“ | Think fast, think faster! You are in a particularly unfriendly neighborhood, Spider Man! ~ Green Goblin to Spider-Man |
Norman Osborn, or better known as the Green Goblin, is the main antagonist of the animated TV series The Spectacular Spider-Man. He also becomes Spider-Man's most personal archenemy during the last few episodes.
As the Green Goblin, he was voiced by Steve Blum, who also voiced Amon in The Legend of Korra. As Norman Osborn, he was voiced by The late Alan Rachins.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Despite his corrupt businessman nature with no regard for human life and an abusive father towards Harry, and in general when pitted against other villains they are more rooted for and endangering civilians by the hundreds, it is hard to truly hate him even though he is Pure Evil because of his unique charm on both personas.
- As Norman Osborn he always has his unique cold and calculating charisma that helps him shut down every argument thrown at him with just a few words while manipulating everything to his favor at the same time, and even with that ends up managing to come across as a decent person to the public.
- As the Green Goblin, he is filled to the brim with hilarious lines and a wit so fast and good that he is one of the few villains to actually play along with Spider-Man's mid-fight banter and retorts which even impresses Spider-Man and would shrug off heavy losses with a laugh and say, "Oh well, better luck next time!"
- While pretty heinous and a decent keep as a Pure Evil, Green Goblin's crimes aren't really disgusting to override the charm he displays in both personas, being far from brutally sadistic and lacks the sheer visceral of the downright sadistic crimes of the series' other Pure Evil, the Venom symbiote, and that is all while being less petty and far more pragmatic as well with every crime he commits all having a larger and pragmatic purpose in mind.
- Makes a deal with Tombstone and making it entirely a win-win situation for him, creating supervillains for Tombstone and charging him fortunes to do so, pinning them against Spider-Man who he knows will beat them, and Osborn can also develop the prison cells used to hold said supervillains, making him rich twofold.
- Despite his generally abusive nature to Harry, he actually gave a pretty good advice to him to accept responsibility for his own actions and if he wants to achieve anything, he has to rely on himself and make his own decisions to achieve his own personal goals than relying on and blaming others.
- He backflips and lands back on his glider when it crashes through a building, leaving Spidey speechless.
- He fakes a leg injury and flees back to his apartment to arrive back home, change back to his Osborn attire, and walk normally to clear suspicion off himself.
- Dresses his son, Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin and breaks his leg to convince Spider-Man that Harry is the Goblin and makes Spider-Man silence the situation, to avoid Tombstone killing Harry.
- He's able to keep his true identity completely secret until the very end of the show, even hiring the Chameleon to disguise as himself to redirect suspicion on Spider-Man's real identity.
- He cleverly boobytraps Spider-Man several times, along with Tombstone in one instance by using info to expose him and kidnapping his right-hand Hammerhead to force him to the trap and wipe both Tombstone and Spider-Man in one fell swoop, nearly succeeding in doing so.
- With Hammerhead's (likely accidental) assistance, which mostly happened thanks to Osborn's words to him, he eventually successfully usurps Tombstone's position as the Big Man of Crime, putting Doc Ock and Silvermane behind bars as well, all by pitting them against each other to start a gang war and occupy the power vacuum that it will create in the aftermath.
- Manages to convince dozens of thugs to join him with charisma, skillful intimidation, and threats.
- He stages a prison test and invites Spider-Man to lure him to another well-placed trap as he secretly frees every prisoner and causes chaos in the prison to orchestrate Spider-Man's death from the shadows and nearly succeeds in doing so.
- Due to the show's cancellation, he gets away with his crimes scot-free after faking his own death.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He is an emotionally abusive father to Harry Osborn and later puts him in the Goblin suit, making sure to injure his leg to frame him as the Green Goblin in order to turn Harry into an emotionally manipulative sociopath like him.
- He's directly responsible for Adrian Toomes (Vulture), Flint Marko (Sandman), Alexander O'Hirn (Rhino), Otto Octavius (Dr. Octopus) and Mark Allan (Molten Man) all becoming dangerous supervillains who threaten the lives of multiple civilians throughout the series, the latter one by unethically experimenting on him and even blackmailing him into being his own slave, and Doc Ock being painfully electrocuted by him to kickstart his villainy.
- He tries to bomb an entire ballroom containing innocent charity-goers and his own henchmen just to take out Tombstone, even laughing about how it'll "paint the town red".
- He sparks a gang war between Tombstone, Doc Ock, and Silvermane to become the new Big Man of Crime, threatening dozens of lives in the process.
- He killed several goons with a pumpkin bomb in Blackie Gaxton's bar.
- He boobytraps New York with bombs just to try and kill Spider-Man, thus endangering hundreds of innocent people during the series finale.
- His "I never apologize" catchphrase indicates that he feels no remorse for anything he does throughout the show.
