- "We have thousands of probe droids searching the galaxy. I want proof, not leads!"
- ―Admiral Kendal Ozzel
The Viper probe droid, commonly referred to as the Imperial probe droid, was a model of probe droid manufactured by Arakyd Industries[1] that was used by the Galactic Empire[2] and, later, the New Republic,[6] for deep space exploration and reconnaissance. The droid had five manipulator arms, a blaster and a communicator. They also featured a self-destruct mechanism, repulsorlift engines,[2] and a sensor suite.[3] The 11-3K variant of the droid was used on Vandor.[11] During the Galactic Civil War, Death Squadron[10] launched Project Swarm, an operation which deployed 100,000 Viper droids[12] across the galaxy in hyperdrive pods, in order to find the Rebellion's base. A probe deployed to the planet Hoth eventually found the base, which set into action the evacuation and battle that took place soon after.[10] The droids communicated using Omnisignal unicode.[13] After the Fall of the Empire, Gideon's Imperial remnant still used these probe droids.[7]
Viper probe droids performed a large range of missions, from searching planets for signs of pirates and criminals. to conducting sensor scans of areas the Empire wanted to investigate. The droids used their sensors to probe wreckage and map terrain. They were equipped with powerful transceivers, which were used to relay their discoveries to Imperial-class Star Destroyers and intelligence outposts for further analysis. Viper probe droids were also proficient at infiltration.[3]
