Icon-ghostThis article is about a set of collectible devices in Kamen Rider Ghost.

Eyecons (眼魂アイコン, Aikon) are eyeball-like devices used by the Riders from Kamen Rider Ghost. They are able to store a person's soul. Ghost Eyecons (ゴースト眼魂アイコン, Gōsuto Aikon, lit. "Ghost Eye Souls") contain heroic spirits, while Gamma Eyecons (眼魔ガンマ眼魂アイコン, Ganma Aikon, lit. "Eye Devil Eye Souls") are the vessels of the Gamma.

The Eyecons are the core of the Eyecon System (眼魂アイコンシステム, Aikon Shisutemu) designed by Edith and manifested by the Great Eye. In order to survive the Red Death, a person's body is preserved in a life support capsule while their soul is stored in a Gamma Eyecon. Ghost Eyecons were created later and can be used in a Ghost Driver to transform into a Kamen Rider and utilize the powers of the heroic spirits.

Once the Great Eye left Earth, the Eyecon System stopped functioning, causing almost all Eyecons to cease to exist. The only known Eyecons which continue to exist are the Ghost Eyecons possessed by the Kamen Riders and transformation Gamma Eyecons, while the whereabouts of 71 Hero Eyecons following the dissolution of the Island of Eyecons remains unknown.

Design

A standard Eyecon is composed of the following parts:

  • Phantom Entrance (ファントムエントランス, Fantomu Entoransu): An entrance to the inside of the Eyecon, it is how Parka Ghosts are able to enter and exit the Eyecon. It is located at the top of the Eyecon, just below the Eyeconic Plate.
  • Spirit Harken (スピリットハーケン, Supiritto Hāken): The four semi-oval shaped arches placed diagonally at the outer surface of the Eyecon, it is what keeps the Eyecon in place when placed into the Ghost Driver or the Sunglasseslasher. The Spirit Harkens hold high-purity energy generated by the ghosts inside the Eycons, and ensures the Eyecon does not explode from the amount of energy.
  • Sclera Sphere (スクレラスフィア, Sukurera Sufia): The clear outer surface attached to the front of the Eyecon. It is a shield generator that wraps the Eyecon in a defensive shield that prevents damage to the Eyecon. The clear parts have excellent durability, and and almost all physical attacks will not scratch it.
  • Quad Iris (クアッドアイリス, Kuaddo Airisu) - The front black portion of the Eyecon, it is a monitor that displays the Eyecon's state, and indicates one of the four states (Standby, Startup, Transformation or Move Invocation) at a time.
  • Eyeconic Plate (アイコニックプレート, Aikonikku Purēto): The graphic seal placed on top of the Eyecon, it displays what Damashii is present inside of it. The Eeyconic Plate displays the Pantheon, or faceplate, the Rider will put on upon transformation.
  • Ghost Liberator (ゴーストリベレイター, Gōsuto Ribereitā): The button at the side of the Eyecon, pressing it activates the energy release system of the Eyecon. After pressing the Ghost Liberator, putting the Eyecon inside of the Ghost Driver will allow transformation.

Ghost Eyecons

Ghost 32

The 15 blank Ghost Eyecons

A Ghost Eyecon contains the soul of a deceased hero or great historical figure. Obtaining 15 such Eyecons enables one to contact the Great Eye and have their wish granted. Possessing a Ghost Eyecon allows one to perceive ghostly creatures such as the Gamma. Ghost Eyecons are able to possess people in a similar manner to Gamma Eyecons.

The Ghost Eyecons have a Quad Iris (クアッドアイリス, Kuaddo Airisu), which cycles between four settings when the Ghost Liberator (ゴーストリベレイター, Gōsuto Ribereitā) button is pressed.

  1. Standby Time (待機時, Taiki-ji): the standard blank setting. Ghost's Eyecons have a default black, while Specter has blue, and Necrom has green. The odd one out of the set is Ghost's Mugen Eyecon, which is a rainbow.
  2. Startup Time (起動時, Kidō-ji): activates when pressing the Eyecon's right side, revealing a letter or a two-digit number. The odd one out of the set is Ghost's Mugen Eyecon, which instead reveals an infinity symbol.
  3. Transformation Time (変身時, Henshin-ji): activates when transforming, revealing an icon that is associated with the Ghost Eyecon's Damashii form's faceplate. Any Eyecon that falls under Necrom's control has a frame associated with the Ghost Eyecon's Damashii form surround Necrom's Various Goggle.
  4. Move Invocation Time (技発動時, Waza Hatsudō-ji): activates when using an Omega Drive finisher.

