~ Scrappy taunting his former friends Mystery, Inc. during his transformation into Scrappy Rex. |
Scrappy-Doo is the main antagonist of the 2002 live action Scooby-Doo film. He is the nephew of Scooby-Doo and a former member of Mystery Incorporated who seeks vengeance on his former friends for abandoning him.
He was voiced by Scott Innes in his normal form and by J.P. Manoux in his Scrappy-Rex form.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He was made to be the villain as a response to the hated reception of the original Scrappy-Doo character from the animated shows and direct to video Scooby-Doo films. James Gunn, the writer, himself hated Scrappy, stating "Our whole goal was to destroy Scrappy forever."
- He is introduced as an annoying pest to the Mystery Inc. gang in a flashback. Velma states "every family has one nut." He is also described by Velma as a "little egomaniac".
- He rudely barges past his uncle Scooby, who exclaims "Hey!"
- He annoys the gang with his boastings of how he will beat up ghosts, as Fred insists there are no such things. In fairness, it turns out that supernatural creatures do in fact exist in this universe, as evidenced by the creatures of Spooky Island, but that still does not validate Scrappy's boasts, especially considering how small and weak he is.
- He pees on Daphne, with it being indicated he had done this at least once before as well. Scrappy claims it was an accident, but Fred points out that Scrappy was marking his territory, meaning that he was lying and he did it on purpose to establish his "dominance".
- He rudely tries to usurp leadership of Mystery Inc. from Fred, outright telling him "You don't have the scrote' for this job pally!" He demands that the gang make him the new leader or he will leave. Everyone, including his uncle Scooby, agrees to throw him out of the Mystery Machine.
- He arrogantly claims that people adore him, and that he'll get his own TV show.
- His evil plan is to conduct a ritual with the creatures of Spooky Island and the cult that worships them, absorbing many souls including a pure soul to empower himself and keeping them trapped in his body to drain them for energy while letting the creatures possess the bodies of the souls he absorbed so they can have human bodies to survive in sunlight while retaining all of their supernatural strength. Than the new Scrappy and his army of monsters can conquer the world. He plans to use Mystery Inc. as part of the batch of souls to empower him as petty revenge for kicking him out of the gang for his rude and obnoxious attitude, using his own uncle Scooby as the pure soul (albeit, this is somewhat more understandable considering they abandoned him on the side of the road and Scooby didn't seem to really care for him in this version).
- While his anger at Mystery Inc. and Scooby is justified considering they unjustly abandoned him on the side of the road, this does not explain his goal to conquer the world or make his method of trying to do so (absorbing many souls who had nothing to do with his vendetta against Mystery Inc.) any more understandable. Shaggy even calls him out on this saying it's no reason to "freak out like a jerk and try to kill all humanity."
- He foolishly tries to take Scooby on after losing all of his power, showing how arrogant he is. This leads to him going down in one blow.
- He throws a fit when he's defeated.
- He brings about his own downfall by inviting the rest of Mystery Inc. (which was broken up at that point) to use them in his transformation ritual. Had he only invited Scooby (and Shaggy, who was with Scooby) to Spooky Island, he likely would have won.
- Velma and her crush make fun of his "Puppy power" catchphrase, which is more humor at his expense.
- Overall, he's arrogant, childish, megalomaniacal, rude, and brings about his own downfall.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, despite being the only version of Scrappy-Doo who is meant to be hated, he ended up being Unintentionally Sympathetic to some viewers, including at the time the movie was released, with Mystery Inc. becoming Unintentionally Unsympathetic, especially Scooby-Doo.
- Furthermore, James Gunn apologized when it turns out that Scrappy had some fans who weren't pleased with the portrayal of him in the movie. The fact that the Mystery Gang is portrayed negatively in the movie and the fact that they left him to die in the desert (what makes his motives to want revenge on them truly justifiable), though he did challenge them to do that, didn't really help matters.
