The Red Queen's Castle, also called Salazen Grum, is a castle and the former home of the evil Red Queen from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
Design[]
The Red Queen's Castle is built from stone with prominent red heart accents, the same color scheme as the Queen of Hearts card. It has many heart-shaped hedges and it also has gardens with many red roses and hedges cut into the shape of the Red Queen herself. There are many heart-shape designs outside and inside the castle. After the Red Queen's reign ended, she was banished to the Outlands, and the castle fell to ruin.
Places[]
Throne Room[]
The Throne Room is where all of the Red Queen's subjects come to greet her. The throne room is a long corridor with large red pillars reaching up to the ceiling. The throne is a small, red heart shaped chair pushed back into a small indent with curtains on either side and a large stained glass window designed with hearts. There are stained windows on the sides of the room giving an illusion of a more spacious feel. The back wall of the entrance has a mural of the Red Queen on the Jabberwocky fighting off a gryphon. The middle section of the floor is checkerboard pattern covered by a red carpet leading up to the heart shaped stairs where the throne is placed. There are two doors on either side of the back wall.
Courtyard[]
The courtyard is filled with red rose bushes and a crocket game already set up. This is the only place in the castle that shows liveliness and greenery.
Hatter's Room[]
This room is like any other room except it is filled with fashion materials and hat manikins.
Red Queen's Chamber[]
This room is dimly lit with a huge balcony and presumably where the Red Queen sleeps.
Appearances[]
Alice in Wonderland[]
The castle is largely seen in the film, especially during the midway point where all of Alice's scenes as are centered in and around the castle.
Alice Through the Looking Glass[]
The castle is seen for a brief moment in the sequel. Standing in ruin, the castle has been overgrown by vines and has fallen into disrepair. The Red Queen's topiary head has also fallen.
Trivia[]
- Salazen Grum's name may be based on the following words:
- The German word "salzen" (meaning to salt or to preserve something with salt, perhaps by way of the slang term "salty" to refer to an angry and bitter attitude), the Spanish term "salazón" (meaning salting or salted), the Portuguese and Spanish word "salaz" (meaning salacious, perhaps by way of connecting lust to hearts), the word "sala" (in English, referring to a large hall or meeting room; in Spanish, a courtroom, a way of referring to the castle itself), and/or the Spanish word "alazán" (from an Arabic root meaning reddish or reddish-brown, referring to the Red Queen)
- The English term "grum" (meaning morose, stern, and surly, stemming from roots meaning angry, wrathful, and cruel).
- While her sister's castle is heavily designed after chess, this castle is more loosely based on playing cards.
- The table in the Red Queen's chamber, greatly resembles the table with The Enchanted Rose in Beauty and the Beast.
- The Red Queen's castle enslaves animals as furniture, such as:
- Flamingos and hedgehogs as croquet mallets or clock holders and balls, respectively
- Monkeys to hold candlesticks, chandeliers, seats, and tabletops
- Long-beaked birds to hold up portraits and hold chandeliers aloft
- Pigs as footrests and to hold seats
- There are a few problems with the animated geography of the castle location. Where as, in one scene there is a moat of heads surrounding the castle with a draw bridge, and in another it's just a rock and dirt path.
- Around the interior door of the castle's throne room is a giant mural depicting the Jabberwocky facing the Gryphon, a character from the original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In other rooms (such as the Hatter's workroom), there are framed portraits of the Mock Turtle (a companion of the Gryphon, also from the original book), which are also seen in the video game adaptation.
