The Calamus flute is a recurring item in the Dragon Quest series.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest XI[]
When blown upon, the Calamus flute summons the great whale Cetacea from anywhere in Erdrea. If the player is not at a designated Whale Way Station or island upon summoning, then the party will be launched from Luminary's Landing near Arboria.
The Calamus flute was first discovered in the Age of Heroes by Erdwin and his party. It has been said that he summoned Cetacea in his battle against the Dark One, ultimately defeating him. When Erdwin landed near Arboria, his companion Serenica left the flute to her descendants. Centuries later, it was bestowed to the young mage Veronica as a reminder of her heritage.
Veronica met an untimely demise while casting the spell that evacuated the present Luminary, her sister Serena, and their allies from a collapsing Yggdrasil when Mordegon attacked. But her flute made its way to the bedchamber of Father Benedictus, high priest of Arboria, in his sleep. He presents it to the party the next day and has Serena play it. At first, nothing happens; so she lets the Luminary try it. In his hands, the flute transforms into a fishing rod, its line of pure light. He casts the line into the sky; and soon, there is a sharp pull. Cetacea rises, much to the astonishment of all in witness.
