Names have so very little meaning.
~ The Baby

The Baby is a major antagonist within Urasawa's Monster and is a politician that wants to eliminate the minorities in Germany. He is well known in the Neo-Nazi community and works with a mysterious organization that is lead by Peter Capek, Gunther Goedelitz and Helmut Wolf. Their plan is to transform Johan into the "new Adolf Hitler" and make him the leader of Germany as their puppet.

He is voiced by the late Kazuo Kumakura in Japanese and Kirk Thornton in English.

Personality[]

The Baby hitting Tenma with a stick

The Baby attacking Tenma for his racial inferiority.

Little is known about the Baby's background including his real name. All is known is his status as a racist politician and being a high ranking member of two ultranationalistic political parties. He is best describe as a racist, xenophobic, ruthless, malicious and arrogant man. Despite appearing as a "gentle old man" towards Nina, this is just a facade since he thinks that he can complete his plans with Nina as bait to get her brother's attention. He expresses immense disgust towards anyone that don't fit with his racist views. For example, he beat Tenma with a pool cue due to his Asian ancestry and appearance and attacking neighborhoods filled with Turkish immigrants. The Baby shows no remorse for his actions, and in fact shows absolute delight in it and the destruction of other minorities that he caused. The Baby express disappointment when his plans has not come to fruition and says that his "dinner" is ruined.

His plan to make Johan the "new Adolf Hitler" comes from his view on Johan as the perfect Aryan to lead the country, but does not realize that Johan does not care for such disgusting views and continued to hit Tenma for telling him that Johan hates all humans equally. This shows that the Baby does not understand Johan at all and his nihilistic views. To make matters worse, he was willing to allow his men to kill Dieter, who is just a mere child traveling with Tenma. Though he did that to interrogate Tenma, he express gleefulness when attempting to harm the boy show more of his sadistic nature. However, he seems to care about his men, expressing shock when one of them was killed by Helmut Wolf's subordinates, though it is worth noting that the Baby was probably more shocked by the subordinate's actions than anything else. Despite his negative traits, he does care for a prostitute that he tends to hang around with and grew to trust her and open up to her. This is the only time he is ever humanized in the series. He is also a coward at heart since Nina easily intimidates him with a gun; he was so scared by the confrontation, he says "most definitely Johan's sister" and wet himself.

Appearance[]

The Baby looks like an ordinary elderly man that has blond hair and blue eyes. He wears a purple suit with a red polka dot bow tie and have fancy-looking shoes.

Trivia[]

  • Like Adolf Hitler, the Baby does not represent his ideologies at all. Since he suffers from Dwarfism, he could've end up in the Nazi's eugenic programs in 1933.
  • His arson attacks and Neo-Nazi activities actually happened in real life during the rise of Neo-Nazism in the year of 1990's Germany and the 1993 Solingen arson attack.
  • It is believed that the Baby is a reference or homage to the "The Man From Another Place" in the popular TV series Twin Peaks. He even imitates the character's sense of dancing and passing by red curtains when he was first introduced. However, the Baby is a far more violent, cruel and sinister character than the Man from Another Place, being much more overtly antagonistic and less affable than the Arm.
  • In the Another Monster novel, it is revealed that the Baby is a high-ranking member of two political parties called "Pure German People's Party" and the "Reform and Progress Party."
