“ I collect spores, molds, and fungus. „
~ Egon Spengler describing what he does most of the time to Janine, also one of his most famous quotes.

Egon Spengler is the overarching protagonist of the Ghostbusters franchise. He is the father of Callie Spengler and Grandfather of Trevor and Phoebe Spengler.

He was portrayed by the late Harold Ramis.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Created the proton packs as well as the storage faculty where they contain the ghosts
  • Throughout the franchise, he assisted Peter, Ray, and Winston in busting ghosts, some of which were genuinely threats such as the Scoleri Brothers
  • While he did alienate his friends and family prior to his death, it was only trying to protect them and stop Gozer.
    • Additionally, by the end of Afterlife, he successfully reconciled with them after helping them defeat Gozer.
  • In the first film, he helped Peter, Ray, and Winston temporarily defeat Gozer in its Stay puff marshmallow man form, preventing it from destroying New York and humanity
  • In the second film, he helped his fellow Ghostbusters defeat Vigo and prevent
  • Prior to his death, he orchestrated a complex plan to defeat Gozer before they could potentially return and destroy the world again by setting up traps in different locations and leaving equipment for potential newcomers who may find it, which ended up being proven true when his granddaughter Phoebe and her friends found it
  • In Afterlife (as a ghost) he helps Phoebe, Peter, Ray, and Winston defeat Gozer for good
  • Despite not appearing in all the movies like Ray, Peter, and Winston, he still passes as he had already left a posthumous impact by leaving the equipment and him leading Phoebe and her friends to them that resulted in the new generation of Ghostbusters.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is somewhat of a mad scientist who's willing to go to do mean and highly unethical experiments in the name of science to which he shows zero remorse, which is too corrupting for him to qualify as PG or NPG. For instances:
    • Him tricking a married couple into thinking they were getting counseling when in reality, he wanted to see if altering the temperature of the room would alter their moods
    • Him giving a girl a puppy only to later take it away.
  • He displays a brief berserker moment in the first film where he nearly assaults Walter Peck before being stopped by the police. However, considering how Peck was having them arrested and was blaming them for all the ghosts being unleashed when he was the one who caused it, this is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • He and Peter Venkman are the only Ghostbuster characters to be Inconsistently Admirable in the Original Series.
