Blizzara is a magic spell in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It is granted by either Ice Materia or Fire and Ice Materia, and is the mid-tier Ice-elemental spell above Blizzard and below Blizzaga. Blizzara deals moderate ice-elemental damage, with a medium MP cost and casting time. The spell fires a small ice projectile at the targeted enemy which then expands and explodes to deal damage.
Blizzara is also used against the player by Flan, Hecteyes, Scrutineye, Twin Brain, and Two Face.
Use[]
Blizzara costs 10 MP to cast with a level 2 ice or fire and ice materia equipped. The spell is effective at damage output but at its strongest against enemies that are weak to ice (particularly humanoids).
Among its peers—Fira, Thundara, and Aerora—Blizzara is different is different in that after hitting its target, it creates a stationary icicle before dealing damage to enemies caught in the radius. This can give it a degree of area-of-effect damage, albeit delayed. However, it means that some enemies, which are not knocked back by the initial projectile, can evade the spell, meaning that some foes should be hit in between their movements or when they are stationary.
Blizzara outclasses Blizzard in terms of damage output, but its MP cost means players may consider casting Blizzard instead at times. Though Blizzaga's damage output is far greater, its longer cast time, MP cost, and the fact it costs two ATB charges means that Blizzara will often be a better choice.
Blizzara can be amplified by pairing its materia with Support Materia. HP Absorption Materia and MP Absorption Materia can increase a party member's sustainability, allowing the spell to heal the user or to be cast more frequently, respectively. Magic Focus Materia can increase the spell's damage against individual targets, and Magnify Materia can make for a powerful combination when it hits all enemies at once. Magic Efficiency Materia can reduce the spell's cost and Swiftcast Materia reduce its cast time, though these boosts help Blizzaga more than they help Blizzara.
Using Blizzara with Aerith's Arcane Ward will cast it twice. Further using Yuffie with Doppelganger when in Arcane Ward can cast Fira four times, potentially overwhelming enemies.
If the party member casting Blizzara has unlocked their ice-elemental weapon ability (e.g. Cold Front for Aerith), Blizzara becomes Blizzara α, which will bestow an ice-elemental sphere to the spellcaster for the rest of the battle (unless the player changes the element with Fire α etc.) that will supplement small magical ice-elemental damage when defending against certain enemy attacks (perfect-blocking not needed) and when using ATB abilities. The attacks from the "ice sphere" do build stagger and can be critical hits.
