]
