Dorothy arranges for Sophia's sister, Angela, to fly from Sicily to Miami as a surprise gift for Sophia's birthday, not realizing that Sophia and Angela have been feuding for decades, over what turns out to be a big misunderstanding.
This is the first episode of The Golden Girls to air in 1987.

The woman in a black floral dress at the birthday party is the same woman who Sophia's boyfriend, Tony, cheats on her with in "Long Day's Journey Into Marinara".[2]

When Blanche tells the others about her cheerleading contest against her sister, she talks about twirling batons as well as cheerleader moves. Cheerleaders to not twirl batons, but majorettes do.