Gamma Eyecons

The Gamma Eyecons contain the souls of people from the Gamma World and can act independently. They are usually summoned through a ritual.

Once a Gamma Eyecon crosses over into the physical world, it transforms into a Gamma Assault (眼魔アサルト, Ganma Asaruto) with its humanoid form referred to by TV-Asahi as the Primal Body (素体, Moto-tai). The Gamma can gain a unique body of their own by bonding to an inanimate object. The Gamma's sole purpose is obtain Ghost Eyecons and can forcibly merge with the Parka Ghost of a Ghost Eyecon to become a Giant Gamma.

The Gamma Eyecons are able to possess people, and will gain complete control after 99 days. Kamen Rider Ghost and others can draw an eye symbol in the air to expel the Gamma Eyecon from the person's body.

Based on Akari's research, it seems that the Gamma Eyecons are impervious to damage other than from a Rider a modified Shiranui formula. However Adel was seen crushing a Gamma Eyecon using his bare hand.

The Gamma Eyecons can also be used to convey messages by means of visual projection.

Creation

Sennin explains that there are three conditions to create a Ghost Eyecon:

  1. An object connected to the spirit is needed.
  2. A person with strong feelings or a connection to the spirit must be present. Only sincere and genuine feelings will bring out the Eyecons. Any Gamma possession of the human will fail to bring out Eyecons.
  3. An eye symbol gesture is performed on the item to bring the spirit into the mortal realm as a Parka Ghost. Alternately, the person with strong feelings for the spirit can be sacrificed to summon the Parka Ghost.

If the summoned Parka Ghost enters a Ghost Driver, the corresponding Eyecon is created.

As shown later on in the series, more powerful Eyecons can be created via other means. The Toucon Boost Eyecon was created by Ryu Tenkuji fusing his own spirit with Takeru's, while the Deep Specter Eyecon was created by Edith using power from the Gammaizers. Particularly strong emotions and feelings can result in the creation of highly powerful Eyecons, as evidenced by the Mugen, Sin Specter, and Yujou Burst Eyecons.

List of Ghost Eyecons

Rather than containing the souls of historical figures, these Eyecons are used to transform into a Rider's base or upgrade forms.

The Ore Ghost Eyecon (オレゴースト眼魂アイコン, Ore Gōsuto Aikon, lit. "My Ghost Eyecon") is used in the Ghost Driver to release the Ore Ghost (オレゴースト, Ore Gōsuto), which transforms Kamen Rider Ghost into his default form, Ore Damashii. This Eyecon also contains Takeru Tenkuji's soul. Its code is G, its Standby Time setting is grey, and its Move Invocation setting shows a kicking foot.

The Ore Ghost Eyecon was originally a blank Ghost Eyecon that Ryu Tenkuji had arranged to be sent to his son ten years in advance. After Takeru received the Eyecon on his 18th birthday, he was killed by the Katana Gamma. When he is revived as a Ghost by Sennin, the Eyecon takes its current form.

The Ore Eyecon was temporarily destroyed by Gammaizer Gravity, causing Takeru to disappear and shattering the Eyecon into seven pieces which were each claimed by one of his friends. The Ore Eyecon was restored alongside Takeru when the feelings of his friends connected to his spirit.

The Ore Eyecon and Takeru's Ghost Driver both became unresponsive when Takeru was infected with the Pac-Man Virus.

This Eyecon only appears in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie Wars Genesis. It was created when Ryu Tenkuji's soul absorbed the Musashi, Newton, Robin, Billy the Kid and Beethoven Ghost Eyecons. After the defeat of the Renaissance Gamma, the Tousan Eyecon disappears along with Ryu's soul. The appearance and functionality of the Tousan Ghost Icon is identical to the Toucon Boost Ghost Icon that would appear in the main series.

The Toucon Boost Ghost Eyecon (闘魂ブーストゴースト眼魂アイコン, Tōkon Būsuto Gōsuto Aikon, lit. "Fighting Spirit Boost Ghost Eyecon") is used in the Ghost Driver to release the Toucon Boost Ghost (闘魂ブーストゴースト, Tōkon Būsuto Gōsuto), which transforms Kamen Rider Ghost into Toucon Boost Damashii. Its code is B and only has a Transformation Time setting. This Eyecon was created when Takeru was revived by his father's soul.

