The Super Leaf is a usually autumn-brown leaf power-up in the Mario franchise. It debuted as the headlining item in Super Mario Bros. 3. A folkloric reference to the leaves tanuki use to help themselves transform, the Super Leaf usually turns the user into the Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario form.
At minimum, the Super Leaf grants a tail that can be whipped as a close-range attack. A player character that uses it can glide slowly to the ground in midair. Depending on the game, the user can also get a running start to temporarily take flight.
History[]
In its original appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Super Leaf turns the player character into the Raccoon Mario form. It appears alongside the Tanooki Suit, which grants the Tanooki Mario form with a more complete suit and abilities. The P-Wing turns its user into a version of Raccoon Mario with unlimited flight for one course.
As the Super Leaf was succeeded by other flight power-ups like the Cape Feather and Wing Cap, for many years, it mainly appeared as the Leaf Cup emblem in the Mario Kart series.
Super Mario 3D Land reintroduced and redesigned the Super Leaf, using it as the main power-up and also applying it to many enemies to give them raccoon tails. In this game and its sequel, Super Mario 3D World, it turns the player character into a version of Tanooki Mario that cannot take flight, rather than Raccoon Mario, for visual clarity. The new Statue Leaf is also required to turn into a statue like Tanooki Mario originally could. Luigi gains a unique costume called Kitsune Luigi, in reference to his and Mario's facial structures.
The Super Leaf continues to yield a flight-capable Raccoon Mario in the 2D games, as of New Super Mario Bros. 2. Luigi's form carries over the newer vulpine theming and is named Fox Luigi.
An assistive counterpart, the Invincibility Leaf, lets the user turn into White Tanooki Mario or White Raccoon Mario, depending on the game.
Fanon appearances[]
Super Mario Moose[]
The Tanooki Leaf appears in Super Mario Moose as a power-up. It works similarly to its appearances in past 3D Mario games, where it slows the player's fall and it can let them swipe enemies with it's tail.
Super Mario Moose Deluxe[]
The Tanooki Leaf appears again in Super Mario Moose Deluxe, acting the same as in the previous game.
Koopa Kart series[]
The Super Leaf is an item featured in the Koopa Kart series in Koopa Kart 7, Koopa Kart 8, and Koopa Kart Tour. It can be obtained in the top five positions in 7 and Tour and the top seven positions in 8. It functions similarly to how it does in the Mario Kart series, though in Koopa Kart 8, its attack range is extended due to the larger tail, and it doesn't take up an item slot while in use, as it acts automatically.
