See also Charm Creature.
Charmed is a status effect in all games of the Baldur's Gate series.
It can be caused by spells like Charm Person and Charm Person or Mammal. Some races, e.g. elves, have resistances against the effect, and some creatures are completely immune to it. A hostile charmed being will cease hostile actions against the person or creature (and their affiliates) it was charmed by until the spell wears off.
If no other active party members are left, then the last remaining character getting charmed means game over (can especially happen when playing solo).
Charm also allows the player to continue to access shops in the event that vendors turn aggressive (eg if you're caught pickpocketing while doing a no-reload playthrough or in certain side quests that involve attacking vendors like Neera's or Mae'Var's), as you can talk to npcs after charming them and vendors will have the same dialogue options they had before turning aggressive.
Charming others[]
A number of creatures in the games have unique dialogue options if charmed, and some may reveal information — even create Journal entries —, Gorion's Ward would otherwise not have gathered at all or only on more complicated paths. Sometimes, however, the reply is … surprising.