Main article: Eyecon Driver G

The Transformation Belt Eyecon Driver G (変身ベルト アイコンドライバーG, Henshin Beruto Aikon Doraibā Jī) is a large Eyecon that takes the form of a transformation belt. It is also referred to as the Giant Eyecon (デッカい眼魂, Dekkai Aikon) and its code is G15. Once it absorbs the 15 Hero Ghost Eyecons, the Eyecon Driver G can be used by Kamen Rider Ghost to transform into Grateful Damashii. Its incomplete form was created by Edith as a countermeasure against the Gammaizers, and it was completed when the 15 Hero Ghosts entered it for the first time.

Its code is D. Similar to the Toucon Boost Eyecon, it does not have different settings like standard Eyecons.

This Eyecon was created by Edith to counter the Gammaizers by utilizing their own powerto give it incredible strength. Edith originally intended for it to be used by Takeru, but was taken by Makoto instead. As shown in a failed attempt by Deep Specter, it is possible to use the power of this Eyecon to connect with the Gammaizers.

The Gammaizers later create a Deep Specter Eyecon of their own, which is used by Copy Makoto. This Eyecon served as a backup of the Gammaizers, allowing them to regenerate from it after they were destroyed in episode 48.

For the summer movie of Kamen Rider Ghost, Toei organized a contest for Japanese residents to design and submit their own Ghost Eyecon designs based on one out of a list of 71 historical figures. The 71 winning designs were presented in a special brochure for the summer movie on August 6, 2016, with the names of these winners being credited in the end credits of the movie. List of Gamma Eyecons

The Gamma Eyecons (眼魔ガンマ眼魂アイコン, Ganma Aikon) are the original Eyecons created by Edith with the aid of the Great Eye. They store the souls of the people of the people of the Gamma World, and are able to generate avatars for them using nanotechnology. By releasing the energy inside it, a Gamma Eyecon can transform into a Gamma Assault or Gamma Commando. If an Eyecon is destroyed, the person's soul will return to their body. However, their soul can be transferred into another Eyecon if available. A blank Gamma Eyecon can be used to absorb the souls of humans and control them as Gamma Commandos. One was used to absorb the soul of Onari Yamanouchi.

Kanon Fukami was able to speak as an Eyecon, during which the eye would glow pink. Gamma Eyecons of members of the Gamma World's royal family are gold and have the same shape as the transformation Gamma Eyecons.

One of the earliest Eyecons developed was for storing the souls of small animals. Edith used it to hold the soul of his cat, Yurusen.

These Gamma Eyecons are used executives of the Gamma World to transform into either a Gamma Superior or Gamma Ultima. They have a button one the side like the Ghost Eyecons, which when pressed causes the Eyecon to release internal energy and transform the user into the corresponding form. The Gamma Eyecon used by Edith to transform into the Gamma Ultima Ebony is gold rather than white like the standard Gamma Ultima Eyecon.

These Eyecons contain the power of defeated Empowered Gamma, and are created by Igor using the item the Gamma had bonded with. By using them in the Proto Mega Ulorder, Igor can perform a Gamma Change (眼魔チェンジ, Ganma Chenji) that gives his Gamma Superior Perfect form the appearance and abilities of the corresponding Gamma. When activated, these Eyecons announce the name of the associated Gamma. For example, the Eyecon used to transform into Gamma Superior Knife announces "Knife!" (ナイフ!, Naifu!)

These Gamma Eyecons contain the souls of deceased heroes like the Ghost Eyecons. They appear to be created in a similar way as well, as the Da Vinci Gamma Eyecon was created using the feelings Akari Tsukimura, who admired Leonardo Da Vinci.

Three Eyecons containing the souls of Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello Santi, and Michelangelo Buonarroti appear in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie Wars Genesis. They transform into the Da Vinci, Raffaello, and Michelangelo Gamma and using the bodies of Gamma Superiors or Gamma Commands.

A Gamma Eyecon containing the soul of Alexander the Great appears in Kamen Rider 1, in which Urga uses it to transform into Urga Alexander. The Eyecon reappears in Kamen Rider Ghost: Legendary! Riders' Souls! and is used by the Dark Will in the same manner.

Behind The Scenes

Portrayal

The Parka Ghosts (stored in the Eyecons) are voiced by Tomokazu Seki (関 智一, Seki Tomokazu), who also voices the Gamma Eyecons.

