First Lieutenant Zorin Blitz 《ゾーリン・ブリッツ中尉, Zōrin Burittsu Chūi》 is a major antagonist in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. She is voiced by Yoko Soumi in the Japanese sub and Rachel Robinson in the English dub after she replaced Hellena Taylor.
She is a Lieutenant of the Last Battalion, is a member of the Werwolf Squad, and is an Artificial Vampire. She, like her comrades, proved dedicated, unfaltering, and ravenously determined in the Great War against England. Zorin possesses unspeakable powers of psychological manipulation, able to throw up screens of illusions to torment and destroy all those who stand against her. In fact, she is so brutal and belligerent that she earned the epithet of "Brown Insanity 《褐色の狂気, Kasshoku no Kyōki》" by The Major.
Appearance[]
Zorin was a female vampire with ash gray skin and short, spiky, orange hair. She was very tall and muscular, giving her an imposing presence. She had narrow green eyes, with the right eye being much darker in color. She had a third eye in the palm of her right hand, which only opened when she used her illusory powers. In addition to having a muscular body and androgynous appearance, her breasts were more conical and bulky. Zorin wore a dark green halter top and the bottom half of a standard Last Battalion combat uniform (pants and boots). She also wore black gloves on both hands and was rarely seen without her silver and dark grey Scythe.
However, Zorin's most notable features were her tattoos. They consisted of a star on her forehead, a large pentagram on her right cheek, a spiral on her right shoulder, and innumerable letters covering the entire right side of her body (or at least her face, neck, and arm). When she used her illusion powers, the tattoos on her arm appeared to slide off and spread out from her hand, being quickly replaced by more tattoos on her skin.
Personality[]
Zorin was extremely sadistic and bloodthirsty.[4] She was shown to be incredibly cruel, as she gleefully showed her enemies illusions of painful past events, such as showing one of the Wild Geese mercenaries an illusion of his dead daughter,[5][6] and Seras Victoria had flashbacks of the day her parents were murdered.[7][8] She enjoyed using her illusion magic to mess with her victims' memories before she finished them off. Like many of the other monsters in Hellsing, she displayed little to no respect towards her opponents, insulted the Wild Geese, and called Seras weak. She was also quick to anger and impulsive, which led to her going against orders and attacking Hellsing manor.[9][10][11] Her brutal and twisted nature resulted in The Major referring to her as the "Brown Insanity."[12][13][14]
Relationship[]
- Seras Victoria: Under her belief and assumption that Hellsing without Alucard "is a babe in the woods,"[15] She initially viewed her as a filthy, sloppy soldier of Hellsing, constantly playing with her and her memories while torturing her.[16] However, this all changed after Seras' transformation, as she wondered why the hardened SS crew was scared of a girl head-to-toe covered with wounds and blood and realized that they were deep into trouble.[17][18] With Zorin's cruel actions and while killing Zorin, Seras expressed her burning hatred against Zorin; even if her life depended on it, she wouldn't even drink a sip of her (Zorin's) blood.[19] Zorin constantly underestimated Seras, which ultimately led her to her brutal demise under the hands of Seras.[20]
Powers and Abilities[]
Artificial Vampire | |
---|---|
Zorin Blitz was one of the top members of the Last Battalion and a member of the Werwolves.[21][22][23] She was a very powerful Artificial Vampire with very unique vampiric abilities and weapons. She was able to effortlessly toy with Seras in her pre-blood-infused state,[24][25][26][27] but she was eventually outmatched once Seras drank Pip Vernedead's blood.[28][29] Zorin was a formidable fighter who wielded her large Scythe, although she very rarely used it as a weapon.[30] | |
Superhuman Strength: Zorin had a degree of superhuman strength, as she could lift her massive Scythe with ease, and with enough force, she sliced a man in half.[31] | |
Superhuman Speed: Zorin's speed was enhanced to the point where she could run across a field to the Hellsing manor in mere seconds along with her platoon.[32] | |
