In addition to fixed items, a great many creatures in game have random treasures in their inventory, those treasures can be stolen, and will drop upon the creatures' death.
The exact item(s) generated depends on which random treasure files the creature holds, each placeholder file will generate one item from their pool (row). RNDMAG01-03 & RNDTRE01-06 files have a bell curve, thus more likely to get items in the middle columns, while the others are supposed to have an equal drop chance for all items in the row. If the “items” listed do not exist in-game, or are undroppable, then if chosen by chance, no items will be generated.
The item is determined when the creature is loaded once you enter an area for the first time. Only creatures that have respawned or are scripted spawns would randomly generate a different item when reloading an area.

"Poor"[1] random treasure can be obtained from creatures and be found in areas whenever the item with the code RNDTRE01
is involved.
While the chances to get nothing are 27% in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, this will not happen in other games from the Baldur's Gate series. In the first part, there's a 5%-chance to get a random scroll and a 12%-chance for 2 gp; in Baldur's Gate II, the latter is reduced by 3%, which now yield a spell scroll for "Identify" instead of a random one, and the chances to obtain 1 gp are increased by 5%.

"Average"[1] random treasure can be obtained from creatures and be found in areas whenever the item with the code RNDTRE02
is involved.
While the chances to get nothing are 9% in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, this will not happen in other games from the Baldur's Gate series. In Baldur's Gate II, a find of 10 gp is replaced with a spell scroll for "Identify", and an Onyx Ring with a random magical item of low value.

"Rich"[1] random treasure can be obtained from creatures and be found in areas whenever the item with the code RNDTRE05 is involved. In the Enhanced Editions, it may also be the result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge.
While there's no Diamond, Emerald, Moonbar Gem and Pearl Necklace anymore in Baldur's Gate II, chances for a random magical item of low value are risen by 10% and for one of high value by 4%.

Low-value magical treasure[]
Magical or enchanted items of low value[2] may be gained whenever random average, well-off, wealthy or rich treasure is found, i.e. obtained from creatures or found in areas, or – in the Enhanced Editions – as a result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge. The better the random treasure, the better the chances for magical treasure, which go up to 14% if rich treasure is found in Baldur's Gate II.
While there's only one Arrow of Dispelling or Bolt of Polymorphing, +1 ammunition always nets five pieces, opposed to only three for +2 ammunition. Arrows of Dispelling, Bolts of Polymorphing and arrows and bolts +2 are replaced with random equipment of low and medium value in the series's second part.

High-value magical treasure[]
Magical or enchanted items of high value[2] may be gained whenever random wealthy or rich treasure is found, i.e. obtained from creatures or found in areas, or – in the Enhanced Editions – as a result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge. The chances for magical treasure go up to 6% if rich treasure is found in Baldur's Gate II.
Wands will have ten charges. However, these, together with an Arrow of Fire, the Potion of Heroism and the ones for "giant strength" are replaced with random equipment of all values in the series's second part.

Magical "poop"[]
Introduced with the original Baldur's Gate add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, though not used in the successor Baldur's Gate II, random magical or enchanted "poop"[2] becomes only available in Siege of Dragonspear, and only during a single conversation and under certain conditions: as possible reward for the quest The Good Druids.[3] This is also the only opportunity to obtain a random fourth level scroll.
The Wand of Lightning comes with four charges, and there are four Bolts of Biting and two Arrows of Ice possible.

1st-level scrolls[]
Spell scrolls for wizard spells of level 1[4] may be gained whenever random poor, average or well-off treasure or that of a magical kind with low value is found, i.e. obtained from creatures, found in areas or – in the Enhanced Editions – as a result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge. In Baldur's Gate II, one out of four of the possible results is replaced with a scroll for higher spell levels.

