Heinkel Wulf 《ハインケル・ウーフー, Hainkeru Ūrufū》 is a supporting antagonist in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. She is voiced by Mitsuki Saiga in the Japanese sub and Karen Strassman in the English dub.
She is an assassin of Iscariot, working under Alexander Anderson directly, and partners up with Yumiko Takagi. A skilled agent wielding two handguns with silver ammunition, Heinkel is one of the key members of Iscariot and was an orphan under the teaching of Anderson. When Anderson is on another mission, Heinkel is left to lead the Armed Priest Vanguard.
Appearance
Heinkel has neck length, straw-colored hair, and grey-green eyes. She dresses in the priest uniform of the Iscariot Organization and wears glasses. Occasionally she is seen smoking a cigarette. Heinkel is usually seen with two pistols as her preferred weapon. After The Captain shoots her through the face, she wears medical bandages around her nose, cheeks, and chin and continues to wear them for the 30 following years.[5] The shot from The Captain damaged her vocal cords, as she is now speaking with a more masculine voice. Furthermore, she also becomes more impulsive.
Personality
Initially, Heinkel appears as a calm and fearless person.[6][7] Though on the surface she keeps a serious demeanor, she isn't susceptible to making humorous comments in the face of her enemies, such as mocking them before their deaths.[8] In Crossfire, how both Yumie and Heinkel deal with urgent situations in a bloody and disastrous manner constantly gets them into trouble with Maxwell.[9] Nevertheless, they remain on good terms.[10] Her calm demeanor was lost ever since Yumie's death at the hands of Walter and her vocal cords being damaged by The Captain. She appears to be more compulsive and angered, lusting for revenge.[11]
History
Heinkel makes a couple of small appearances in volume 4, as a non-speaking character who shoots a corrupt priest when Maxwell instructs her to. Later, she aims a pistol at Schrödinger when he appears suddenly at the Hellsing-Vatican meeting with the Queen of England.
She often acts as a bodyguard for Enrico Maxwell, along with Yumie Takagi. She is later seen among the brigade of Catholic priests sent to apprehend Integra under Father Anderson's leadership. She and Yumie chastise Anderson for saving Integra, but he explains that it is only the Vatican who are worthy of destroying Hellsing. After the fight, with the Millennium forces sent to apprehend Integra, she reports that half of their priests have fallen before ordering the Artificial Vampire corpses to be burned. She and Integra then engage in an argument in which Heinkel attempts to keep her in the custody of the Vatican, against Integra's wish to return to her mansion.
After an exchange of insults, Integra insists that Heinkel light the former's cigar. She protests, insisting that since she's holding the gun on Integra, she's in control of the situation, but eventually relents. She then bickers with Yumie as to whether to tie Integra up or just shoot her, but Anderson shuts the two of them down, stating that they might as well be rapists by forcing themselves as a group on a "single unarmed woman." Integra talks the remainder of the priests into accompanying her home, to the shock of Heinkel and Yumie. On the walk, a bewildered Heinkel notes that they have figuratively taken Integra into custody but screams at Yumie to shut up after the latter firmly states that Enrico Maxwell would never buy it.
Heinkel is seen later witnessing Bishop Maxwell's crusade with Anderson, Yumie, Integra, and the rest of the Iscariot priests. She reminds an enraged Anderson of Maxwell's orders to capture Integra and responds to Anderson's protests with the fact that it doesn't matter whether he likes it or not. Integra is then saved by Seras Victoria. Upon learning that Seras is a proper vampire now, she and Yumie take up arms but are told to stand down by Anderson, who says that neither of them would be enough to stand against her. She then witnesses the arrival of Alucard.
