The Matrix is a character from the Disney animated series, Gargoyles.

Background[]

Despite being self-aware, the Matrix is not completely sentient. It is shown to take many forms from an onrushing silvery mass to a large humanoid figure resembling that of an alien (specifically a Roswell Gray). In addition to transforming into a humanoid, the Matrix can create and dissolve extra nanobots or form into various objects. The Matrix not only remains in single form but is also capable of separating into individual groups of nanobots capable as the original.

Role in the series[]

In "Walkabout", the Manhattan Clan (consisting of Goliath, Elisa Maza, Bronx, and Angela) encounters the Matrix who emerged from its silvery mass form attempting to engulf the group which they managed to escape from the Matrix's mass form. Later at a laboratory where the Matrix was created, Anastasia Renard warns Fox about the Matrix causing a disaster if it goes out of control which Fox tells her that the magnetic field will contain it. Later during a battle between Goliath and Dingo in his armor, the Manhattan Clan notices the Matrix attacking them through various forms, including a large wall which the Matrix keeps on respawning during battle, trying to find the source of the Matrix. Goliath attempts to smash a dome formed by the Matrix which Dingo shoots to free Angela who was trapped inside. Dingo and the rest of the Manhattan Clan run away from the incoming mass of the Matrix. Back at the lab, Anastasia Renard suggests to Fox to test the Matrix again by erasing it and starting the program over again just as Fox plans to restart the Matrix.

As the Manhattan Clan and Dingo observe the strange liquid on the outback, Dingo examines it and finds out it is nanotechnology seeing the Matrix's nanobots which are computer-programmed to keep building more and more of themselves to form the Matrix just as the group evades the Matrix's nanobots for safety. Just as Anastasia Renard and Fox leave, the Matrix's mass liquid escapes the lab. Soon as the two notice the Matrix escaping, Anastasia warns Fox that it has learned how to shut down a magnetic containment field, just as its mass liquid absorbs the lab, which the two manage to escape, noticing many spiked formations emerging from the ground, just as it continues emerging where the two approach the Manhattan Clan and Dingo talking with the Shaman. Anastasia Renard then warns Goliath that the Matrix has reached its limit of its range, leading Dingo and the Manhattan Clan to stop the Matrix causing a disaster.

Finding a way to stop the Matrix, Anastasia finds an optical drive cartridge which was retrieved during the disaster which would wipe out the program to leave the Matrix dormant by putting it directly into the Matrix which the Manhattan Clan decides to stop the Matrix's results. Soon as Dingo and the Manhattan Clan arrive at the remote lab where the Matrix starts attacking, Dingo alerts them to escape from the Matrix. As they approach the Shaman about finding a plan to stop it, he suggests to the group to convince of the Matrix's error and fix it. Just before Dingo plans to stop it, Anastasia Renard warns him that the Matrix is more than a machine as it is an artificial intelligence which the Shaman suggests to seek the Matrix in the Dreamtime.

In the Dreamtime, Goliath and Dingo find themselves in another world where they attempt to find the source of Matrix to which at the real world, the Matrix continues absorbing the entire landscape in the real world. Just as Goliath and Dingo approach the Matrix, they finally find the source of the cause in the real world as the two plan to stop the AI from destroying the world which the two confront the Matrix in combat together after Goliath tells Dingo of what the Shaman said. Back at the Dreamtime, the Matrix grabs Goliath and Dingo, which Goliath tells it to stop evolving into a disastrous outbreak, which it replies to him that it is programmed to create order, much to Goliath warning the Matrix that it is negating. The Matrix then evolves into a humanlike form just as Dingo convinces it to follow another kind of order which the Matrix listens to Dingo's words carefully. The Matrix suddenly stops absorbing everything in its path just as the Shaman happily notices that Goliath and Dingo have stopped the Matrix together. The Matrix in humanoid form tells Dingo and Goliath to speak which as Dingo tells it that he wants to be a hero again, the Matrix agrees to help him just as it absorbs Dingo's armor which the Matrix tells him that it and Dingo are now joined together, teaching it law and order just as the Shaman happily notices the Matrix and Dingo becoming heroes together.
