X. By many, CLAMP's greatest title. A great dark story about the end of the world, with some stunning visuals. Since, it has some great reputation and a big fandom, it was inevitable to get animated. In 1996, a movie based on X was released. While it can be great in the visual and sound department, it really felt rushed. Like they couldn't fit the whole story in one movie. In my opinion, it could have worked better if they could make a serialised movie based on X, gradually developing the story and the characters. It could be a trilogy to sixology, depending on how many chapters of the manga each movie would develop...
The story is set in the end of 1999 and to the beginning of the new millenium. Kamui, after his mother died (in a kinda disturbing way for me), returns to Tokyo to fulfill a promise he gave his friends before he left. As a prophecy fortells, he will decide about the future of Earth for whetever it will be destroyed or not. As he meets up with his old childhood friends, he encounters the Dragons of Heaven, who will save the world from certain destruction but leave it the way it is, and the Dragons of Earth, the ones who will destroy the Earth. By the time we get to know which character is which, the killing spree starts. Everyone kills each and very fast (personally, I was like "Oh, shit, it's Ultimatum all over again!!!"), we don't get to see any kind of character development whatsoever and by the time we see how the story fairs and try to understand... it's over. As someone who loves and watches many movies, whatever they are Hollywood, anime, or Pixar, or Bollywood (I watch those one for the lolz) movie I got completely disappointed by the whole picture. I mean, I hear from Internet 'bout X
all the time, finally found it (kinda hard to input the right words in torrent search, let alone find a proper torrent) and had a huge letdown. The whole thing about end of world seemed as a poor excuse to see dead bodies and fights. Also, the character department is not good. In the beginning, we have so many characters that makes the movie be good, but in the end we are reduced to 2. I really wanted to learn about the other characters, but I didn't have time to get to know who is who, let alone learn the personalities better. If I give it to someone who doesn't watch anime, he'd be disappointed. These words don't come out from me as an otaku, but as a seasoned movie watcher, who enjoys going to the cinema to watch good movies. Oh hell, I'll put it on "not-watchable" movies (since i'll NEVER ever see it again...).
But, surely one of the greatest aspects of X (both screen and paper media) is arguably, its animation and visual. Considering the time it was made, it's simply awesome. It can easily match modern anime in terms of animation. The characters have great drawings, they have this serious, dark and mature aura, something really good for the kind of story it has. And the visuals are also great. Its soundtrack is also great and fitting. The same goes for the voice actors, expect for Kamui 'cause I couldn't help feeling he should have another voice...
Conclusion: F**k the movie, watch the TV series, or even better, read the manga, which, in my understanding, is great.
Peace out. \V/,