In his final battle with Alucard, Anderson orders Heinkel and Yumie to return to Rome. However, both of them stay behind and fight with the rest of the priests, most of whom are subsequently killed. She is present when Anderson uses the Nail of Helena and is visibly horrified at his transformation, asking, "Father...!! What have you turned into?!" Alucard explains that Anderson is no longer human, and the only way either of them can die is to bore the bowels of [their] hearts. She witnesses the end of the battle and is among those present at Anderson's death. Upon the arrival of a newly rejuvenated Walter, she is furious at his disrespect of Anderson's memory. When Walter kills an infuriated Yumie, Heinkel points a gun at the former in rage but is shot in the side of the face by The Captain. The bullet entered through her left cheek and exited through the right, severely damaging the right side of her face.
Heinkel is bewildered as The Captain gestures to her with his head, which she interprets as "don't interfere." He tosses her a first-aid kit, and Heinkel realizes that The Captain spared her life when he could have easily killed her. After seeing Yumie's remains, a bandaged and enraged Heinkel swears revenge on Walter C. Dornez and takes a sniper rifle from the small group of remaining Iscariot priests, despite the priests' protests. She remains out of the way of Alucard and Walter's fight. As a damaged Walter celebrates his presumed victory against Alucard, Heinkel shoots him through the eye. Walter allows her to continue shooting, and she empties the clip into him.
However, it has no effect, and as she advances, Walter uses his wires to cut off her arm and foot before staggering away. A furious Heinkel remains behind, demanding he come back so she can finally kill him, but Walter insists she will not be the one to kill him.
In the final chapter, Heinkel appears as a silhouette next to Makube and an unnamed younger Iscariot 30 years later. Heinkel's face still has severe scarring from the wound inflicted by The Captain. She appears to have all four limbs once more, possibly replaced by prosthetics. The younger Iscariot suggests trying to destroy Hellsing right then and there, but Heinkel calls him a "stupid kid" and "blind," however agrees it would be possible to take out at least half of the Round Table at the certain cost of their own lives. Makube refuses the idea, and it's revealed that, as of now, the Vatican, and presumably the Iscariot Agency, is too weak after the 9th Crusade, and that the next crusade will have to take place at least some centuries from now.
Relationships
Allies
- Yumiko Takagi: Heinkel has a close relationship with Yumiko. In flashback sequences, the ending sequence of OVA VIII and chapter covers depict Anderson with the young trio; Heinkel and Yumiko were always playing around while Maxwell took his studies seriously.[12][13] When grown, Heinkel and Yumiko remain close, often acting like a duo, with their differences in combat style complementing one another.[14] Heinkel was able to keep her composure when Anderson's remains were stepped on, but Yumie went berserk and hastily confronted Walter. It was not until Yumie's death that Heinkel went to make a move herself in a fit of rage; however, she was put to a stop by The Captain.[15] Heinkel was enraged by Walter's action, and revenge became the main focus of her shortly after.[16]
- Alexander Anderson: Heinkel was among those raised and taught by Anderson personally. With Anderson's teachings, Heinkel climbed up the ranks of the Vatican with Maxwell and Yumiko.[17][18] For Maxwell, Yumiko, and Heinkel, Anderson was a father figure. Although Anderson and Heinkel both have had their conflicts, Heinkel greatly respects Anderson.[19] When Anderson fell, Heinkel and Yumie both cried, until his remains were trashed and stepped upon by Walter C. Dornez, who Heinkel sought revenge for both Yumie (who died after a hasty confrontation) and Anderson.[20]
Enemies
- Walter C. Dornez: Heinkel thought nothing of Walter until his grand reappearance as an Artificial Vampire. When Walter stepped on Anderson's remains, it greatly angered Heinkel, but until Yumie was killed that Heinkel was spurred. Heinkel, in response, screams out her name and pulls out her gun, only to be shot by The Captain through her cheeks.[21] Though she was spared of death, Heinkel's lust for revenge wasn't over and she continued to wait patiently until the perfect chance came.[22] Though she was able to get multiple confirmed shots at Walter, she wasn't able to kill him before Walter dismembered her left arm and leg.[23]
