Green Shell |
A Red Shell is a red-colored Koopa Troopa Shell. They are worn by less common Koopas, which won't walk off cliffs and are as well weapons in the Mario Kart series. When stomping a Red Koopa, it will or hide in its shell or will be kicked out its shell. In both ways, the Red Shell could be used anyway. Normally, in sidescrollers it just acts like a Green Shell, but in spinoffs, it has a homing effect. It sometimes is eventually harsher than a Green Shell.
Appearances[]
Mario Kart series[]
Red Shells appear as staple items in the Mario Kart series, appearing in almost every installment - canon or fanon - and usually functions in the same way. Once thrown, Red Shells tend to lock on to the racer ahead of the thrower, and will target them. They are unable to bounce off of walls in most installments.
Mario & Luigi: Sage Quest[]
The Red Shell reappears in the Mario & Luigi series as a returning Bros. Attack, once again under the name 3D Red Shell, and being one of Mario's Bros. Attack, which uses up 2 Bros. Points. It is obtained by a Blue Toad with a sack in Toad Town, who gives Mario and Luigi all 10 Attack Pieces before they leave the area. It acts similar to how it did in previous installments, though the amount of hits is the same as in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
Super Smash Bros. series[]
The Red Shell is a usable item in the Super Smash Bros. series. Instead of sliding in the direction it was thrown in after touching the ground like a Green Shell, the Red Shell slides from left to right and targets the nearest player, even the player who activates it. Also, it will not fall off the stage and will instead turn around once it reaches an edge.
Koopa Kart series[]
The Red Shell appears in every game in the Koopa Kart series, serving the same role as in Mario Kart. In most games, it can be obtained in the top eight positions, while in Koopa Kart Wii and Koopa Kart 8, it is obtainable in the top twelve positions. Starting from Koopa Kart DS, the Red Shell is able to hit players on the side, and as of Koopa Kart Wii, if its target has already been hit, it will slow down until the player is vulnerable so it can hit properly.
