"We sure went through a lot together, didn't we... It was fun. I may never see you again, but... take care, junior... I mean, Serge." â Karsh |
Karsh (ă«ăŒă·ă„ KÄshu?) is one of the four Devas of the Acacia Dragoon's who wields an axe and a fiery spirit in Chrono Cross. He is also the son of Zippa and the blacksmith Zappa.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Karsh has long, layered white hair with spiked bangs, and red eyes. He is a man of muscular yet thin build, and wears a white coat that has a jagged design that features turquoise, red and gold. His coat is tapered at his waist with a large black belt with silver buckles, and gold trim. He has white gloves with exaggerated cuffs, and large oversized pants that also feature the same colour designs as his coat, but without the turquoise. He also wears simple white shoes.
In a scene where Karsh is an adolescent, he wears a blue-grey, tight, sleeveless turtleneck, thick white arm bands with red stitching, black pants that have a red capelet with white trim belted around his waist, and short black boots with emerald green gems embedded in them. His long white hair is tied in a high ponytail, fringing his hair on each side of his face.
Personality[]
Karsh is described in the game for being a "rough and tough" person which he inherited from his father Zappa's personality, yet also shows compassion to his closest friends. As one of the four Devas, Karsh demonstrates his leadership qualities when he faces both Serge and Kid at Cape Howl along with Solt and Peppor especially towards his fellow members Zoah and Marcy.
The most important people in his life was his rival Dario, as well as Glenn and Riddel. Karsh's rivalry with Dario was shown in flashbacks because he also had feelings with Riddel and was competitive against him for Riddel's affections. He became upset upon learning that Riddel is engaged to Dario which builds up his jealousy to him, leading him to lure him out at the Isle of the Damned to seek the sword Masamune and was forced to kill him due to the Masamune's evil influence and possession.
Karsh shows his guilt for killing Dario after meeting his dimensional counterpart at the Forbidden Island in Home World, eventually revealing to Serge, Riddel, Glenn, and Radius that it was Dario himself who told Karsh to kill him while trying to regain control of himself due to the Masamune's evil influence until Lynx covered up the ordeal - rumoring that Dario was killed by demons. Once Dario is freed, Karsh proclaims his gang to be back in business once more, although Dario changes his focus onto rebuilding Viper Manor into an orphanage.
Karsh greatly respects his parents' dimensional counterparts in Home World and after learning about his own dimensional counterpart, being among those who were killed and frozen in the Dead Sea, as well as learning of the poor relationship between his parents and their dimensional counterpart in Home World, Karsh was disgusted to see his parents renting out his room for Pierre to stay in.
Story[]
Born to Zappa and Zippa, Karsh grew up in Termina where he was raised learning the art of combat and lived in a side room of Zappa's Smithy. In close proximity to Dario and Glenn, he began a rivalry with the heir to the Einlanzer (prev. Dario) and competed against him in the Viper Tournament of Swords, among other things. He also developed a secret admiration of Riddel, who unfortunately preferred the company of Dario. Notwithstanding their rivalry, the two became full-fledged Devas before the year 1017 A.D. and tore up the battlefield together. Karsh was devastated, however, when in that year Riddel and Dario revealed their intent to marry. To make matters worse, the two received an assignment to combat monsters at the Isle of the Damned immediately after. There, they happened upon the demonic Masamune which Dario seized and was corrupted by. Under Masamune's influence, Dario tried to kill Karsh, who struggled to reason with him to no avail. Karsh ended up striking Dario at his request, believing to have killed him; Lynx then appeared and admonished Karsh to tell no one of the "accident[1]". Karsh's reputation suffered, as rumors had begun to spread that he killed Dario out of spite for his engagement to Riddel.
Karsh continued to practice and flex his skills as a Deva until the year 1020 A.D. when he was sent to Cape Howl with Solt and Peppor to apprehend a "ghost boy." He encountered with Serge and Kid where he displayed his fiery character and tendency to fly off the handle, which was starkly contrasted with his hasty retreat made after his defeat. He grudgingly returned to Viper Manor only to witness the infiltration of the manor by Serge's party a day later. News of a Porre invasion then prompted the Dragoons to retreat to Fort Dragonia. Karsh accompanied General Viper and fought Serge in Mount Pyre with Zoah and Marcy (retreating once again upon defeat). After the ceremony took place, a shocked Karsh found the shattered Dragon Tear and Viper who was close to death. Karsh took him back to Termina and hid out with Zoah in the Dragon's Tail bar where they then schemed reclaim the Manor. Upon Riddel's kidnapping, he was put over the edge and became motivated to go with Serge and Norris in their second assault on the manor. Soon after he reached safety with the other dragoons, he was summoned to the Isle of the Damned by Solt and Peppor where they accused him of killing Dario and fought him. Karsh proved his good name upon defeating them and swore his innocence.
He later had the chance to personally meet and reconcile with Dario (albeit the one he did not kill) on the Forbidden Island in Home World, and was happy to see he was released from the evil of the Masamune. Though he wanted Dario to join the team and fight alongside him, Dario noted that he was too weak at present. Karsh then paid a visit to Zappa and Zippa of Home World, who had been missing their own son Karsh for three years (where he had been frozen with the other Dragoons in the Dead Sea). He too, saw his own parents and expressed disgust at them for renting out the room to Pierre, where his mother then reassured him that his coloring books were safely stored away. After returning to Another World, he expressed anticipation of the final battle with his famous trademark quote - "Ohh Yeahh! Let's get it on"
After defeating the Time Devourer, Karsh reflects with Serge about what they'd gone through together, deciding to no longer call him "junior", and to take care before he depart back to Home World.
