~ Dr. Oppenheim's catchphrase. |
Dr. Oppenheim is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime series Monster. He is the Chief of Surgery at Eisler Memorial Hospital, and passes down orders from Director Heinemann to the other doctors. He supports Udo Heinemann's corruption, and doesn't care about saving the patients of his hospital, only about money and career advancement.
Biography[]
He is first seen at a press conference as one of the doctors taking credit for the successful surgery on a famous opera singer, despite the fact that it was Dr. Tenma who performed the operation. It is revealed that he called Tenma out of surgery on an injured Turkish construction worker in order to have him switch to the opera singer (who had arrived long after the Turkish man). This resulted in the worker's death when no other doctor was able to save him.
A few nights later, Dr. Tenma was about to operate on Johan Liebert, who had been shot in the head. As he was about to start, Oppenheim burst into the operating room and again ordered Tenma to abandon the surgery, this time to save the mayor of Dusseldorf, who had suffered a blood clot. Tenma explained over the phone to Director Heinemann that only he was able to save Johan's life, but despite hearing this, Oppenheim pressured him to abandon the boy anyway. However, Tenma disobeyed orders and operated on Johan, saving the boy's life.
As Tenma left the operating room, the doctors who worked on the mayor blamed Tenma for his death. As Tenma tried to defend himself, Dr. Oppenheim joined in the denunciation, telling Tenma that his actions had caused a loss of prestige for the hospital. He denounced Tenma to Director Heinemann, who demoted Tenma from his position as head neurosurgeon. This left Tenma's career in ruins, with no hope of getting a better position.
A few days later, Dr. Oppenheim and Dr. Boyer met with Director Heinemann to complain about the twins, who they felt were an inconvenience for the hospital. Oppenheim was disgusted by the gifts that Johan had been sent by concerned citizens, and was paranoid that the hospital might be targeted by whoever killed the twins' parents. Oppenheim was also revealed to be involved in corrupt dealings with other hospitals, so that they would support Director Heinemann to become chairman of the board.
Dr. Heinemann told Oppenheim to dismiss Tenma as Johan's doctor, so that he would not get any media attention from caring for him, which Oppenheim readily agreed to do. He also stole candy from Johan's bedside, along with the other two doctors. It turned out Johan had poisoned the candy, and Oppenheim died in the hospital later that night. In a twist of irony, Tenma was then promoted to Chief of Surgery, Oppenheim's former position.
