Mammon is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Striker) of Season 2 in the adult animated black comedy web series Helluva Boss. He is the archenemy of both Fizzarolli and Asmodeus, being the former's ex-boss.

He is one of the Seven Deadly Sins, serving as the embodiment of Greed and the ruler of the Greed Ring. A celebrity in Hell who exploits the talents of smaller celebrities to increase his wealth and notoriety, Mammon acts as a caricature of the worst aspects of the entertainment industry, having served as Fizzarolli's abusive boss before he quit.

He is voiced by Michael Cusack, who also voiced Grim, Mr. Frog, and Rex in Smiling Friends.

Appearance[]

Mammon is a large, comically overweight demon wearing a jester's outfit that is green, black and yellow. He has four arms, glowing green eyes, sharp green teeth and a purple tongue with green and black stripes in the interior of his mouth. His outfit is patterned with black and yellow diamonds and dollar signs and he carries a green and yellow cane with a gold dollar symbol on it. He also wears asymmetric gloves with two being black and two being white, as well as an inner layer that is white and green. He also occasionally exposes four more pairs of eyes on his forehead when threatening Fizzarolli. He speaks with an Australian accent.

When in his full demon form, he becomes a lot more fearsome, terrifying, and monstrous as Mammon's extra eyes are fully exposed and he grows in size greatly. He has eight sharp legs, his jester's cap's ears become sharper and he gains an arthropod-like thorax, which gives him a more spider-like appearance.

In his youth, Mammon was shorter, slightly thinner, and wore a rockstar-like attire with neon green sunglasses with black lenses. His neck was visible and he wore white and grey clothing instead of his current green, yellow and black outfit. He wore a brooch with a dollar sign on it with the same sign being visible on his cap.

In Mastermind, Mammon is shown wearing a dark green business suit with skeleton-like details on the sleeves, black gloves, a crown, a slightly different cap and collar, and a lime green necktie with a black dollar symbol on it.

Personality[]

Mammon is a very greedy, sadistic, power-hungry and arrogant demon. He loves exploiting others for his own gain and enjoys taking pride in himself, to the point that almost everything has his image on it. He is also very foul-mouthed and is not against exploiting his own fans for his own personal gain. On that note, Mammon is shown to casually cause physical harm to the audiences of his shows for a wide array of reasons. He is also misogynistic as he thinks women can’t be funny and even told his female fans to give up on their dreams of being a clown, although he would admit that he rethought that statement after watching the Glam Twins' performance. He has a foul mouth, more so than even most demons, making liberal use of the "c-word", likely due to being Australian, or voiced by one at least.

He's also knowledgeable on laws and the affairs of his fellow sins. He also demonstrates in his final scene that he is wrathful, declaring vengeance on Fizzarolli and Asmodeus for humiliating him. Throughout the episode, it's shown that he is incompetent and prone to not thinking things through. This is best shown when he listens to the entirety of Fizz's song "2-Minutes Notice" which has him go into detail about his hatred of Mammon and how he intends to quit working for the Sin, and yet Mammon comically fails to pick up on the fact that he is the one the song is directed at (even being shown to be enjoying it as shown by his cheerful clapping) until Fizz directly name drops him at the end, even though Asmodeus told him at the start the song was about him. He also didn't think things through when attempting to blackmail Asmodeus and Fizz with the threat of revealing their relationship to the audience to keep the latter from quitting, never anticipating that the audience would support the relationship and being left stumped when they end up being accepting once Asmodeus finally admits the truth.

While he treats Fizzaroli with adoration and pride in public (even calling him the son he never had), it becomes evident that he doesn't care for Fizzaroli at all outside of exploiting him for profit. He puts intense pressure on him to be the ideal clown performer and forces him to interact with his fanbase even when the latter doesn't feel comfortable doing so, and only gives him the time to compose himself after a mental breakdown so that he can do well in his performance. He's also abusive towards him, mainly in a psychological manner with his emotionally manipulative tactics towards him but several lyrics in "2-Minutes Notice" imply he can be physically abusive too, and his pictures at the beginning of the song indicate he has used him as a knife throwing target. He also thinks nothing of selling sex robots in his likeness to his perverted fans, even hypocritically fat shaming Fizz to make him lose weight so that he doesn't have to make adjustments to the robots, even though Mammon is hardly one to talk in regard to peoples weight given his own stature.