Superhuman Durability: Zorin was able to survive the explosion of her Zeppelin caused via Harkonnen II and crashed.[33] | |
Regeneration: Zorin was able to heal wounds such as getting her cheek scraped by the Harkonnen and being shot multiple times in the chest by Vernedead. | |
Biological Immortality: As an Artificial Vampire, Zorin could not age or die to a disease. However, she could still be killed, meaning that her "immortality" was only biological. | |
Scythe Proficiency: Zorin's weapon of choice was a massive Scythe with enough power to slice a man in half.[34] She was equally dangerous at range, being able to throw it great distances with impressive accuracy.[35] | |
Sorcery | |
Zorin's main source of power was her specialty within the realm of Sorcery 《呪術, Jujutsu》. Her tattoo, which covered half of her body, was inscribed with a spell that could create illusions.[36][37][38] These illusions included creating an enormous copy of herself (taller than the Hellsing manor)[39] and showing her victim illusions of painful past events.[40][41] Zorin's illusions were extremely realistic, to the point of appearing physically tangible to their victims,[42][43][44] but sufficiently trained vampires could resist or outright negate the effects.[45][46] The illusions could have also been broken if Zorin was distracted or injured while casting them,[47] and their power was inversely proportional to Zorin's distance from her targets; prior to becoming a full vampire, Seras Victoria was able to see through and counter an illusion when Zorin was a mile or two away from her,[48] but an illusion cast when they were only feet apart proved too strong for her to break.[49] | |
Memory Reading: While a victim was trapped in an illusion, Zorin had the ability to slip into other people's memories.[50][51][52] The fatal weakness of this ability was when the target had more than one soul within them; as the sucking of blood (whether given or forcefully) caused the victim and the vampire's memories and soul to connect and intertwine, thus the memory of Seras was mixed together with Vernedead's memory, causing Zorin to be overwhelmed and confused.[53] |
Equipment[]
Scythe | |
---|---|
Zorin's weapon of choice was that of a huge Scythe 《大鎌, Ōgama》, which she mostly used in order to finish off her victims. The Scythe's blade had a horizontal design, which was black on the upper side and light on the lower side. It was notable that the jagged design on Zorin's Scythe was relatively common on hand-forged blades and revealed itself through the used metal metallurgy, folded smithing of two different steel hardenings, and the polishing. She first used the Scythe in order to execute a Wild Geese member, threw it on Vernedead's spine, and later used it to torture and seriously wound Seras. |
Concept and Creation[]
In order to make Zorin's design stand out, Hirano added in tattoos that covered half of her body. He also played with the idea of letting her fight barehanded without any weapons, but he added in a huge Scythe instead. However, because of her tattoos, which were frustrating and hard to draw, Hirano hates Zorin the most and calls her a weak character with no appeal. He jokingly said that's why she died a painful and horrible death.[54] Numerous interviews about which part was the hardest to draw Hirano always answers with Zorin's tattoo.[55] Zorin's tattoo doesn't have a consistent design in the manga or the OVA, as they are known to change between scenes constantly. Notably, Hirano added noted references to his background and other series by writing their titles on Zorin's tattoo.[56]
Name[]
Though her name has been translated consistently in all media, the biggest deviation came from the cover featuring Zorin,[57] writing her name as "Zooling Bliz," and the ending credits of OVA X, which spelled her first name as "Zolin."

Trivia[]
- While she has green eyes in the OVAs, in the first trailer for OVA IV, she had blue eyes.
- She had heterochromia iridum.
- Her last name, Blitz, is German for "lightning." It is likely a reference to Blitzkrieg, a military tactic used by Nazi Germany in the early days of World War II that involved overwhelming enemy lines with a single massive offensive combining infantry and tank regiments.
- "The Blitz" was also the common term for Germany's campaign of bombing raids on Britain during World War II.
