Overseer Alphonse Almodovar is the secondary antagonist of the 2008 action-adventure video game Fallout 3, the third main installment of the Fallout franchise.
He is the overseer of Vault 101, and Amata's father, who is to believed to be benevolent and fair leader, but is responsible for causing the deaths of many Vault 101 inhabitants.
He is voiced by Duncan Hood.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Despite being born at a time when the dwellers of Vault 101 were allowed to freely venture into The Capital Wasteland, formerly known as the state of Washington, Alphonse Almodovar developed a ruthless isolationist streak, believing that the overseers who opened the vault were idiots who only endangered the population. When the overseer went out into The Capital Wasteland and never returned, a young Alphonse became the new overseer, having the vault completely sealed of from the outside world and forcing all the adults to take an oath of secrecy, pretending that the vault door had never opened at all since The Great War.
Descent into Tyranny[]
Despite his extreme isolationism, Alphonse allowed a wasteland-scientist named James to move in with his infant child, The Lone Wanderer, in order to fill in the vacant vault-clinic, something he'd later come to regret. After his wife died their daughter Amata became best friends with the similarly aged lone wanderer.
During Alphonse's tenure as overseer he was obsessed with security to the point of oppression. While he made a number of good decisions early on, he ended up cultivating an atmosphere of strict adherence to rules and secrecy and instituting a cult of personality around himself. This was largely a failure however as the adults resented him, juvenile delinquency rose up, birth-rates dropped, culture declined, and the vault started to deteriorate. What also didn't help were Alphonse's ego and primary concern of getting people to work as hard and soon as possible, even handing out work assignments to children as soon as they turned 10 years old. The only person he would ever bend rules for was Amata, like when she hosted a party for The Lone Wanderer's 10th birthday, but all she got with it was the occasional short break and "appropriate paternal encouragement".
As time went on Alphonse only became more oppressive and controlling and went to greater lengths to re-enforce his power and control over Vault 101. This included drugging people so that they would be able to continue working, forcing the youth to swear allegiance during the Generalized Occupational Aptitude Test when they where 16 years old, something which he insisted on watching over to ensure the desired outcome, hand-picking the vault security guards, taking a youth gang called the Tunnel Snakes under his wing and having them deal with problems that the guards were unqualified to handle, reinstating the post of vault loyalty inspector, installing propaganda, and even tailing Amata, showing that he didn't even trust his own daughter.
Trivia[]
- If he is killed in the main quest "Escape!", Allen Mack will take over as the new Overseer of Vault 101 in the main quest "Trouble on the Homefront", and unlike Almodovar, Overseer Mack cannot be reasoned with peacefully by the Lone Wanderer, prompting the player to kill him.
- If the player follows him in "Growing Up Fast", and overhears him, he will talk to a Vault 101 Security Guard commenting that he only showed up to the Lone' Wanderer's birthday because Amata is friends with him, and orders him to conclude the Lone Wanderer's birthday party and make everyone go back to work.
