The Black Rayquaza (Japanese: 黒いレックウザ Black Rayquaza), also known as Lucius's Rayquaza (Japanese: ルシアス‎のレックウザ Lucius's Rayquaza), is a recurring Pokémon character that was once owned by Lucius, as the leader and the most powerful member of his Six Heroes in Pokémon Horizons: The Series.

History

Rayquaza with Lucius and the other Six Heroes

Pre-series

100 years prior to the events of the series, the Black Rayquaza travelled with its trainer, Lucius, in his quest to find the Pokémon paradise Laqua. One day, they saved Rystal and her Terapagos from a group of bandits and after quickly befriending Terapagos, they started travelling together. On their travels, they met other five Pokémon, Arboliva, Galarian Moltres, Lapras, Kleavor, and Entei, who alongside Rayquaza, formed the Six Heroes. Another day, Gibeon and his Zygarde also joined the group thanks to their shared interest in Laqua.

The trio, now known as the Explorers, eventually found Laqua. However, Gibeon's obsession over the Laquium that was found deep within the paradise caused the crystals to expand and spread its mist across Laqua. The crystals started destroying everything and making wild Pokémon go feral. Lucius releases the Six Heroes to help and Rayquaza tries to bury it down with a Draco Meteor, but it wasn't enough. Lucius and Rystal refuse to give up and in response, Terapagos changed into its Stellar Form. It used its powers on the Six Heroes to seal the Laquium away inside a giant barrier, but with Lucius trapped inside as well. Afterwards, the Six Heroes were scattered around the world due to an explosion created by the Laquium.

Inside its Ancient Poké Ball, Rayquaza ended up in the sea and eventually washed up on the shoreline of an island, where it was found by Roy's grandfather a few years prior to the series, being later gifted to his grandson.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Liko meeting the Black Rayquaza

In The Ancient Poké Ball, Liko's pendant started to glow in conjunction with Rayquaza's Poké Ball, which finally opened during a battle between the Rising Volt Tacklers and the Explorers. The Shiny Legendary Pokémon briefly battled everyone in the area, right before flying away in the direction of Paldea but not before staring at Liko. Since then, the Rising Volt Tacklers, Roy in particular, started seeking Rayquaza around the world, forming bonds with the other members of the Six Heroes like Arboliva and Moltres, but failing to get in time to where Rayquaza was said to be.

Kabu spotting Rayquaza

It was mentioned in Welcome to Paldea! when Alex, Liko's father, said that the Black Rayquaza was heading towards Artazon. It was mentioned again by Brassius in Nemona and Brassius and…, who confirmed Rayquaza arrived at Arboliva's Forest where a giant Arboliva lived.

In The Future I Choose, Liko and Roy found out about the Six Heroes' story in Alex's books, knowing now that Rayquaza was Lucius's main and most powerful Pokémon.

In Kabu's Battle Training!, Kabu revealed to have seen Rayquaza. Soon after, the Legendary Pokémon went towards the west of Motostoke.

Rayquaza facing Terapagos

In Lapras's Feelings for its Friends, the Rising Volt Tacklers reencountered the Black Rayquaza in the sea right after Lucius's Lapras joined them. In Roar of the Black Rayquaza, Rayquaza was suddenly attacked by Amethio's Corviknight and Ceruledge, but it easily defeated them, before starting to attack the Rising Volt Tacklers as well. This forced Terapagos to transform into its Terastal Form and use Tera Starstorm to counter Rayquaza's Draco Meteor shower to protect its friends, which left Rayquaza amazed before it left once again.

Rayquaza lured by the Explorers

In A Challenge from the Explorers, Rayquaza was mentioned by Coral, revealing that the Explorers were planning to capture the Sky High Pokémon. In the next episode, Spinel put his plan into motion, which involved trapping Friede to buy time while Coral, Sidian, and Chalce fought Rayquaza and attempted to catch it. With the help of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Rayquaza managed to free itself from the trap created by the Explorers, but thanks to a reckless Self-Destruct used by Coral's Glalie against Rayquaza, it was sent crashing into the Brave Olivine, damaging the ship.

In From So Far Away, most of the Explorers retreated, aside from Amethio. The Black Rayquaza was confronted by Liko and the others and readily accepted Liko's offer to battle it. Amethio later joined the fray and teamed up with Friede, with them Terastallizing Ceruledge and Charizard, respectively, but both were eventually defeated by a devastating Dragon Ascent. Liko and Roy confronted Rayquaza next, but despite Fuecoco learning Flame Charge and Sprigatito evolving into Floragato, they were unable to do much against the Sky High Pokémon. Before leaving, the Black Rayquaza locked eyes with Liko again, seeming to take note of the resemblance she bears to its partner, Lucius.

Personality and characteristics

Not much is known about the Black Rayquaza. It is the very first and most powerful member of the "Six Heroes". It appears to be very aggressive and for some reason and prefers to fly away from the ones seeking it, including its former teammates and Terapagos, roaming around the world instead. It has also shown some kind of interest towards both Terapagos and Liko. This is probably because Liko is Lucius and Rystal's great-great-granddaughter and Terapagos is an old companion of its. Diana also theorizes that it wants to see Terapagos's true power. Rayquaza also had a really close bond with Terapagos, which was the only Pokémon that did not fear it.

Trivia

  • The Black Rayquaza is the first Shiny Legendary Pokémon to be owned by a Trainer.
  • In its appearances, the Black Rayquaza possesses a brilliant, crystallized appearance, heavily similar to a Terastallized state, but lacking a Tera Jewel on its head.
    • As seen in HZ075, Rayquaza didn't have that appearance before the incident in Laqua. This implied that when Terapagos used the Six Heroes to stop the Laquium from expanding, some energy was left in Rayquaza.