Notes

  • The Ghost Eyecons' appearance is based on a homophonous pun on both "Eye" (アイ, Ai) and "Soul" (, Kon, In the Kan'on reading) and the English word "Icon".
  • Many of the known Ghost Eyecons are named after famous/infamous male figures in history. This may explain the inclusion of the Ore Ghost Eyecon, as "Ore" is considered to be a very masculine, if very informal, pronoun.
    • As a pronoun, "ore" can also be used as "my", which could mean the Ore Ghost Eyecon is Kamen Rider Ghost's personal Eyecon.
  • The Ghost Eyecons containing the souls of people from history and their eyeball-like design may refer to the phrase, "the eyes are the windows into the soul".
  • All non-personal Ghost Eyecons have transformation jingles with a slight rhyming scheme.
  • Despite having numbers, Eyecons are not collected in the numerical way they are organized in (such as Newton (4) and Nobunaga (12) being created prior to being obtained).
    • In addition, there are Eyecons that don't match the color flashes of the DX Ghost Driver (such as it flashing yellow with the turquoise Tutankhamun Eyecon or red with the sky blue Ikkyu Eyecon).
  • There is an error with several releases of the Ryoma Ghost Eyecon packaged with the DX Sunglasseslasher, where they have "08", Goemon's numbering, on their Startup Time settings.[7]
EX Eyecons

The EX Eyecons & EX Parka Ghosts

  • Scans of toy catalogues had predetermined that two Eyecons under the EX Eyecon Set would appear in the film Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie Wars Genesis, with their primary users being Kamen Riders Ghost and Specter. These two Ghosts were also planned to be released as part of the Ghost Change EX Set. However, they were canceled and replaced by an early debut of the Toucon Boost Ghost Eyecon and Ghost's Toucon Boost Damashii in the movie for reasons unknown at the current time. Thusly, these two canceled Eyecons' Startup Time, Standby Time Transformation Time and Move Invocation Time settings are completely unknown.
    • A scene in the film where Mach and Specter attempt to use the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons to transform but to no avail could be a nod to this cancelled set of Eyecons. It could even be possible that the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons were the ones planned to be released in this set.
  • The toy Ikkyu, Pythagoras and Showa rider Eyecons, specifically those bundled with issues of TV-kun, is the first time in the Phase 2 Heisei era of using lenticular imaging in collectable transformation devices.
  • If one looks very closely, the text on the Special Ore Eyecon's Move Invocation Time setting reads "Midnight Special The Knights Kishidan from Route 127 of Fairies".
  • The shapes of the "Renaissance Trio" Eyecons are the same as the Gamma Eyecons, and the Raffaello and Michelangelo Eyecons can be used by Gamma Superior Raffaello and Gamma Superior Michelangelo respectively in the same manner as Igor does in the TV series. However, the trio are classified as Ghost Eyecons, because the settings weren’t finalized when Super Movie Wars Genesis was shooting.[8]
  • Because Mugen Ghost Eyecon has its own sounds, Mugen Ghost Eyecon sounds can be used in DX Mega Ulorder.[9]
  • The Eyecons are first toy series with pre-programmed sounds within the DX toy belts to release toys for many of the settings, with one having yet to be made into toys.
Eyecon spelled Icon

Eyecon seen spelled as "Icon"

  • Despite being spelled "Eyecon" in numerous sources of official material, it is seen spelled as "Icon" on a chalkboard in at least episode 47.
  • The fact that the Ex-Aid Eyecon has the Heisei Rider Eyecon sound in the DX Ghost Driver is likely due to its design being similar to said Eyecon, thereby triggering the same sound. This is also possibly because the Ex-Aid Eyecon is the newest Eyecon and likely never had its unique sound be programmed into the Driver toy.
  • When used in Ganbarizing, the Ishinomori Ghost Eyecon does not summon an Ishinomori Ghost, and instead will change and summon a random Ghost. As such, there is no design for an Ishinomori Ghost or Ishinomori Damashii.
DX robin error

"Robin".

  • There is an error on the DX release of the Robin Hood Ghost Eyecon where the top sticker only has "Robin" rather than "Robin Hood". This error is present in all releases of the DX Eyecon but strangely fixed on non-DX versions of the Eyecon.
  • Aside from Ghost and Specter's usual Eyecons, the Yujou Burst Eyecon is the only Eyecon of Alain's own original possession that shouts out Kaigan in its transformation phase instead of Tengan, despite being an evolved version of an Eyecon that uses the latter.
    • This was also the only Ghost Eyecon to not release during its respective film's release. It was later announced in June 2021 that it would release in conjunction with Kamen Rider Specter × Blades.
  • Kanon Specter Eyecon's transformation sound reuses the original transformation sound of Special Ore Ghost Eyecon.
  • Given its origin in the movie as an evolved Eyecon, the DX Yujou Burst Eyecon appropriately triggers the same Ghost Driver standby loop as the original Necrom Eyecon.