- The Captain: When The Captain shot Heinkel's cheek, Heinkel was particularly angered that she was spared, as she felt that he took pity on her, and the thought of that enraged her. Thoughts of uselessness began to cloud Heinkel's mind, and she lost her composure.[24]
- Seras Victoria: The looks exchanged by Heinkel and Seras Victoria at the end of the manga and the OVA have led to speculation they may have developed a rivalry similar to Anderson and Alucard.[25]
Abilities
Abilities and Skills | |
---|---|
Marksmanship: In contrast with Yumiko's swordsmanship, Heinkel is a highly skilled gunwoman.[26] The OVA shows much more of Heinkel's marksmanship skills, where her action sequences stand out more than in the manga.[27][28][29][30] In Crossfire, Heinkel took out multiple terrorists armed with assault rifles with relative ease, later also skillfully taking out highly trained and armed Russian bodyguards hired by Ilyushin.[31][32] | |
Combat Experience: Trained under the teaching of Father Anderson, Heinkel has gone through so many assassination missions under the orders of Iscariot; therefore, gaining much experience in the process. When half of the Iscariot's Armed Priest Vanguard died in battle during their first encounter with Millennium Vampires, Heinkel was one of the few who had survived.[33] In the OVA, she was shown to dodge incoming attacks from the Last Battalion.[34] Heinkel also later survived the encounter with Alucard's familiars.[35] |
Weapons
Iscariot Sezioni 13 | |
---|---|
Heinkel uses a custom-made Pistol manufactured by Iscariot themselves. It is loaded with Silver ammunition to specifically deal with supernatural threats. The slides on Heinkel's guns in the OVA are engraved with words from the Latin chant "Dies iræ," which fittingly describes Judgment Day. In the manga, Heinkel's pistols are engraved with the word "Hancock & Barrysmith Arms," with the engraving at the bottom suggesting that it is loaded with 9mm rounds. However, the engravings are very inconsistent throughout the manga.

Dragunov SVD | |
---|---|
The Dragunov SVD is a weapon manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern. It is a semi-automatic sniper rifle chambered in the 7.62×54mmR cartridge. The SVD bears a number of cosmetic similarities to the AK family of rifles, but these similarities are for the purpose of standardizing the manual of arms. After Iscariot rescued Heinkel, in a fit of rage, Heinkel took one of the Armed Priest Vanguard's Dragunov away from him, looking for a chance of revenge on Walter for killing Yumie.

Other Weapons
- Hand cannon: In Crossfire, at one point, Heinkel uses a 25mm hand cannon against Abraham Van Rogh and his followers. First used to create a distraction and take the opportunity to shoot all the men stunned from the explosion radius, it was then used to blow off Van Rogh's right arm after he had retaliated.[36]
Concept and Creation
Heinkel was a character derived from the short-lived Crossfire manga series Hirano did years ago before Hellsing came to fruition. There, her androgynous appearance is very clear and understandable throughout the entirety of Crossfire. Later, Hirano joked about her being a Futanari after he was questioned about her gender,[37] after which he was then asked about it countless times that ever since, he had to draw Heinkel with a reminder that she's a Futanari ever since.[38] In addition, the guidebook data for her lists her gender as "Futanari."[39] For the OVA, the staff initially casted Tomokazu Sugita for the role, but he was quickly replaced by a female voice actor after Hirano told them that Heinkel is a Futanari.[40]
Name
Her first name, Heinkel, has been translated consistently since she was introduced. Her last name, however, was first translated as "Wulf" by Dark Horse Comics in the release of volume 5. The OVA rendered her name as "Wolfe," but the biggest deviation came from the guidebook, which translated her name as "Uhu."
Trivia
- She may be of German origin, given her name. Heinkel was a World War II aviation company that produced, among others, Heinkel He-111s used during the Battle of Great Britain. The fact she may be a German Catholic means she may have originated from Southern Germany or Sudeten Germans from Bohemia.