2nd-level scrolls[]
Spell scrolls for wizard spells of level 2[4] may be gained whenever random wealthy treasure or that of a magical kind with low value is found, i.e. obtained from creatures, found in areas or – in the Enhanced Editions – as a result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge. Due to a bug, there's a chance of 5% to get nothing in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, which is fixed in the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. In all three games, there's also a chance of 5% to find a certain letter – rather than a spell scroll – that's impossible to obtain otherwise; if its add-on Siege of Dragonspear is installed on top of the Enhanced Edition, this is replaced with a true spell scroll, also for the main campaign. In Baldur's Gate II, all possible results are replaced with scrolls for higher spell levels.
Except for duplicate entries, the chances for each scroll are equal.

3rd-level scrolls[]
Spell scrolls for wizard spells of level 3[4] may be gained whenever random rich treasure or that of a magical kind with high value is found, i.e. obtained from creatures, found in areas or in the Enhanced Editions – as a result of three of the possible rolls during a wild surge. In Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, it may also be the result for magical "poop" – a possible reward for the quest The Good Druids.[3] Due to a bug, there's a chance of 5% to get nothing in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, which will not happen in other games from the Baldur's Gate series. The very rare scroll for "Wraithform" can be obtained as random treasure only in the original base game; it is replaced with a scroll for "Dire Charm" with the installation of the original add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, in complete editions and in the Enhanced Edition campaigns, making it unobtainable at all in the Original Saga. In Baldur's Gate II, all possible results are exchanged for scrolls for higher spell levels.

Cut random treasure[]
Tales of the Sword Coast[]
With the original Baldur's Gate add-on Tales of the Sword Coast, an additional random treasure table is added to the base game, named RNDEQUIP
, and remains throughout the Baldur's Gate series. It is a copy of RNDMAGIC
in the series' first part, and is changed to mirror RNDWEP
for the second part. However, it is not referenced in any of the games.
Also, a line – which is not carried over into the Baldur's Gate II file – is added to the RNDMAGIC
table, but remains unused in the original game and the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, until one single conversation refers to it during the Siege of Dragonspear campaign; see magical "poop".
Siege of Dragonspear[]
Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear adds two random treasure items by the code RNDTRE06
and RNDTRE07
to the game files which could have been used in ways similar to the others: found e.g. on creatures or in areas, or being obtained via dialogues or as a reward for quests. The add-on for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition also expands the according tables. Both items, however, are not referenced in-game. In addition, if the new lines in RNDTREAS.2da
were intended to determine the treasure for one or both of these new items, they would not work, and RNDTRE06
wouldn't yield anything if it was used by the game; the treasure for RNDTRE07
is defined correctly in RNDTRES.2da
.
The random results from these two new lines in the table only hold certain amounts of gold pieces, ranging from 2 to 15 , with an average of 10 as treasure.[1]
Chance | 25% | 25% | 25% | 25% |
---|---|---|---|---|
Item |
If it would appear in-game or be referenced by any script or dialogue, RNDTRE07
would yield one out of four pieces of magical jewelry, with equal chances for each of them.[5]
Bugs[]
- Baldur's Gate (1998)
Content from the original Baldur's Gate main campaignTales of the Sword Coast (1999)
Content from the original Baldur's Gate campaign Tales of the Sword Coast As one possible result for a random 2nd-level spell scroll, the scroll for "Fog Cloud" has a chance of 5% to be rolled in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast; however, both scroll and spell were cut during development and didn't make it into the final game releases. Therefore, nothing will be found if a six is rolled on that table; this is fixed in the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Siege of Dragonspear, and another scroll for "Detect Invisibility" may be found instead. - Baldur's Gate (1998)
Content from the original Baldur's Gate main campaignTales of the Sword Coast (1999)
Content from the original Baldur's Gate campaign Tales of the Sword Coast As one possible result for a random 3rd-level spell scroll, the scroll for "Invisibility, 10' Radius" has a chance of 5% to be rolled in the original Baldur's Gate and its add-on Tales of the Sword Coast; however, both scroll and spell were only fully implemented in the successor of these games, the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, hence nothing will be found if a seven is rolled on those tables; the scroll is available in the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Siege of Dragonspear.
