Batwoman is a member of the Batman Family and a vigilante who operates in Gotham City. The original Batwoman, Kathy Kane, acted as a female counterpart to Batman with her side-kick Bat-Girl and romantically pursued Batman. In the modern era, her legacy is taken up by the army brat Kate Kane, a young woman expelled from West Point due to her sexuality. She is the cousin of Bruce Wayne, with her father Jacob Kane being the brother of Martha Kane, Bruce's mother. The Arrowverse introduced another Batwoman named Ryan Wilder, who became the new protector of Gotham City after the disappearance of Kate Kane. Batwoman has been involved with the Batman Family, Batman Incorporated, the Female Furies, and the Justice League.
Batwoman was created as Kathy Kane by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, first appearing in Detective Comics #233 (1956). The modern Kate Kane version was created by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, Keith Giffen and Ken Lashley, first appearing in 52 #7 (2006).
