― Mazin |
"Mazin" [1] is an Easter egg in Sonic CD. He has since then gone viral due to a multitude of reasons, being well-known by many in the community.
The Easter Egg
Mazin was modelled after Masato Nishimura, Mazin itself does not have a personality.
Appearance
Mazin is a dark blue hedgehog with blue shoes. His skin is a light purple, as are his gloves, shoe cuffs, and the stripes on his shoes. His face resembles that of a human, and his eyes are completely black. his mouth is also partially black due to shading, and he has a cleft chin.
Origins
Mazin is a part of an Easter egg found in Sonic CD known as the "Fun Is Infinite" Easter egg. By entering the sound test menu and inserting the numbers "46, 12, 25" in this order, the original image will fade onto the screen, along with the theme for the final boss in the game. Despite its appearance, the Easter egg in itself was a joke, as the Easter egg Mazin is modelled after one of the employees at SEGA Enterprises, hence the "uncanny" humanoid face.
However, due to the rather eerie nature of the Easter egg to US audiences (and the differences in boss themes), the screen quickly spread as a well known horror story among the community, to the point some considered it a Creepypasta. Many would even point out that the word "Majin" can be translated to mean "devil" or "demon", further adding fuel to the fire. Many today still believe in these stories, and the Easter egg has become notorious and infamous in both the Sonic community and the Sonic.EXE community.
Trivia
- Despite not having a personality, many consider Mazin lighthearted, only wanting to spread fun to those who play Sonic CD.
- One of the main reasons that the general public found the screen to be more disturbing was the difference in final boss themes between regions. (US vs original JP themes)
- It's written as Mazin, not Majin.[2]
- Masato Nishimura continues to work and contribute to Sonic games to this day, making him one of the most consistent artists for the Sonic series.
- It is a common misconception that the shading around Mazin's mouth is a moustache. However, Masato Nishimura himself has gone out of his way to debunk this claim.
- Majin's screen was rumoured to be an anti-piracy screen meant to scare those who pirated the game. This was debunked.
