Gyro is a minor character in the "Chimera Ant" arc in the manga/anime series Hunter x Hunter. He is the former leader of the NGL (the self-governed country where the Chimera Ant Queen resides). After he is killed and eaten by Chimera Ants, he is reborn as a Chimera Ant. Thanks to his strong will, he manages to break free of the Chimera Ant Queen's control and sets out to rebuild his kingdom. He is expected to be an antagonist in the future arcs.

Appearance[]

Gyro is first seen wearing a large down coat. During a flashback to his youth, his form is drawn as a silhouette.

Personality[]

As a child, Gyro was deeply devoted to his father. Despite the trauma, neglect, and physical abuse his father forced upon him, Gyro still looked up to him and viewed him as a god because he believed that his father truly loved him. He also believed that his father wanted him around because he'd never once asked Gyro to leave. It was because of this that Gyro managed to remain hopeful in spite of having to work tirelessly. However, upon realizing that his father never loved him and he only kept him around because Gyro brought in money, Gyro lost his humanity and believed that no one in the universe cared about him. Driven by hatred, he killed his father and set out on a quest to spread evil throughout the world. It is this overwhelming hatred, pride, and tenacity that allow him to break free from the Chimera Ant Queen's control. Despite his desire to spread evil, Gyro is still capable of extending empathy to others, creating a friendship with Zaiqahal over their shared hardships in life and the emptiness in their hearts. This friendship ultimately demonstrates that Gyro hasn't completely lost his humanity.

Gyro was forced to work ever since he was a child, which allowed him to learn to be efficient and productive - traits that helped him rise up in the world. He also displays incredible intellect, as he is able to create an entire kingdom despite starting out as an orphan with almost no money. He also possesses a natural charisma, which he uses to create the NGL. His charisma inspired deep loyalty in his subordinates, such as Zaiqahal, who, even after being reborn as a Chimera Ant, is still determined to locate and reunite with Gyro, going so far as to defy death for his sake.

Biography[]

Gyro grew up in a construction camp, and, at a young age, managed to learn how to mix concrete and brick before even learning how to talk. His father scarcely talked to him, forcing him to sleep on the bunk bed and only allowing him to leave twice to go to the bathroom before 9:00. His father would beat him at the slightest annoyance, such as when he'd move in his bed and night and cause it to creak, forcing Gyro to learn how to sleep absolutely still. His father constantly told Gyro never to make trouble for others, a mantra that Gyro treasured and viewed as the only gift from his father. Despite the trauma and abuse he endured, Gyro still loved his father for two reasons: first, his father stayed by his side all night when Gyro caught a fever at the age of five, and second, his father had never asked Gyro to leave the house.

At the age of 12, another boy made fun of his father while eating lunch and told Gyro his father only kept him around because he brought in money. Outraged, Gyro attacked the boy and was badly beaten. As he was being shoved to the ground, the boy revealed that his father wasn't the one who took care of him when he was five. Instead, it was the nearby neighbors, as Gyro's father had been out drinking as usual. Then, when the neighbors confronted him about this and asked how he'd feel if his son died, his father replied that it didn't matter if Gyro lived or died. Then, Gyro saw his father walking by and looked at him, but was utterly shocked when his father chose to ignore him. It was then that Gyro realized that his father never loved him, only viewing him as useful to make money and telling him not to make trouble for others to avoid any burden to himself. Gyro came to believe that no one in the world cared about him, and, since he was told never to make trouble for humans, he decided he must not be human.

Later that night, Gyro beat his father's head in with a hammer and killed him, taking his money and fleeing the construction camp. Gyro then began his goal to spread evil throughout the world: nine years after leaving the camp, he founded the NGL, and nine years after that, the NGL became a country with Gyro as its ruler. As part of his goal to spread evil, he developed the D2 drug and began manufacturing it on a massive scale. During this time, Gyro met and befriended Zaiqahal over their shared trauma, and they would often argue about whose life was worse.

Gyro was killed and eaten by the Chimera Ants who attacked the NGL, but he was reborn as a Chimera Ant. However, due to his strong pride and hatred for humanity, Gyro managed to retain his human memories, defying the Chimera Ant Queen and abandoning the hive to establish a new country, further detaching himself from humanity after being reborn.

When Gon and Killua are in Doli City after their encounter with Neferpitou, Gyro is said to be in the city, though the two never encounter him. During the attack on the Royal Palace of East Gorteau, both Ikalgo and Welfin remember Gyro as their king. Welfin (Zaiqahal's Chimera Ant reincarnation) believes Gyro to still be alive, so after the deaths of Meruem and the Royal Guards, Welfin goes with his friends to Meteor City to try and find Gyro as he creates a new nation.