It is revealed in "Mastermind" that Mammon does have a good relationship with Leviathan, who he invites to hang out, and who Leviathan doesn’t actually seem to mind unlike the other Sins. It’s also implied from Mammon’s wording that he and Leviathan are in a romantic relationship.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Mammon's past except that he was alive since the beginning of Hell itself, and has been a rival of Asmodeus since then. At some point he became ruler of the realm's Greed Ring, thus joining the Seven Deadly Sins, Hell's group of rulers. At some point he made 'Loo Loo land', a rip off of Lucifer's theme park Lu Lu World (which resulted in a lawsuit). In his youth, Mammon was a famous clown, being well-known and liked in Hell, especially by Fizzarolli. One day, during a show, Mammon announced that he would be holding an annual Clown Pageant (like a beauty pageant for clowns), and he would have people perform to find new talent to exploit for money, though he discourages women from participating, believing them not to be funny. Fizzarolli would win one of the Clown Pagaents and as such, became Mammon's overexploited star, with robots modelled after him being made and Mammon forcing Fizz to overwork all the time, ensuring he looked as good for the audience as possible. As such, Fizzarolli would develop deep insecurities about himself and become obsessed with winning the Clown Pageant.

On the day of the latest Clown Pageant, he puts more pressure on Fizz to win by telling him that his competition was much stiffer while also telling him to lose more weight so he doesn't have to make more adjustments to the Fizz robots. After the pageant enters the finals, he congratulates Fizz and Glitz and Glam for their performance, while also admitting that the latter 2's performance made him reevaluate his views on women not being funny to be clowns. He later forces Fizz to meet his fans, despite the latter not feeling comfortable with it. After Fizz's intense encounter with Arick, Mammon decides to let Glitz and Glam go on before him so he can have time to compose himself, while also threatening him into "getting his sh*t together". After having a pep talk with Asmodeus, Fizzaroli goes on stage to perform, singing a song expressing his hatred for Mammon and his refusal to put up with his abuse anymore. Amusingly, Mammon is completely oblivious to the fact that he is the subject of the song, even after Asmodeus smugly told him as much, actually enjoying the song right up until Fizz directly calls Mammon a "sad sack of shit", at which point he becomes completely enraged by Fizzarolli’s merciless insults.

After his performance, Fizz announces to his audience that he's finally quitting his job as a clown. This sends Mammon into a ballistic rage, causing him to transform into his true monstrous demon form to threaten Fizz. Fizzaroli fearlessly refuses to be intimidated by his former boss and Asmodeus appears behind him to defend Fizz from Mammon. Mammon then threatens to reveal Asmodeus' romantic relationship with Fizz if he lets the latter quit working for him. Unfazed by this threat, Asmodeus admits his love for Fizz to the audience himself, who are supportive of the relationship, much to Mammon's dismay and embarrassment. Losing his only leverage over the couple, Mammon tells Asmodeus that he is going to regret revealing his secret and gives Fizzarolli one last grin before teleporting out of the tent laughing maniacally.

In "Mastermind", he's one of the members of the court when Blitzo and his friends are on trial for illegally using Stolas' grimoire to cross over into the human world to stalk and kill humans. Unlike Asmodeus or Beelzebub, who know about Blitzo's nature and try to prove him innocent, Mammon doesn't have any of it and berates them for trusting an imp and enjoying spending time with lower-class demons, unlike the rest of Hell’s higher ups. This causes Asmodeus to nearly lash out on Mammon until Beelzebub intervenes to try and calm him down, who throws a penis-shaped popsicle at Mammon's chair, causing the two to flip each other off.

When Satan asks the demons if they want to listen to hours of testomony or just jump straight to the execution, almost all the demons choose the execution as Mammon mocks Asmodeus and Beelzebub for choosing to listen, causing the latter to get his mouth stuffed by the penis-shaped popsicle. Just before Blitzo is about to be executed for his crimes, Mammon asks Leviathan, Sin of Envy, if they could go out after the imp's execution, to which the right head agrees to the idea while the left head is against it. Along with other Sins, he sings the choir of how Satan is the law of Hell during Lucifer's abscene. After Satan announces that the court is now dismissed and tells everyone that it is lunch time, Mammon pulls out two buckets of chicken nuggets and drumsticks and literally stuffs his face in them, much to disgust of the other Sin leaders by Mammon’s obnoxious and sloppy eating habits.

