“ I guess this is it. Not much air left now. Minutes, maybe. And this is what I have to show for it. I guess the joke's *gasps for air* on me. Prolly shouldn't *gasps for air* have killed... all those people, prolly shoulda stayed at home... and taken care of my ma. She... always used to say people who... murder and steal... die bad in the end. Said they... *gasps for air and dies* „ ~ Allen's last words before his death.
Allen Marks is an overarching antagonist in the 2010 action-roleplaying video game Fallout: New Vegas. He was a deranged treasure hunter and murderer who was addicted to collecting Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps in an attempt to claim a prize made by the company as part of a promotion campaign before the Great War.
He was voiced by Jesse Burch.
Fallout: New Vegas[]
Allen Marks was once a normal man who lived at home with his mother. One day, he heard tales of the legendary Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps, obtaining fifty of which would supposedly lead to a prize to be redeemed at the Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters. Allen became obsessed with achieving this reward and embarked on a quest to find them all, brutally murdering those he came across who happened to be collecting such caps as well.
Eventually, Allen did collect fifty star caps, and he travelled to the Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters to claim the fabled treasure. Upon arrival, he found that the so-called "prize" was nothing more than a fake deputy badge and some normal Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle caps. He was then locked in an airtight room, where he recorded a holotape with the last of his breath, reminiscing on his mother's quote, "Those who murder and steal will die bad in the end." Allen accepted his death, realizing that he deserved it. He felt horrible for all the people he murdered, but acknowledged that there was nobody else to blame but him.
An unknown amount of time later, a wanderer called the Courier began collecting Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps themselves. A man named Malcolm Holmes began stalking them and eventually confronted them, explaining that due to their initial reaction to the bottle caps, they must've been unaware of their sheer value.
He then went on, saying that a man named Allen Marks had gained a reputation for attacking people who owned star bottle caps, and that it was highly dangerous to openly carry them due to people robbing each other for them. He reveals that he used to hunt the caps several years prior before abandoning the hobby, so he knew what he was talking about.
Eventually, the Courier did find the prize at the Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters. While finding little more than a measly toy deputy badge and regular Sunset Sarsaparilla caps, they did discover Marks' corpse and his pistol, which proved to be a better reward than all of the other useless junk in there.
