The Motion Sensor is an equipment item featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

"Tactical ground-based sensor that detects enemy movement within its radius."
— Create-a-Class 2.0 description

The Motion Sensor is similar to the Portable Radar in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It is a piece of equipment that finds enemies by emitting a little circular ping. It is similar to the Heartbeat Sensor. Allies are not able to see the motion sensor on the mini-map. It can be hacked if a player has the pro version of Hacker, and players with Hacker Pro will remain undetected by the motion sensor. Note that the Motion Sensor is not limited by any material or height, only its range. The motion sensor does not time out, as it remains useful until destroyed, picked up, or when the player dies. The Motion Sensor can be temporarily disabled via jamming, but jamming does not destroy the Motion Sensor, only render it inoperable until the jamming effect in question ends.

The Motion Sensor is essentially a portable, short-range Spy Plane. It has a short delay between 'pings'. Its use in Hardcore is limited as its findings can only be shown through the mini-map, which is disabled in hardcore. This can be mitigated by looking at the map on the pause menu, but this is an ineffective workaround.

Most forms of damage are capable of damaging enemy Motion Sensors, or the user's own Motion Sensor. Gunfire, explosions, and melee attacks are all capable of damaging or even destroying the Motion Sensor. When destroyed, a small noise is emitted, and the multiplayer announcer will declare to the Motion Sensor's current owner that their piece of equipment has been destroyed. Aerial killstreak strikes like the Napalm Strike and the Rolling Thunder have a tendency to destroy Motion Sensors even if they are placed indoors.

Hacker Pro is the only way to be immune to the Motion Sensor. Players with Hacker are able to see exactly where the Motion Sensor is, and beyond that, players with Hacker Pro can steal control of the Motion Sensor for themselves, stripping the original user of their radar, and potentially revealing the original owner.

Like other pieces of equipment, it is possible to jam the Motion Sensor. A Concussion Grenade or Flashbang that lands within proximity of the Motion Sensor will jam it momentarily. If the Motion Sensor is within the range of an enemy Jammer, the Motion Sensor will be useless until the Jammer is removed, or if the Motion Sensor is moved away from the Jammer's area of effect. If the Motion Sensor is within the Jammer's radius of influence at all, even at the very edge of it, the Motion Sensor will be completely jammed. A player who owns a Motion Sensor that gains a Jammer through Hacker Pro cannot jam their own device with the Jammer; however, the owner of a Motion Sensor can jam their own device with tactical grenade usage. In Hardcore, Motion Sensors can also be jammed or destroyed by teammates either through direct damage or usage of tactical grenades.

Call of Duty: Ghosts[]

"Paints the targets with tracers that allow enemies to be tracked through objects."
— In-game description

The Motion Sensor appears in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Instead of showing a ping to its similar predecessor the Portable Radar, it will paint the enemy with an orange glow. The top of the Motion Sensor launches up as an enemy approaches it similar to a Bouncing Betty, and it also briefly induces the victim with a flashbang effect. This paints enemies in a similar way to the Oracle and Recon. Users are able to see the painted enemies through walls. This effect goes away after 15 seconds. The Motion Sensor is ineffective against users that use the perk Incog.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Contrary to its name, an enemy will still be shown on the radar in Call of Duty: Black Ops and be painted with an orange glow in Call of Duty: Ghosts, even if not moving.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

  • The Motion Sensor has a small keypad visible.
  • The Motion Sensor makes a slight swishing sound when nearby.
  • If a player hacks a Motion Sensor while already having one deployed the old one will be destroyed.
  • The Motion Sensor is modeled directly off the TUGS (Tactical Unattended Ground Sensor) personell and vehicle sensor.
