~ Jakob's final moments before being crushed by the Doomsday Clock. |
Jakob Ingold is a major antagonist in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy game, Genshin Impact, serving as an overarching antagonist of several Fontaine World Quest series.
He is the current leader of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, a group seeking to survive Fontaine's prophesized doom by merging the wills of countless people into a single mightier will that may become a Descender, and thus be protected from the natural laws of Teyvat and survive its eventual destruction.
History[]
Early Life[]
Jakob was born the son of Eduardo Baker, a vigilante who was in charge of Fleuve Cendre. However, in an event known as the purge of Fleuve Cendre, the Maison Gardiennage raided the place, capturing Eduardo and any of his associates and exiling them to the deserts of Sumeru. However, on the way, some of his allies ambushed their escort and freed them, eventually regrouping with further allies and taking control of the town of Poisson, taking the young Jakob with him. There, Jakob met the son of the mayor of Poisson, Rene de Petrichor, and the two became close friends. The Court of Fontaine sent a man named Karl Ingold to act as a mediator between Eduardo's men and law enforcement, but negotiations broke down and a bloody event that would become known as the Siege of Poisson took place, where the Marechaussee Hunters, lead by Emanuel Guillotin, razed the town, killing many innocents in the process, including Rene's parents. The two children were taken to an orphanage called the Narzissenkreuz Institute. Once the pair arrived there, they met Alain and Mary-Ann, becoming fast friends. The group would often play together under the watch of Vice Director Basil Elton, a retired Admiral of Fontaine's Navy. The latter baked for them, but her cooking was remarked to not be particularly good, though an improvement from her younger years. The children would often play games together, pretending to be fantasy characters, with Jakob usually taking the role of an evil mage while Rene would talk the role of a dragon named Narcissus.
Cataclysm[]
When the devastating event known as the Cataclysm occurred, a monster known as Elynas appeared, devastating the land and sea of Fontaine. The Oceanids and Fontainian Navy were rallied to stop it, forcing Basil out of retirement. While Alain and Rene fought due to her leaving, Basil entrusted a feather in her cap, which the children often wondered about its significance, to Jakob, requesting he keep it clean for her while she was gone. In reality, Basil knew she would not return, entrusting them to her old friends Emanuel Guillotin, the same man who had lead the Siege of Poisson, who took in Alain and Mary-Ann, and Karl Ingold, who took in Rene and Jakob, as she had also predicted the catastrophe would flood the orphanage. Basil ultimately died in battle against Elynas, slaying it in the process, while much of Fontaine wass submerged in an event known as the "first diluvian period." Jakob, having changed his name to Ingold to match his foster father's, would view her death and false promises of return as a form of abandonment, something that would carry over to his adult life, and resented her deeply for it.
Journey to the Girdle of the Sands[]
Karl would take his two wards into the desert of Sumeru while they were still young to explore the ruins there. They came across many things there, such as Gray Crystals, some of which contained sealed wolf-like creatures. However, Jakob, who was only around seven at the time, began to fall ill during the trip, and the other two feared he would not survive the journey back to Fontaine in time to get treatment. Rene suggested they use Abyssal power they had come across in their journeys in order to revive him. Karl, still traumatized by the Cataclysm and the loss of his childhood friend Basil, denounced the idea, though Rene would attempt it anyway. Jakob not only miraculously survived the process, but was enhanced by it, granting him increased strength, longevity, durability and no longer needing nutrition to live.
To prevent their father becoming suspicious, the two acted behind Karl's back in order to hide Jakob's condition and investigate Khaenri'ahn ruins. Rene used the data they collected to craft a formula to calculate the life-cycle of civilization, recording how long they would last and what would come in the aftermath of their destruction. When he solved it, much to his horror, he found there would be no new world after Fontaine's destruction, its end marking the end of humanity. No matter how many different methods he used to solve it, the result was the same, unless a force from outside Teyvat itself ere to intervene. The results detailed how a flood that would put the one during the Cataclysm to shame, dubbed the "second diluvian period," that would fully destroy all of Fontaine and then the entire world, leaving no man or plant left standing and no chance for another world to follow. Jakob was traumatized even further and began to breakdown, but Rene, who believed he had found in answer in the form of some unknown force of "will" reassured him that answers lay within the history of Remuria and its Golden Troupe, believing the Abyss could act as their potential outside factor.
