A day less for one is a day more for everyone else!

Cowslip is a minor antagonist of the Watership Down Book, The Film, TV series and Miniseries. However, he returns as a supporting antagonist in the TV Series 3rd season by helping General Woundwort by giving him his seer, Silverweed, in return for the destruction of Redstone Warren.

Appearances[]

Book and Film[]

Cowslip appears in the book and novel as a minor antagonist but plays an major role for Hazel and his warren, when Fiver attempts to call for everyone to help Bigwig he threatens him, when Bigwig survives Hazel and his group leave making Cowslip never appear again, before they left, Strawberry wanted to join and they accepted and he joined them on their journey to The Down.

He is later mentioned by Captain Holly and Bluebell where he attacks Pimpernel in a flashback looking for Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig, and Cowslip immediately ordered that they will be attacked and killed. He and his rabbits attacked the three, killing Pimpernel and wounding Holly. Holly ended up fighting back, planning on killing one of them for Pimpernel, and easily won against Cowslip. To save his own life, Cowslip admitted that Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig were on the Down. Holly left the cowardly Cowslip with a scratch.

Nildro-Hain, a deceased member of Cowslip's Warren is mentioned when discussing about does.

TV Series[]

Cowslip Watership Down 1999-2001 (S3)

Cowslip and General Woundwort in S3 of the TV Series

Unlike the other adaptions, Cowslip is more of a major character that plays a major role for Hazel's Warren, also unlike the other adaptions, in the TV Series he leads the warren and just like the Book, Film and Miniseries he doesn't go to help Bigwig in a snare but that isn't the last of him because later on in season 3 Cowslip is intelligent enough to plot the fall of Redstone Warren, led by Hickory, after they have left the Warren of Shining Wires. He also knows the placement of the snares unlike everyone else, giving him an advantage compared to the other rabbits.

Even though Cowslip is a giant rabbit, he is not a good fighter, and Bigwig can easily defeat him. However, as Cowslip says, he is a plotter rather than a fighter as seen when he plots the fall of Redstone Warren with General Woundwort in return for his seer, Silverweed. He is first mentioned by Holly in Season 1 Episode 3 where Holly says he left Pimpernel at Cowslip's Warren so Bigwig, Hazel, Fiver and Holly go to find Cowslip's Warren while leaving Blackberry and the others at Watership Down Warren to dig.

Then it is revealed he let Pimpernel die after he says Bigwig never existed and he is now gone when Holly says that Bigwig was caught in a snare, Bigwig, after hearing about what was said, goes to attack Cowslip and Cowslip quickly looses. When he is offered to go to the high hills (Watership Down Warren) he declines and laughs like a maniac, claiming the snares may get the others but not him and never will get him. And like the book, Strawberry goes and joins Watership Down Warren, leaving the Warren of Snares behind.

He later goes to make a deal with Woundwort before getting thrown out by Captain Vervain under the request of the General. He presumes Watership Down warren is living with the Redstone Warren rabbits and Woundwort thinks he tricked him after Captain Broom came out and said how a disease destroyed the Warren and how he never saw another rabbit for so long.

Miniseries[]

Cowslip says he is glad to see Hazel and his group

Cowslip says he's glad to see Hazel and his group.

In the Miniseries Cowslip, along with the rest of the rabbits of the Shining Wires warren, are shown with a purplish-red coat other than orange as said in the book. He is first introduced when he is humming to himself and skipping along like a human would until he sees Hazel and his group. Seeing they aren't doing well alone and that a storm is approaching, he invites them to join his warren as he claims the scrape they made doesn't look so comfortable and then excuses himself as he hates the rain. Later when they go to his Warren to join him for a day, he says he is glad to see them.

Bluebell, who in this adaptation goes with Hazel instead of staying behind and later joining Holly and is replacing Dandelion as a storyteller. Tells a story of El-Ahrairah, after the story was told, Cowslip reveals El-Ahrairah is nothing to them and that they need the dignity and will to accept faith before Silverweed begins his poem. Later on in the episode, when Bigwig is caught in the snare, he tries to stop the others from going to save him, saying that Frith has decided that it is Bigwig's time, and he will make sure it is. Blackberry, with the help of Bluebell, threatens him by saying they were Chased, Clawed and Drowned and if Cowslip didn't move right now he'd see why they made it this far, and Strawberry demands that he let them leave.

They then shove him out of the way and he angrily yells a threat at them saying that they are not safe out there and that if they are not in the warren they'll be dead by sunset. When Bigwig hears of what he said, he wants to go back and kill him and some of his Warren, but Fiver tells him that all they have to do is leave him and his warren. Before they leave his Warren, Strawberry, who is reimagined as a doe goes with them, leaving Cowslip and his warren behind. He is never seen or mentioned again after that.

Personality[]

Cowslip is a sadistic, strategic, liar that tricks rabbits into trusting him and leaves them to die as he claims in the Miniseries a day less for one means a day more for the others.
