♫ He's gonna take you back to the past.
To play the shitty games that suck ass.
He'd rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in his ear.
He'd rather eat the rotten asshole of a road killed skunk and down it with beer. ♫
~ First part of the AVGN's theme song.
What were they thinking?!
~ Avgn's famous catchphrase.

Fuck this game. Watch it go.
~ Avgn's second famous catchphrase whenever before he destroys a shitty game.
AAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!
~ Another of one of the Nerd's famous catchphrases.

The Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN for short, formerly the Angry Nintendo Nerd, often abbreviated as simply Nerd, and the F-cking Nerd) is the titluar character and main protagonist of the the web series of the same name

He is portrayed and created by James Rolfe who also plays numerous characters in the series.

In most episodes where he reviews a different variety of poorly made video games (or sometimes games that were a bit more well-received), he does this by complaining and overreacting while often shouting and swearing at the graphics, controls, difficulty, music, quality, or gameplay.

While originally portrayed as a flawed anti-hero, the Nerd would take on a surprisingly detailed history over a course of decades and eventually was revealed to be a dissociative individual with an extremely dark past, starting as Board James and fighting against a darker "Angrier" Nerd persona as time progressed, this would climax in his 2021 apparent finale where Nerd would finally confront the "Angrier" Nerd (though in a comedic twist it is suggested he simply returns to his previous aggressive (but not malevolent) "default" state rather than fully redeems).

Villainous Acts[]

  • In his review for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", he calls and threatens Jessica Rabbit and begins to curse and even threaten to kill her entire family.
  • In his review of "Halloween (Atari 2600)", near the end, he takes a dump of each of the children's Trick or Treat bags after reviewing the game but gives it to them.
  • In his Christmas special "How the Nerd Stole Christmas", he begins to steal each terrible game from the town of Gamesville but later redeems himself and gives them all back.
  • In his review of "Pepsiman", near the end, he gets upset after TV Guy never told him about his role in the video game after being half turned by Pepsiman and just pushes him into a Vat of Orange Soda without remorse by saying "Pepsi for funerals!"

As Board Game James[]

  • The suspected murder of "Motherfucker" Mike and "Bad Luck" Bootsey.

Physical Appearance[]

The Nerd is a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes. He looks like a stereotypical nerd. He wears a pair of glasses and dresses in a white dress shirt (sometimes short or long-sleeved). In the shirt pocket, he has some pens tucked away to throw at whatever frustrates him. Lastly, he wears a pair of khaki pants. In the episode, Desert Bus, he is seen wearing a pair of blue jeans rather than his usual khakis. The Nerd also occasionally wears a silver Atari jacket, and may wear items of clothing appropriate for the time of year, e.g. Santa's hat for Christmas, and even dressed up as a vampire for a Halloween episode.

During tough fights, the Nerd equips his NES accessories to kick the ass of anyone or anything in his way.

Once he dressed as the "BatNerd" when reviewing various Batman games, and wore apparel similar to that of Indiana Jones in an earlier review.

During the "RoboCop" episode, he is sporting a custom RoboCop inspired costume but with a front-loader NES as the visor and his breast pocket protector.

Personality[]

To put it lightly, the Nerd has serious anger issues, to the point of even destroying some of the games he reviews. He often drinks beer (either Rolling Rock or Yuengling), attempting to relieve his frustration and sorrow.

The Nerd's trademark is his filthy mouth. In almost every review he repeatedly swears to insult games. He's often quoted as saying that he would rather succumb to violent and scatological acts than have to suffer through the game he's reviewing. He seems to have few, if any, friends or acquaintances, even insulting children trick-or-treating at his house in the Halloween episode. That being said, the Nerd often acts very mean-spirited and cruel, and is generally unfriendly to most of the guests on his show. Despite all this, the Nerd also does reviews in a positive light on occasion, such as in the episodes: Nintendo PowerBack to the Future Trilogy, and Wish List (Part 2).

More aspects of the Nerd's personality are heavily revealed in Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie. It is shown that he does have a kinder and more noble side to him, as he has a strong love and care for his fanbase and puts himself in danger quite frequently to keep them safe.

He is also revealed to have a friend in a fellow gamer and fan named Cooper, and that he values video games above other things that most normal people would be more interested in. This is the reason why the Nerd tries to avoid romantic relationships or involvement with females ("Nerds before Birds").

The Nerd is also revealed to be dissociative in later works and runs on three distinct personas:

Board James[]

Board James

Board James - the "Pre-Nerd" persona

This persona predates the "Nerd" and was the start of his descent into apparent madness, though it is hinted that the "Angrier" Nerd had a part in the corruption of Board James - he is the most infamous of the three personas and the one that arguably commits the most heinous acts, as he becomes a murderer who kills his former friends in order to shed his "old" persona and embrace the "Nerd" entirely.

Board James is the only persona to openly recognize himself as having a name (the other two simply refer to themselves as "Nerd"), he is also the only one of the three personas who has no interest in video games and instead dedicated himself to board games.

The Nerd[]

Default Nerd

the "Nerd" - current and most famous persona.

The seeming "default" persona and the most well-known, often extremely cruel and prone to foul-mouthed rants he is still driven by a deep passion for games and an obsession with find the worst of the worst, while he can often be obnoxious in his acts and selfish he isn't often malevolent, though there are times when this changes; the "Nerd" becomes increasingly in conflict with the "Angrier" Nerd persona as his story arc progresses but seemingly defeats him in the 2021 finale.

The "Angrier" Nerd[]

Angrier Nerd

"Angrier" Nerd - as he appeared in the 2021 finale.

The most malevolent persona that "Nerd" currently manifests, unlike the usual "Nerd" this persona is deeply hostile and malevolent even towards himself and is in many ways an embodiment of the Shadow, the dark part of the mind according to some fields of psychology - he resembles the "Nerd" in appearance but differs in being much more malicious.

This persona is also rarely interacted with by any character save the Nerd himself, further highlighting the inner struggle to contain this hostile fragment of his own self.
