NOTE: This page talks about Princess Peach in Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie. For her original counterpart, click here.
Heroine Overview

They're all counting on us. No pressure.
~ Princess Peach to Mario about her people
There's a whole universe out there, with a lot of galaxies.
~ Princess Peach questioning where her home world is, as well as her most famous quote.

Princess Peach is the deuteragonist of Illumination's 13th feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie. She is a human of unknown origin who stumbled into the Mushroom Kingdom and became its ruler, and the budding love interest of Mario and an ally of Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Toad.

She is voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy in English, who also played Marla Brenner from Playmobil: The Movie, Magik from The New Mutants, Brea from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Casey Cooke from Split, and Arisa Shida from Japanese, who also voiced Amanda O'Neill from Little Witch Academia.

Description[]

Physical Appearance[]

Princess Peach's physical appearance closely resembles her appearance in the video game version of herself, but her eyebrows are longer. She has blonde waist-length hair, blue eyes, a pair of round sky-blue earrings. Her torso is a pink dress that has a cyan jewel on her chest along with a pair of long white gloves. She wears leggings underneath that change color depending on what color dress she wears.

Personality[]

Unlike the video game version of Princess Peach, the movie version of Princess Peach does not act as much in a refined manner and is more visually confident when fighting her enemies. She is very protective of her kingdom; she will not hesitate to defend it from anyone or anything that threatens or endangers it, especially Bowser. She's also shown to be very alluring to others, mainly toward her friends.

However, like her counterpart, Princess Peach is compassionate, joyful, playful, patient, and still a bit graceful as shown with her interactions with Mario. She has a strong sense of curiosity upon meeting Mario, inspecting him to see if he was indeed human, and asking him questions about his world.

Unlike in the games, Peach didn't seem to have much faith in Mario, most likely due to being a foreigner from another world, until she sees his endless determination and desire to never give up against the odds. This is shown when they first met to the battle against Donkey Kong. Her respect and admiration for the plumber grows over the course of the film and eventually she develops a mutual budding romantic interest in him.

Powers and Abilities[]

Despite her appearance, Princess Peach is a formidable individual in her own right. Trained from infancy, she is a capable leader and fighter, able to clear an intense obstacle course with ease (according to herself, she cleared it on her first try). Even Bowser, who was incredibly powerful and lead an army of monsters, did not to try invade her kingdom before procuring a Power Star.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Mario: You don't seem like you're from here.
Princess Peach: I... don't know where I'm from.
Mario: Really?
Princess Peach: Yep. My earliest memory is arriving.
~ Princess Peach to Mario, when he asked her where she's from

Princess Peach was first born in an unknown location, before stumbling in a Mysterious Warp Pipe and being transported to the Mushroom Forest, where Mushroom people, known as Toads would find her. The Toads would then adopt the young girl, and raise her in the Mushroom Kingdom, like one of their own. When she grew up in her adulthood, she thought she was not good at the Training course at a Castle; worse than Mario, but she was able to complete it after so many tries. Long after completing the course, her general of his council, crowned her as the Mushroom Kingdom's princess. At some point, Princess Peach develops a serious hatred on a monster; the Koopa King, Bowser, because of his depravity and cruelty, but this still makes him love her all the more, and he will try and get her to marry him by force.

Role in the film[]

With Bowser having taken over the Penguin Kingdom and having imprisoned its inhabitants, Princess Peach learns from the Toads that Bowser will be attacking her kingdom next and vows to never let it happen and plans to recruit the Jungle Kingdom to help her fight against Bowser. As she leaves the throne room, she comes across Mario, who walked in without authorization and was tackled by Toads.

She implores them to stop and expresses surprise that another human besides herself has wandered into the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario explains what happened to his younger brother, Luigi who has landed in the Dark Lands, the home of Bowser and his army. She notices Mario's determination to find his brother and she takes him to an obstacle course where she shows him the ropes by expertly making it through without a scratch. Mario tries it out and failed repeatedly to complete it and came very close in the end. Although he didn't finish, Princess Peach still allows Mario to go with her, as she praised him for his improvement, and Toad comes along with them, stating that he fears nothing and refuses to leave her unprotected.

