Topaz Carbuncle is an Arcanist and Summoner pet in Final Fantasy XIV. It is called by the Summon II ability. Carbuncles are arcane constructs created by the Arcanists' Guild to assist them in their investigations.
Obtained[]
Topaz Carbuncle is obtained automatically upon learning Summon II from the quest Topaz Teachings, and is the default pet called by the ability. Summoners can upgrade Topaz Carbuncle to Titan-Egi during the level 35 quest Austerities of Earth. Upon completing the quest battle, Titan-Egi permanently replaces the Topaz Carbuncle for Summoners only. Unlike most other abilities, this change will apply even if the Summoner is level synced below level 35, allowing them to retain the increased action potencies the Egi has over the Carbuncle. The only way for a player to truly summon Topaz Carbuncle again after unlocking Titan-Egi is to unequip their Soul of the Summoner and revert to Arcanist. The Summoner may also choose to glamour their Egis with the appearance of a Topaz Carbuncle, but this is aesthetic only and it will continue using the Egi's abilities.
Use[]
Topaz Carbuncle specializes in utility. It's Egi Assault is the only support-oriented Assault. This utility comes at the cost of having the lowest overall damage output of all summons. Its auto-attack, Gouge, deals mediocre melee damage to only a single target, and it doesn't learn a damaging Egi Assault until after it should have been replaced by Titan-Egi.
Topaz Carbuncle's Egi Assault, Glittering Topaz, grants the player Stone Wall, a shield that absorbs damage equal to 30% of the player's HP. With Egi-Assault's short 30s recast and 2 charges, Glittering Topaz is an extremely powerful defensive ability. When soloing content, or learning and progressing new encounters, Glittering makes Topaz Carbuncle the safest summon to use, providing Arcanists and Summoners with impressive durability. This durability also complements their ability to support the party with Resurrection.
Its Egi Assault II, Shining Topaz, is a powerful attack that damages all enemies around the Carbuncle. Shining Topaz has significantly higher potency than Emerald Carbuncle's Glittering Emerald, and has no damage dropoff unlike Ifrit-Egi's Flaming Crush, allowing it deal more damage in AoE situations despite its lower potency. However, by the time Egi Assault II is learned at level 40 Arcanists should have already upgraded to Summoners, and Summoners in turn replaced their Carbuncle with Titan-Egi, so Shining Topaz should see very little use beyond self-induced Arcanist challenges.
Summoning abilities are all off the global cooldown (oGCD) with a shared 3s recast, granting Arcanists and Summoners significant freedom in switching their active summons in combat. This can allow them to quickly switch to Topaz Carbuncle to apply Stone Wall in an emergency.
Actions[]
Without the players's input, Topaz Carbuncle will only auto-attack with Gouge. In order for Topaz Carbuncle to use its other actions, the player must command it to do so with Egi Assault or Egi Assault II.

Etymology[]
Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine. It is the birthstone for November. Carbuncle was a mythical creature reportedly sighted in the Americas by Spanish conquistadors. It is described as a small creature, either a bird or a mammal, that has a gem in its forehead crystallized from the brain of a dead dragon. According to myth, it is good luck to catch a carbuncle. A carbuncle is also an archaic name given to any red cabochon cut gemstone. The name applied particularly to red garnet.