• Since the sins are meant to be based on circus acts, it's likely that he's meant to be a clown.
• He is the first of the sins to be portrayed strictly as a villain, as Asmodeus, Lucifer and Beelzebub have several redeeming qualities that don't make them objectively evil.
  • He's also the only Sin so far to not get his own song describing what he embodies, which is ironic since his first scene implies that he is a musician of some sort.
  • Although Mammon is not the only Sin to have villainous qualities, with Satan also being shown to be villainous, the remaining two Sins, Belphegor and Leviathan, are candidates for their potential roles when they get time to have their personalities shown (either heroic like Lucifer or Asmodeus, either neutral like Beelzebub or either villainous like Mammon himself).
• It's implied that he is in charge of creating Hell's currency, as both the banks and the money has his face on them.
• Fans theorize that Mammon eats the money he makes due to Mammon from literature doing so in some instances. This could also explain why he gained so much weight since Fizzarolli has been making him lots of profits.
• In Loo-Loo Land, a note from Mammon describing why Loo-Loo Land is legal is shown, and in it, Mammon states that he is friends with Lucifer, the king of Hell, although this could be false.
  • His note also shows that he likes to doodle his face next to his signature.
• Mammon's remark on women not being funny is likely a self-aware joke by the series creator Vivienne Medrano, as Helluva Boss has often been criticized for its "childish" humor that relies too much on its mature content and overt use of profanity. As such, when Mammon makes this remark the credit "Written by Vivienne Medrano" briefly appears as a gag.
• Thanks to his conical shape and green coloration, Mammon is likely meant to resemble a Christmas tree, befitting his nature as Christmas is criticized as a highly capitalist holiday due to all the sales going on then. He also resembles Oogie Boogie from the Nightmare before Christmas, a greedy, gambling sack of bugs, fitting Mammon's spider form and imagery, and him embodying the sin of greed.
• Mammon and Asmodeus are said to have known each other since "the start of Hell", implying that the two are older than Hell itself and that they could be fallen angels like Lucifer, given that the deadly sins are described as such in various mythological texts.
• The theater Mammon owns seems to be based off the Sydney Opera House, befitting his Australian accent.
• Unsurprisingly, despite only being the Sin of Greed, Mammon displays traits from the other six deadly sins as well:
  • Lust: Mammon has no problem with sexualizing his employees for profit, such as creating robotic sex doll clones of his most successful employee Fizzarolli, even keeping some for himself. Ironically, this makes Asmodeus, who is the Sin of Lust and Fizzarolli's boyfriend, uncomfortable to the point where he admits that he hates making sex dolls with Fizzarolli's likeness for Mammon. Ironically, Mammon is confirmed to be asexual, showing that this depraved behaviour is just another way of making money for him rather than outright perversion.
  • Pride: Mammon has somewhat of a superiority complex, having his face plastered on all his products. He also feels intense rage towards Fizzarolli when he quits, believing himself to be the source of all the imp's successes.
  • Envy: Mammon is highly competitive, ripping off more successful competitors for money. One example is how he founded the knock-off amusement park, Loo Loo Land to rip off Lucifer's own far more popular and successful theme park Lu Lu World.
  • Wrath: Mammon has a very short temper, being prone to violence and threats when things don't go the way he wants. When Mammon heard that Fizzarolli was quitting his job, he was so enraged that he created a massive explosion that could have endangered many people around him, later on creating an even bigger one that destroys his theater and possibly harm his audience.
  • Gluttony: Mammon is a very large and overweight demon, most likely from overeating all the time, as shown when stuffs his face with junk food while watching people perform. This is ironic as while Mammon seems to be very lax with his diet, pictures from Fizzarolli's performance indicate he forced the imp to stay as lean as possible, indicating a degree of hypocrisy. Even Beelzebub, the Sin of Gluttony, is disgusted when observing him eat.
  • Sloth: Despite being an immensely wealthy celebrity, it's indicated that Mammon has no real talents of his own, merely exploiting the talents of celebrities such as Fizzarolli managed by him to amass his fortune, something of which he inadvertently admits to his audience before backtracking. It’s even said by Asmodeus that Mammon doesn’t even do "clown sh*t" anymore, which further shows that Mammon is only exploiting people for his own benefit rather than do anything himself.
• Mammon looks and acts similar to Adam, the main antagonist of season one of Hazbin Hotel, both being egotistical misogynists associated with rock and guitars, though they both show some respect to some particular women, with Mammon admiring Glitz and Glam, as well as Leviathan, and Adam being best friends with Lute. Ironically, Adam is voiced by Alex Brightman who also voices Fizzarolli.
  • His relationship with Fizzarolli also parallels the dynamic between one of Hazbin Hotel's secondary antagonists, Valentino, and the show's tritagonist, Angel Dust, being a largely powerful entity exploiting his worker's sexual market value for personal gain and abusing them in the process, however Mammon kept Fizz in check via additionally exploiting his dreams of working alongside him, whereas Valentino has Angel Dust under a contract and owns his soul. Additionally, Mammon is much less sexually depraved, violent and evil.
• It's noted that Robo Fizz's laugh sounds similar to Mammon's, further displaying how the Sin took advantage of Fizzarolli's talent to increase his own wealth and power.
• He is confirmed to be asexual^[1], though he's later seen asking Leviathan out in MASTERMIND, showing that he's not aromantic.