After an expedition, the trio set camp in the Fire Flower Fields where she uses a Fire Flower to light the fire, and a worried Mario tells being separated from Luigi longer than he was used to and worries about him very much, but Princess Peach assures him that they will save Luigi. She tells of her backstory of her earliest memory where she remembers wandering into the Mushroom Kingdom where the Toads found and raised her to be the princess she is today.

The next day, Princess Peach, Mario, and Toad journey to the Jungle Kingdom, where they are escorted by a large white ape. Upon arrival, Princess Peach inquires Cranky Kong's help in having his Great Kong Army help support her in the fight against Bowser, but Cranky Kong refused assistance while Princess Peach tells him that once the Mushroom Kingdom is down, his kingdom will be as well and Mario insists that his help is desperately needed. Despite Cranky Kong being dismissive of him, he agrees on the condition that he must first defeat his son, which shocks Princess Peach. She watches as Mario is pitted in a fight against Donkey Kong. At first, Mario was fighting a losing battle against him, but this doesn't deter him and he kept on fighting despite injuries, and as Donkey Kong sends him flying, Princess Peach informs Mario about the ? Block which he used to become Cat Mario to his initial chagrin before noticing the advantages it gave him, particularly the increased agility and claws, which by utilizing, he was able to defeat Donkey Kong.

It was then that Cranky Kong accepts her proposition and suggests that they create their karts to get back to the Mushroom Kingdom through Rainbow Road. However, Bowser was told what was happening and has his army ambush the heroes, during which one of the Koopas made Toad fall off the road, which upon noticing, Princess Peach deactivates the gravitational feature on her motorcycle wheels to save him from falling to his death. However, this doesn't stop disaster from striking when Mario and Donkey Kong fall off the road completely and into the sea below as the Kongs are captured, much to her and Toad's dismay. They returned to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Princess Peach rides through the town, ordering her subjects to evacuate to the forest to ensure that they don't suffer a horrific fate and returns to the castle where she retrieves an ax-spear and stands firm as Bowser arrives with his castle. Bowser proposed to Princess Peach in marriage though she refused, prompting him to have Kamek torture Toad causing her to unwillingly accept on the condition that he doesn't harm her subjects, which Bowser obliges and has Kamek release Toad as they are escorted to his castle. At the wedding reception, Bowser intends to incinerate the prisoners which includes Luigi, the Penguins, the Kongs, and Luma, in honor of his queen to be.

Meanwhile, Toad managed to successfully smuggle an Ice Flower in her bouquet. She reaches the alter where Kamek was about to unite them, only for Princess Peach, who saw what Bowser was doing to the prisoners, to punch him and proceeds to defy Bowser before using the Ice Flower to become Ice Peach. She proceeds to freeze Bowser in place when he tries to attack her and momentarily prevents the prisoners' cages from sinking into the lava before taking the fight to the wedding guests, who try to attack her. The ice effects on the chain wheel wears off once Princess Peach loses the Ice power up, which lowers them nearly to their deaths, but Mario and Donkey Kong are revealed to have survived the fall and the latter proceeds to raise the cages in the nick of time, which Luigi, having the bottom of his cage melted by the lava, escaped and ending up nearly falling to his death only to be saved by Mario in a Tanooki Suit, and the two are reunited at long last. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong was able to free Cranky Kong, who was proud of him, giving him the recognition that Donkey Kong longed for.

Princess Peach later happily reunites with Mario and briefly holds hands with him before Bowser managed to break out of the ice and sends a giant Bullet Bill to obliterate the Mushroom Kingdom to spite Mario and Princess Peach, though Mario managed to get its full attention on him and sends it to the Warp Pipe where he first emerged. The Bullet Bill's explosion caused a shock wave that brings Mario's allies into Brooklyn where both the Mario Bros. originated from. It was there that the final battle takes place as Bowser prevents Mario from taking the Super Star before he mercilessly beats him down. As Mario retreats into a pizza parlor before Bowser could kill him, Princess Peach manages to give him a mighty kick, with Donkey Kong and Toad also getting involved. Unfortunately, they're overpowered, and apprehended by the Koopa army. Luckily, Mario, after he sees his and Luigi's commercial reminding him that he needs to save Brooklyn, confronts Bowser head on just as he was about to kill Donkey Kong.

