~ Odile begs for her father Rothbart, to turn her human again when she was accidentally turned into a pig. |
Odile is the secondary antagonist in the 2003 direct-to-DVD animated Barbie film, Barbie of Swan Lake. She’s Rothbart's daughter.
She was voiced by Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice Hosenstein from the 1994 sitcom Friends.
History[]
Odile was born as the daughter of Rothbart and an unknown woman, and accompanied him when he returned to the Enchanted Forest to take it from his cousin, the Fairy Queen, and turned the Fairy Queen's elves into animals. When Odette tried to leave the forest with Lila after pulling out the forest's Magic Crystal, which deemed her the hero who would stop Rothbart's reign of terror, Odile went with Rothbart to intercept them. Rothbart asked Odile if she would like a new feather pillow, and she happily said she'd take one, leading to him transforming Odette into a swan (presumably to kill her and turn her feathers into Odile's pillow). However, Odette escaped when Lila distracted Rothbart, and the Fairy Queen gave Odette the Magic Crystal in the form of a crown to protect her.
When Rothbart tried to kill Odette with his magic ring, the crown protected her with a magic pink barrier. Rothbart cut his losses and left, and Odile was indignant about the fact she wouldn't get her pillow. Later at Rothbart's palace, Odile went through her chest of jewels and complained they were all unsuitable and she had nothing to wear. While Rothbart mused over how to get the crystal from Odette and that he'd rip her crown off her head somehow if he had to, Odile whined at Rothbart that she wanted the crown and he should get it for her. She suggests to him that he just destroy Odette, commenting "any old human" could do it, which gave him the idea of getting a human to shoot Odette in her swan form.
While Rothbart lured Prince Daniel into the forest to make him shoot Odette, Odile went to Swan Lake and admired her reflection in the water. Unbeknownst to her, the elf children Carlita and Ivan were watching, and Carlita got some skunks to spray Odile repeatedly to torment her. Odile shrieked in rage as they sprayed her over and over, and screamed for Rothbart. Rothbart, who was busy trying to attack Daniel and Odette with his magic, went to find her and scared away the children and the skunks with his presence. He nearly choked on Odile's horrible stench as Odile complained about how she'd just had the worst day of her life and demanded he take her home. Rothbart turned into his vulture form and flew off towards their home with her hanging on to his talon, prescribing her a long bath with vinegar and tomato juice to get rid of the smell.
After Rothbart kidnapped Erasmus and took the Book of Forest Lore from him, which told of how to rob the Magic Crystal of its power, Odile allowed some ravens to comb her hair and snapped at one when it accidentally jabbed her with the comb's teeth. Rothbart put a spell on the emerald necklace Odile was wearing and caused it to turn red, causing Odile to complain because that was her "third favorite" necklace. Rothbart told her that the necklace was enchanted to make her appear as Odette to Prince Daniel, which would trick him into confessing his love to her instead of Odette and cause the Magic Crystal to lose its power. He asked her if she could do the job of tricking him, and Odile happily agreed. Rothbart proudly explained that once the Crystal's power was gone, they would fulfill their destinies and he would become the ruler of the Enchanted Forest. In response, Odile proclaimed she'd be the most stylish creature in it. When Rothbart stated they may take the royal palace next, Odile cackled shrilly before Erasmus told Rothbart it wouldn't work, causing the sorcerer to turn him into a worm.
While Odette and her friends rescued Erasmus from Rothbart's home, Odile and Rothbart went to the royal ball in disguise as Odette and her father. Odile danced with Daniel; at the conclusion of their dance, Daniel asked her to marry him under the belief she was Odette while the real Odette watched in horror outside the window. Instead of responding, Odile stepped back and allowed Rothbart to ask Daniel if he truly loved his daughter; when Daniel replied he loved "Odette" with all his heart, the Magic Crystal lost its power and Odette fainted. Rothbart sardonically thanked Daniel for his help and he and Odile both revealed their true selves. Odile mockingly asked Daniel what day they should get married and laughed, then transformed into her vulture form alongside her father and left.
Outside the ballroom, Odile and Rothbart found the unconscious Odette and turned back into their human forms. Rothbart took Odette's crown off of her and, after taking out the crystal for himself, gave the crown to Odile for her to wear. Odile put it on and giggled over how it fit her, then took it off to admire it. While admiring it, she saw Daniel sneaking up on Rothbart in the reflection and alerted her father. Daniel confronted Odile and Rothbart with a sword, which Rothbart turned into a feather. Rothbart tried to turn Daniel into a pig, but he dodged and rolled behind Odile, causing the spell to hit her instead. This devastated Rothbart, and he immediately tried to comfort his daughter while the Fairy Queen's sparks of light carried Odette away to safety in her carriage.
Now turned into a pig, Odile desperately pestered Rothbart to restore her to normal. However, because the Fairy Queen and her group were escaping with Odette in their carriage, Rothbart snapped and yelled at her to be quiet, then transformed into his vulture form and flew away to pursue the heroes. Odile was left wailing for him to wait, turning helplessly around in circles and snorting in her pig form.
After Rothbart's defeat, Odile was restored to normal off-screen and forced to be a maid in Erasmus' library. She whined about how nobody cared that she was allergic to dust and sneezed while dusting off Erasmus' books, which caused what remained of Rothbart to pop out as a cuckoo clock bird nearby.
Personality[]
Odile is vain, spoiled, and unappreciative towards the gifts her father gives her. However, she becomes angry and whines when she doesn’t get what she wants.

- Odile's mother is never seen or mentioned. This is carried over from the original ballet, however.
- Despite meeting at the beginning, Odile and Odette never once speak to each other in the entire film. This is another (probably unintended) similarity to the ballet, where Odette and Odile do not interact because they are usually played by the same ballerina.
- Odile is allergic to dust.
