Angry Birds Space Assault! is an unreleased game by KLab America which was planned to be a spinoff to Angry Birds Space. It was described as a "3D action strategy collectable game".[1] The project was first made public in May 2019 when the designer Glen Dahlgren uploaded the contents to his portfolio.[2]
History[]
Development of the game began when Rovio showed interest in working on an Angry Birds game with the company KLab[3]. When the project was proposed, staff at KLab thought about making the game 3D. The idea evolved into a spaceship mechanic, where the player could move the slingshot around a structure to try and locate weak points. The team created a demo movie as a proof of concept, as well as a presentation to show off to Rovio.
A prototype was created by a development team in the Philippines, with them wanting to approach the game from another angle.[3]
Rovio was pleased with the team's work, and said the project was "in good hands", but the executives at KLab Japan weren't as excited about the prospect, as Angry Birds wasn't as big in Japan as it was elsewhere. A prototype was put together to show to KLab Japan, but didn't sway their opinions enough to get the project greenlit.[3] The project was shot down soon after, and never saw the light of day.
Plot[]
Through unknown means, a group of pigs are able to procure interdimensional portal technology, and begin using it to steal eggs from the birds. When The Birds discover this after finding a secret piggy base, they use the portals to assemble a multiversal band of elite birds to combat the threat.[4]
Gameplay[]
The game was planned to be a gacha game that revolved around building a deck of birds, similar to Hearthstone[5]. The player would collect birds, bringing them into levels, and trying to destroy the amount of pigs required to complete a level. There was planned single player campaign, co-op, and pvp modes[6].
Birds[]
The playing experience outside of levels would involve the player collecting birds through either in-app purchases or as rewards for quests[7], adding them to their collection. From then, the player could either add them to their ship's crew[8] or dismiss them back to their home dimension[9]. Dismissing birds would send them back to their home dimension, providing tech, and kept birds would be stored in the barracks[10].
Each bird would have special attributes, color, attack strength, skill, size and rarity. The bird's color would dictate how much damage it would do against building materials (for example, a blue bird would do more damage against blue blocks), and matching colors between crews and ships would provide additional bonuses. Attack strength would be how much base damage a bird does against material.
Similar to other Angry Birds games, the birds have certain skills that can be used during levels. It's important to note that only rarer birds have skills, and the common ones only do damage to structures[11]. Skills are either activated automatically, or through tapping the screen. Some skills would be usable in single player, while others would be exclusive to multiplayer.
Single Player Skills:[]
- Homing
- Blast Wave
- Plague
- Lure
- Transform
- Decoy
Multiplayer Skill:[]
- Repair Other Ships
- Combo: Chain Lightning
- Combo: Mark Target
Another factor to the birds would be their size. A bird's size value dictates how much space on a ship it takes up. Larger birds will take up more crew slots, leaving less room for other birds. The final trait of the birds is rarity. Rarer birds have better abilities, and are harder to obtain from pickups.
Pigs[]
Pigs appear as enemies in single player, but can also be collected like birds for use in the pvp mode[12]. Pigs have similar attributes as birds. Health is how much damage a pig can take, size and weight affect their attributes in-level, and color effected the amount of damage taken from birds of certain colors.
Pigs also have skills, although they activate differently from how birds activate abilities. Pigs have skills that activate if they are harmed or killed during a level. Rarity also functions differently to how it works for birds. In addition to deciding how difficult it is to receive the a pig, it also changes the likelihood of receiving that pig from the Piggy Generator during pvp[13].
Ships[]
While the game makes use of the Slingshot formula that the series is known for, the Slingshot itself had considerably more depth. The player would have spaceships, which all have unique attributes. The player can level up a given ship by collecting XP of "tech", which converts into XP[14].
The ships have a specific color that can effect the birds on board, as well as a fuel meter that must be kept full during missions[15]. Ships can only house a certain amount of birds at a time, only having a certain amount of crew slots. When a ship takes too much damage during a mission, the player fails the level.
Gamemodes[]
Singleplayer & Co-op[]
The singleplayer/Co-op campaign involves going from level to level with your crew of birds, destroying enemy forts and bosses. There are two types of missions, those being Exploration Missions and Assault Missions[16]. Exploration missions involve the player traveling from vantage point to vantage point, discovering secrets, recovering eggs, and destroying pig fortresses. These missions were also intended to be procedurally generated[17].
Assault Missions are essentially boss fights. The players arrive at a massive Pig structure, and must get past various defenses. Each player gets their own path to fly across, and must work together to destroy the boss pig contained in the building. Co-op also has exclusive bird abilities, such as being able to combo off of other players' shots or sending support birds to aid their ship[18].
PvP[]
The PvP mode has two phases. During phase one, the players set up their pigs onto pre-built structures, being able to insert special pigs from their collection. during phase two, the players will take turns launching birds at each other's structures. Power-ups are hidden in cages where eggs usually spawn during singleplayer[19].
A player wins by popping all of their opponent's pigs, their opponent's ship is destroyed, or they have the most kills by the end of the game[20]. The gamemode allows for up to four players, with a free-for-all mode and a team mode[21].
Events[]
Little is known about how events would function. They would have a limited run, and be exclusively Assault Missions.
Levels[]
The gameplay of levels involves the player flying their spaceship, with a limited crew of birds, on a path around the level to clear an objective[22]. If the level is an exploration mission, that entails retrieving a certain amount of eggs and popping a certain amount of pigs. The player would move along a track around a level, moving around levels in order to have better angles to hit structures.
Paths can be obstructed with mines that the player must destroy to continue. There are also cracked planets that hide secret pathways when destroyed[23]. The player also has a mini map that they can use that displays the location of pig structures nearby. Eggsteroids need to be broken free from cages, while Pigs must be popped directly.
Pigs have certain defenses they can employ. There are shields that prevent birds from hitting structures from specific angles, and can only be destroyed by having nearby generators smashed. Turrets can damage the player's ship directly, but must recharge after firing a shot[24]. They can be taken out by a bird.

Trivia[]
- Around May 2021, the creator of the project Glen Dahlgren took to the comment section of his upload to ask how so many people found his blog post when he had admitted the article was unfinished. He is quoted as saying, "It's amazing that people are finding their way here."[25]
- Three years later on November 26, Glen would inform the wiki with new information regarding the development of the game.[26]
- Some sounds and music were reused from Angry Birds Space.
- The Taladro Birds used to represent different colors was actually a fan-made bird design. While it's unknown if it's the origin of the character, the oldest known trace of their design comes from the user knux95 on DeviantArt.[27][28]
