A type is an elemental property that strengthens or weakens the damage of moves in battle, depending on its interactions with the target's types. It is a prominent game mechanic in the Pokémon franchise, and in many series that take inspiration from it, such as Kotomo.
In the Pokémon franchise, each Pokémon has one or two types. These are usually dictated by its species and current form, but can sometimes be changed in battle. Each move has one type, and its damage is boosted by 1.5× if the Pokémon using it shares its type.
Types have offensive and defensive strengths and weaknesses. They are often based on real-world logic; for example, Fire is strong against Grass both offensively and defensively, but weak against Water.
These properties act as damage modifiers based on the type(s) of the move and its target. The matchups between each pair of types are often systematized into a type chart.
Depending on the move's and target's types, a move may do normal (1×) damage, or be super effective (2×), not very effective (½×), or not effective (0×) at all.
If the target is dual-type, the effectiveness is calculated for each type and both are multiplied together, allowing for 4× and ¼× damage modifiers.

The Pokémon franchise has 18 currently used types, with 1 retired type.
The Pokémon Trading Card Game uses a simplified system of 10 currently used types, with 1 retired type. As a result, Pokémon often have different types than in other media.
Type matchups also work differently. Moves do not have their own type, so matchups use the Pokémon's type(s) instead. Weakness and Resistance are specifically stated per Pokémon, with damage modifiers varying between cards.
