Unagis, previously known as simply Eels, are giant eel-like creatures seen in multiple Mario games.
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, only one appears, in Jolly Roger Bay; however, it's involved in two Stars. First, in "Plunder the Sunken Treasure", it's blocking the entrance to the ship Mario needs to enter in order to get this star. The second Star, "Can the Eel Come Out to Play?", involves Mario having to lure the Unagi out of its nest and grab the Star on its tail.
Unagi later appear in New Super Mario Bros. DS, in Worlds 4-3 and 8-3. In the latter, Mario has to swim away from a gigantic one that can't even be killed by a Star.
A Unagi is also seen in Mario Party 4 in the minigame Manta Rings where it takes away three points upon contact.
A Unagi is even part of a Mario Kart track: Wii-U Dolphin Shoals. They also make cameo appearances in Wii Koopa Cape and the Mario Kart 7 version of GCN Daisy Cruiser.
Oddly, "Unagi" (うなぎ) is not the creature's actual Japanese name. Furthermore, "unagi" is the Japanese word for "freshwater eel", and while the type of water used in the Mario series is debatable, Unagis are based on SALTwater eels (穴子 anago).
Fanon appearances[]
- New Super Mario World features a female boss, Maw-Ray of the Deep.
- Mario Kart Dimensions features Unagis as an obstacle on one track.
- Super Mario Kart 8+ features Unagis. They're listed as a "background character", but since the game is a remake of Mario Kart 8, we would assume they play the same role in Dolphin Shoals that they did in the original.
- No Maw-Rays appear in St. Clair Publications' Super Mario Sunshine Deluxe, but the game re-does Eely Mouth to look like a Unagi.
New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros.[]
Unagis appear in New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros., in this game, they behave as they did in New Super Mario Bros. either swimming along the path or biting at the heroes from their holes. They are very durable enemies as they are immune to both fireballs and iceballs. Unagis can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman or an Invincibility Leaf. Unagis can commonly be found in water levels appearing as uncommon enemies in Palm Shore, Rock Mountain, and the Haunted Forest and later appearing as very common enemies in Treasure Island.
The Legend of Zelda (Studio Ghibli Film)[]
Unagis appear in Studio Ghibli's The Legend of Zelda movie under the nickname of the "Shrieking Eels". They produce loud shrieking noises when they are hungry, and they feed on Hylian flesh. Princess Zelda discovers one swimming towards her when she enters a lake to bathe after having a nightmare about her father's death at Ganondorf's hands. The Unagi circles around her, enjoying the thought of a fresh meal, and moves in for the kill—but is intercepted by Link via karate chop in the head; when the Unagi turns around to retaliate, Link's sheer force of will intimidates it enough to drive it away from Zelda, never to be seen again.