Return to Fontaine[]
Through their research, they took interest in the corpse of Elynas, the monster who had caused Basil's death all those years ago, and investigated it. Elynas was not truly dead, and its consciousness picked up on the boys' arrival. Believing this could be a suitable "will" the two set about researching the remaining flesh and blood present. The two argued over their course of action, with Rene being hesitant about immediately using them for research due to possible research risks while Jakob thought it would waste time, ultimately ingesting some of Elynas' blood against Rene's wishes. He proved unharmed, though disturbed and nauseous from the experience. While there, they encountered Alain and Mary-Ann, now both going by the name Guillotin, who were accompanied by Emmanuel Guillotin. Alain later recommended the two to the Institute of Natural Philosophy. Meanwhile, Rene and Jakob continued their experiments, culminating in Jakob being granted a new form, now able to transform into a multi-armed Abyssal being capable of wielding multiple elements. Rene attempted to use their findings to open a "passage" similar to the ones detailed in records they found in the ruins, but they were immediately swarmed by creatures similar to those they had seen sealed in crystal during the Girdle of the Sands expedition. Jakob leaped to his aid and used his new abilities to decimate the creatures, but he was ultimately still a child and was in constant tears during the ordeal.
Thanks to Alain's recommendation, the two were welcomed into the Institute by Director Dwight Lasker, where they worked with Alain on his research into technology from civilizations long past. Here, they met Alain's assistant, Carter Scherbius. As both were effectively aides to far more intelligent individuals, Jakob and Carter spent a lot of time together and thus got on very well, to the point Jakob felt like he was his only real friend in the Institute. Jakob noted that nobody there seemed to particularly like him or Rene, further deepening his friendship with Carter. The group were eventually invited to a picnic in the town of Petrichor by Carter and Mary-Ann, though Rene was distracted by leads on the Golden Troupe in the area and Carter, due to suffering from an unknown condition, fell ill. Learning of his condition, Jakob and Rene desired to save him, even more so after learning he too had gone to the Narzissenkreuz Institute in his youth. Growing disillusioned with Alain thanks to his stubborn nature, the two applied for their own project separate from his. They were given a separate lab in the same building, though it had to remain closed off to those not a part of the project due to the danger it presented. The two researched Abyssal entities and phenomena, collecting a red crystal from Dragonspine, which they would dub Scarlet Quartz, and comparing it to other known Abyssal phenomena. Jakob managed to find a link between it and a form of Abyssal corruption in Liyue, known as Dark Mud, and Elynas' remains. As progress slowed, Rene had Jakob convince people to join the project, with the latter proving surprisingly charismatic and convincing many to do so. Rene named those under the project the Narzissenkreuz Ordo in order to convey a sense of purpose and enforce loyalty, though effectively beginning its turn into a cult.
Meanwhile, Carter continued to deteriorate and, despite their best efforts, they were unable to pinpoint the cause of his condition. Jakob suggested they use the process Rene had used on him to save his life, and they proposed the idea to Carter, Jakob even revealing his form to Carter to truly convey what he was getting into and the possible ramifications. Carter agreed, but the procedure failed horribly, causing him to melt into sludge. Rene was able to stop his body fully deteriorating, but this just left Carter in a constant state of suffering, aware of his horrible fate but unable to do anything but wail and scream. Witnessing this, Jakob became an emotional wreck. Rene attempted to cut Carter's vocal chords to stop his cries, but they would simply regenerate with time. Alain eventually learned of Carter's fate and severed ties with his childhood friends, eventually going on to leave the Institute with his sister.
