Taarja was a spoken trade language[2] that was used in the galaxy.[1] Around 34 ABY,[4] Taarja was spoken by the Ungrila Yasto Attsmun while on board the yacht Undisputed Victor as it sailed away from Canto Bight[1] on the planet Cantonica.[5]

The Chiss Ascendancy used Taarja to communicate with the Paccosh during a Mission to the Rapacc system[2] in about 19 BBY.[6] Chiss caregiver Mitth'ali'astov did not like to speak Taarja, but was capable nevertheless. She described the sounds of the language as "angular."[2] The Kilji species and the Grysk "Jixtus" used Taarja to communicate with the Chiss during several confrontations. The Taarja word for "instructions" also meant "suggestions" or "orders," and Qilori chose to use it to annoy Kilji General Crofyp while serving aboard the Kilji war cruiser Anvil.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

In the Star Wars canon, Taarja first appeared in the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi.[5] It was first identified in the Star Wars By the Numbers video "Every Language in Star Wars Movies," which was posted on the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel in 2019.[1]

In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Taarja was a trade language that first appeared in the 2006 novel Outbound Flight, by Timothy Zahn.[7]