Bowser is angered to see that Mario still hasn't given up, which the latter laughs it off that he's been told that before. Princess Peach manages to break free from the Koopa guards restraining her and kicks a Koopa shell to knock the Power Star away from Bowser and advises Mario to use it, which Bowser tries to prevent through attempting to burn him, but Luigi blocks it with a sewer lid and they make it to the Power Star. Princess Peach is horrified at first, believing the brothers were burned alive, only to see they survived, and have become invincible. Mario and Luigi proceed to overpower the Koopa army, and Bowser, as Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong watch in amazement.

After the battle and the Super Star's effects wear off, Bowser can only plead with the princess for another chance, but Princess Peach, having enough of Bowser's cruel actions against innocent lives, makes him swallow a Mini-Mushroom, shrinking him with Toad trapping him in a bottle (later contained in Princess Peach's dungeon). She proceeds to praise the brothers for their determination and bravery. By the end of the film, Princess Peach, the Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Toad are cheered on by all of Brooklyn, and hailed as heroes.

Princess Peach makes her return to the Mushroom Kingdom, but she provides a pipe for Mario and Luigi, so they can travel between Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom.

Powers and Abilities[]

I'm taking you to see the princess. She can help you. She can do anything!
~ Toad to Mario
Princess Peach running through a obstacle course (The Super Mario Bros Movie)

Princess Peach displays her agility and acrobatics to complete the obstacle course.

Princess Peach's desire to protect her beloved kingdom from threats inspired her to train herself up into a formidable warrior as much as its monarch, be it in armed or hand-to-hand combat. Her gymnastic skills greatly improved her agility. She is also shown to be a very capable combat instructor, being the one who trained Mario his skills.

When using either an Ice Flower or a Fire Flower, she can assume elemental form said flowers provide thus allowing her to manipulate their respective element.

Relationships[]

Bowser[]

Of course she hates me. But that makes me love her all the more. Her heart-shaped bangs. The way she floats in the breeze. Her immovable tiara. And when she sees this Star, Oh [chuckles], WEDDING BELLS!
~ Bowser to his army about Princess Peach

Princess Peach and Bowser had a one-sided relationship, Bowser loves Princess Peach as he expresses his love for her in "Peaches" but she does not love him back. This is due to his evil, destructive personality.

Princess Peach had a goal to stop Bowser as she also has a cardboard cut-out that looks like Bowser in her obstacle course as a target.

Despite Princess Peach not loving him back, Bowser intervened the Mushroom Kingdom forcing a proposal to Princess Peach. Knowing Toad was tortured, Princess Peach reluctantly agreed to be his "wife" in his wedding. Aware that he was planning to publicly burn the prisoners in the lava, she confronted Bowser telling him that she will not marry a "monster" like him.

Before Princess Peach shrunk Bowser with a Mini Mushroom after getting beaten up by Mario and Luigi until he was too injured to keep fighting, Bowser foolishly begged Princess Peach to give him a chance which despite everything he’s done, as she tauntingly and justifiably refused as she forces him to eat it. Toad then followed up with putting Bowser inside the jar and put in a cage for all his countless crimes. Even when all is said and done, Bowser still vows to make the princess his wife.

Mario[]

First meeting each other in Princess Peach's Castle, Princess Peach was amazed to see another human. Knowing he is new to the Mushroom Kingdom, she acts as a mentor and ally of Mario being supportive of him in his struggles. She eventually develops a mutual budding romantic interest in him as the film goes on.

Struggling to complete her obstacle course. Despite Mario nearly reaching the end after many attempts, Princess Peach focused on his improvements and rewarded him. In the Jungle Kingdom, Mario struggled to fight Donkey Kong; Princess Peach helped him by giving him a Super Bell to transform into Cat Mario helping him defeat Donkey Kong.

During the ride back to the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach expresses interest in Mario's world and is quite surprised that in Mario's world, people don't drive on rainbows and that turtles are usually pets and not evil warlords. When Mario invites Princess Peach to come to Brooklyn so he can get her a pet turtle, she giggles and flirtatiously tells him that maybe she will come visit.

