Team Flare (in Japanese: ăƒ•ăƒ¬ă‚¢å›£ Flare-dan, literally Flare Gang) are the main antagonists of PokĂ©mon X/PokĂ©mon Y. Their goals involve making money and aiming for a more "beautiful world" by using the Ultimate Weapon to wipe out all life.
Biography[]
Pokémon X/Pokémon Y[]
Team Flare appears in X and Y. Their goal is to produce money, while also aiming for a "beautiful and better" world. They are first encountered in Glittering Cave where they attempt to steal the fossils of the researcher who resides there. They are stopped by the player. Once defeated they are in next scene in Route 10, examining the mysterious rock formation. The player is spotted by one grunt who wants revenge for ruining their plans in Glittering Cave. Once defeated they are next spotted in Geosenge Town, where they are examining the rock formations there. In Route 13, they are found ciphering electricity from the power plant and blocking the entrance to Lumiose City as well as causing a black-out across the city, preventing the player from accessing the fifth gym. They are eventually stopped once more by the player. They do not appear again until the player has received their seventh badge from the Anistar City gym where Team Flare's leader Lysandre sends out a live broadcast to all trainers via the holo caster, telling them that Team Flare plans on wiping out all life on the earth by using the "ultimate weapon". A machine built by the king of Kalos, 3,000 years ago that exterminated all life in Kalos for many years and using the legendary Pokémon of Kalos to activate it by going to Lysandre Labs in Lumiose City, where the player watches as the weapon emerges from the ground of Geosenge Town. Lysandre is eventually forced to cease operation once the player defeats him and is chosen by the legendary Pokémon to save Kalos. Lysandre using what remains of the legendary Pokémon's Power in the machine to destroy it and crush himself as well. After Lysandre is buried under rubbed due to firing the ultimate weapon, Team Flare disbands.
Pokémon Masters[]
Team Flare makes their first appearance in Pokémon Masters within the Kalos-themed chapter, but this time is supporting characters to counter against Team Rocket. First appearing to interrupt a performance Diantha was holding for a peace ceremony, their attempts to gain control over the crowd are quickly stopped by both the champion and Emma, using their Pokémon to thwart the grunt's schemes. Forced into fleeing, Looker proceeds to inform Paulo on the nature of the group after the attack, Sycamore also noting of Lysandre's lack of change in his views. As the heroes head into a marketplace, Looker steps aside to talk to Malva, who was working on both fronts. Here, Malva explains that the sudden outburst was unordered by Lysandre, alongside noting of her hopes for Looker to root out those she sees as troublemakers within the group. While Looker denies the idea of acting Team Flare's actions, Malva also brings up knowledge of these figures attempting to steal weaponry for their own gain (Team Flare keeping this as a form of "insurance" for Lysandre), something that causes the detective to do his own investigation into the matter instead. As this talk is going on, however, more agents of Team Flare appear to cause chaos within the town square, causing the protagonists of the Kalos games to take action. As Tierno and Trevor help civilians escape, Calem, Serena, Shauna, and Paulo stay behind to fend off against the grunts. While the goons were more than ready to take the heroes on, it is the arrival of Diantha and Malva's own Team Flare agents that forces the unruly members to flee. As the more noble agents of the group give pursuit, Malva appears to blackmail Looker into helping, warning of the potential of escalation to their conflict. Malva also reveals to the detective of her spies throughout Pasio, ready to spring when given the command. This second attempt to twist Looker into helping succeeds, albeit not without some grumbling on the gumshoe's end.
After breaking into their facility through a disguise, Looker reveals himself to two grunts as they attempt to steal some data. With Emma and Paulo aiding the detective, it is revealed that the heroes personally set out with Diantha in hopes of shutting down the splinter group's operations. As the other heroes set out in search of Volcanion, however, they bare witness to the mythical Pokémon locked in battle with Yveltal. After Sycamore's Xerneas and Serena's Zygarde interact to the clash, however, Lysandre makes his formal debut with his new Sygna suit, being revealed to have been training his Pokémon. However, Lysandre does make a point that he isn't responsible for the unruly behavior of Team Flare, and in fact, Lysandre was planning to stop their chaos from continuing. As Looker's group closes in on the Team Flare goons, it is further revealed through Emma's Espurr that the rogue members of Team Flare were merely spies acting on behalf of Team Rocket, attempting to gain information about a superweapon the organization was building and antagonize Lysandre into striking against them. Ultimately, it is the actions of law enforcement and Team Flare that ultimately stop their threat, with the rogue grunts being held in Flare's custody in order to receive punishment.
Other Media[]
Anime[]
In the anime, all of Team Flare believe that their actions are for a good cause just like Lysandre. However, they are much more of a threat than in the games or even any other villain in the anime. Originally, due to the absence of the Ultimate Weapon, their plan was to use Zygarde to cause extinction. When that failed, Lysandre tried to use a special rock, taking the form of Zygarde, and combine it with the sundial at Anistar City to destroy the world. It was only thanks to the invention of Ash and his friends, and as well as Z1 and Z2 making their Complete Forme, that Lysandre was defeated. Afterwards, Xerosic unsuccessfully tried to create Team Neo Flare and finish Lysandre’s work.
Pokémon Adventures[]
In the manga, Team Flare is far greater menace due to committing very despicable acts like mind controlling and threatening to harm others unless they get their way. They also have a great influence on all Kalos, having spies as ordinary citizens everywhere and controlling the media.

Trivia[]
- The Flare scientists share their initials in all languages they appear in. The pattern is based on the classification of solar flares being ABCMX, X being the largest and explaining Xerosic's design.
- The female grunts have a near-similar hairstyle to Gauche from Tales of Vesperia.
- Even though they're called Team "Flare", the grunts and scientists tend to use Fighting, Electric, Poison, or Dark Pokémon. Also, their only Fire-type would be Houndour and its evolution Houndoom, while Lysandre and Malva use a male and female Pyroar respectively.
- Many of Team Flare's targets share notable similarities with Team Rocket's targets: a cave where a regional Fossil can be obtained (Glittering Cave and Mt. Moon), a Poké Ball-producing facility where the Master Ball can be obtained (Poké Ball Factory and Silph Co.), a Pokémon burial ground (Route 10 and Pokémon Tower), the regional Power Plant (Kalos Power Plant and Kanto Power Plant), and a location where experiments involving in agitating a certain Pokémon are conducted (Frost Cavern and Lake of Rage).
- Team Flare's goal is similar to the Elite Four's in Pokémon Adventures. Both desire a perfect world and plan on using a Legendary Pokémon to eliminate almost every human on the planet.
- According to a girl in Lysandre Cafe, it costs 5,000,000 Pokedollars to join Team Flare.
