- The last time I was on a team, people got hurt-- and it was my fault. The best thing I can do for the JSA-- and for the Green Lantern-- is to keep a healthy distance.

Synopsis for "Into The Fire"
In 1941, Green Lantern meets with J. Edgar Hoover at FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C. Hoover insists that he join the government-backed JSA; but Green Lantern refuses, preferring to work alone. However, Hoover reveals that he knows Lantern's secret identity is Alan Scott, and he has managed to obtain not only his records from his time in the Army, including his discharge for homosexuality, but also intimate photos he took with his lover Johnny Ladd of them wearing nothing but underwear and combat boots. Hoover blackmails Alan into working with the JSA or he will release the photos and ruin his life.
Back at Alan's home in New York his friend Derby Dickles, who is aware of his sexuality, advises him to do a few token missions with the JSA to satisfy the Feds; but Alan refuses, afraid that he may be discovered if he joins a team. They hear a report of a bank robbery on the radio and Alan flies out to deal with it, although the radio reports that Green Lantern is already on the scene.
In 1936, Alan and Johnny are engineers working for Project: Crimson, a top-secret military project to locate, store and harness an ancient source of power known as the Crimson Flame. They also maintain a romantic and sexual relationship in secret. The ship they are on finds the Flame in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, just as Johnny asked Alan to run away with him when the mission is over. They open their containment device and seemingly draw the Flame in, when suddenly more gouts of the Crimson Flame burst up from the water and attack the ship, causing it to capsize. Johnny almost falls overboard but Alan is able to catch him.
In 1941, Alan reaches the bank to find everything under control, and the police officer in command claims that he was just there and carried the robber; a gunman dressed only in underwear and combat boots, towards the pier. Alan is confused, when suddenly a ball of red energy hurtles out of the sky towards them. Alan flies up to stop it, while the Flash runs in to evacuate the bystanders. Alan destroys the ball of energy with a blast from his ring and finds the mysterious gunman dead on a nearby roof. He carries the gunman down to the Flash below and the Flash tells him that the gunman looks like he drowned, yet somehow also has severe burns on his arms. Alan looks down at the man's face and recognises him.
In 1936, Alan rights the ship by discharging the stored Crimson Flame, seemingly saving his comrades, but two tendrils of the Flame rise up and grab Johnny, dragging him down into the water. Alan hears the voice of the Crimson Flame in his head say "Firrssst we brinng Deathhh...". He has a mental breakdown and is committed to Arkham Asylum.
