History
After killing his last team of X-Men, Master Zhao decided to genetically-engineer a new team based on the original X-Men. Locating five Beta-level mutants[1] with similar gifts, Zhao augmented them to become more powerful and more closely match the original five. In the process, however, these "Chosen" became genetically unstable and prone to burnt out and death.