While Princess Peach was forced in a wedding with Bowser, Mario came to her aid crashing the wedding. There, she happily reunited with him and briefly held hands with him before Bowser interrupted with his fire breath.

Unlike in the games, Princess Peach underestimated Mario, until she saw his strive to never give up against the odds, which makes her admire him. She also tends to be playful and flirty around him, giving the nickname "Mustache."

Toad General[]

When the time was right, Toad General crowned Princess Peach as the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad General informed Princess Peach through an interactive 3D map to that Bowser and his army have taken over the Snow Kingdom. Toad General wished Princess Peach luck before she headed off to her journey.

Toad[]

I said "I wouldn't let anyone hurt you."
~ Toad

Princess Peach has known Toad since she was a princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She took him to their travels to the Jungle Kingdom. When Bowser forced a marriage on Princess Peach while torturing Toad, Princess Peach reluctantly agreed to Bowser's proposal for Kamek to stop torturing Toad. Before Bowser's wedding started, Toad helped Princess Peach smuggle an Ice Flower within her bouquet to surprise Bowser when she transformed into her ice form.

Luigi[]

Despite not interacting much, Princess Peach cares about Mario's brother, Luigi. She promised Mario throughout the film that they were going to save Luigi from Bowser. She also worked hard to save him and the other prisoners from being dipped into the lava. After Luigi and Mario defeated Bowser and saved Brooklyn, Peach told him that he's brave, to which Luigi tells her that bravery is his thing.

Cranky Kong[]

Before Cranky Kong agreed to Princess Peach's request, he wanted Mario to defeat his son, Donkey Kong. Seeing Mario was in trouble, she assisted him defeating Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong came to Princess Peach's aid and assisted sabotaging the wedding and rescuing the prisoners.

Donkey Kong[]

Donkey Kong is one of Princess Peach's friends, although, Mario fought and beat him and won the Kong army, to defeat Bowser. Donkey Kong tends to be very polite and respectful towards the princess throughout the movie.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike her gaming counterpart, this version of Peach does not have a damsel-in-distress role as this role is taken by Luigi.
    • She also serves as sort of mentor for Mario, being the one who teaches him necessary skills to combat Bowser, while still showing a budding romantic interest in him and helping him rescue Luigi.
    • The director claimed that depicting her this was would have been "too straightforward" and that they wanted the plot to focus more on her role as ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, a mentor to Mario (who is depicted as a rookie hero in the movie) and leader of its armies. Interestingly, this characterization also makes Bowser seem far more malevolent than he is in most games.
  • It is unknown what has happened to Peach's biological parents, though it is presumed that they have died.
  • Peach uses a power-up two times in the movie, and the power-ups that she uses are flower themed, and they are used when she is with the two characters who have feelings for her, Bowser and Mario. When she is with Bowser, she uses an Ice Flower to freeze him and to show him that she will never marry a monster like him (similar to Queen Elsa from Disney's Frozen who freezes things with powers from her hands). But when she is with Mario, she uses a Fire Flower while opening up to Mario about herself and her backstory, while subtly developing feelings for him. It’s like she’s giving Bowser the cold shoulder while being warm towards Mario.
    • On a side note, she also force-feeds them mushroom power-ups for different reasons. With Bowser, she force-feeds him a Blue Mushroom, which shrinks him, so she can punish him for all the crimes he has done. But with Mario, she force-feeds him a Super Mushroom so she can help him overcome his shortcomings to rescue his brother.
  • Like Mario, some fans criticized this incarnation of Peach, mainly due to her being an overpowered girl boss aka a “Mary Sue” and not having her as the Damsel-in-distress, as well as pointing out that she doesn’t have her original counterpart personality, and makes Mario feel weak, and mostly her doing all the fighting despite Mario fighting Bowser’s army in the climax, however, some fans say that Luigi and Peach’s role swap is fitting because it shows that Mario cares for his Brother, because it wouldn’t make sense for Mario in the movie to go save Peach if he just arrived in the mushroom kingdom and thus wouldn’t know who she is, nonetheless, Peach was loved by many fans because she’s now free from the Damsel-in-distress role.
