Captain Goomba is a large Goomba who wears a pirate hat and has his own crew of Pirate Goombas in Mario Party 8. He appears on a board named Goomba's Booty Boardwalk where he gives the player a free Star if they get to him. In Star Battle Arena, the player or the opponent must collect 50 coins and make it to him first (with 50 coins for the star). If the player gets to him with less than 50 coins, his crew shoots the player back to the start.

Captain Goomba seems to be generous when it comes to giving the player coins and stars. In the Party Tent version, the star is free. He gives the player a star if they reach him. This is a little different in Star Battle Arena. In this version of Goomba's Booty Boardwalk (second stage of said mode), the star is 50 coins. And the player or the opponent wins by getting one star (from Captain Goomba) for 50 coins. He (Captain Goomba) still gives the player or the opponent a star. But the star is 50 coins. (In the said stage, the player or the opponent wins by acquiring one star. And the star is 50 coins. They must collect 50 coins and make it to Captain Goomba first to get a star.) If the player gets to Captain Goomba with less than 50 coins and can't pay for the star, he --Captain Goomba-- lets the player (if they can't pay for it) roll a coin block. (He states that the player should have no victory. But they can have as many coins of what they can roll.) After the player rolls the coin block to get coins, Captain Goomba orders his Pirate Goombas to send them back to the start. Then the Pirate Goombas stuff the player into their cannon and blast them back to the start.
Captain Goomba seems to have stolen a lot of treasure as a pirate, but his treasure is said to not be comparable with those from the sacred island, which can be reached with the Lucky Space. His crew of Pirate Goombas appear to be very loyal to him, as they obey his every order, for example shooting the player back to the start if they don't have enough coins in a duel game. However, Captain Goomba will order two seagulls to fly the player back to the start in a multiplayer party. He resides on the last island of his boardwalk with a volcano behind him, and surrounded by his chests full of gold, jewels, and stars.

- Unique to the Goomba's Booty Boardwalk stage of Star Battle Arena, Captain Goomba still lets the player --who makes it to him (Captain Goomba) with less than 50 coins and can't pay for the star-- roll a Coin Block to get coins (even if they are in the effects of any yellow candy or Thwomp Candy). That is, even though all yellow and blue candies make the player bypass Candy Shops, Candy Spaces, and (exclusive to Star Battle Arena) Coin Block Area spaces.
