Poison materia is a Magic Materia Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that provides the user Poison Poison-inflicting spells. The spells each deal non-elemental damage and have a chance of inflicting the poison status. Poison materia can also be linked with Warding Materia Warding Materia to resist against the poison status.

In addition to poison materia, the Poison and Petrify Materia Poison and Petrify Materia contains the properties of both poison materia and Petrify Materia Petrify Materia, although it is rarer and levels up slower than the poison materia does.

Obtained[]

The player already has a poison materia since the start of the game. From chapter 4, "Dawn of a New Era", onwards, it can be purchased for 1,500 gil. Another can be acquired in the Chadley Combat Simulator challenge "Gongaga Region Intel: Level 1".

Use[]

Poison materia grants three tiers of poison spells, each of which deal non-elemental damage and inflict the poison status. The basic Bio spell is unlocked from the start, while Biora is unlocked at 300 AP, and Bioga at 900 AP. Poison spells are guaranteed to hit their target, bypassing obstacles and sticking to them before dealing damage, and will deal damage even to targets immune to the poison status effect.

Poison materia spells are reliable in initial damage output but weaker than their peers. The spells are not resisted by any elemental resistance, but also cannot exploit any weaknesses, further hindering them. Compared to other non-elemental damaging spells, such as those provided from the petrify materia and the Comet Materia Comet Materia, poison materia's spells deal much less initial damage, but are much cheaper to cast. The damage output from the poison status itself, however, can wear enemies down over time, can interrupt any Regen Regen they have, and is not based on the Magic Magic attribute of the caster.

One of the best uses of the poison materia is pairing it with a warding materia. This can shorten the poison effects when hit on the wearer, or nullify it with a level 3 warding materia. Because poison can deal considerable damage over time in battles, and the ability to take out a party member's regen can greatly impact their sustainability, this can be a very good use of the materia. Though other accessories can also resist poison, as can the Resist Resist spell, this is still a good way to save an accessory slot or save on the need to keep a spell up.

The poison materia has a few other possible Support Materia Support Materia pairings. Magnify Materia Magnify Materia and Magic Focus Materia Magic Focus Materia can be used to increase spellcasting damage output, and Level Boost Materia Level Boost Materia can be used if players want access to a stronger spell. Magic Efficiency Materia Magic Efficiency Materia and Swiftcast Materia Swiftcast Materia reduce the spells costs, though the spells from poison materia already have relatively low cost and cast time. The Auto-Cast Materia Auto-Cast Materia and Synergy Materia Synergy Materia allow Bio to be cast often, though this is an inefficient use of them as there are stronger damaging spells.

The poison and petrify materia outclasses poison, as it is a more slot-efficient materia granting both sets of spells and potentially both sets of status resistances when paired with warding materia. Only one poison and petrify materia exists, meaning players will need to choose whether they wish to use it for spellcasting damage output or for warding materia resistance. Although the spells from petrify materia are considerably stronger in initial damage output than those from poison materia, it is hard to pass up the ability to resist both statuses at once, considering the potential for either status to severely harm a party in battle.
