The Kenobi family was a human family from the planet Stewjon. One member of the family was Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. As a Force-sensitive child, Obi-Wan was taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, leaving his family to be trained in the ways of the Force.

During a mission to rescue Princess Leia Organa in the year 9 BBY, Obi-Wan recalled vague memories he had of his family before being taken into the Jedi Order, including a baby he believed to be his younger brother. Having joined the Order at a young age, Obi-Wan had all but completely forgotten his mother, father, and the baby by the time of his exile during the Great Jedi Purge and Imperial Era.

During the rise of the Galactic Empire, Obi-Wan lived on Tatooine and assumed the alias "Ben Kenobi," changing his given name in order to hide from the New Order. After his death in 0 BBY, Obi-Wan was remembered as a legendary Jedi. Ben Solo, the nephew of Luke Skywalker, was named after Obi-Wan.

The forgotten family[]

The Kenobi family was a human family that consisted of Obi-Wan Kenobi, his father and mother, and a baby he believed was his brother.^[2] Born on the planet Stewjon^[3] in 57 BBY^[7] during the Republic Era, Obi-Wan was three years old when he joined the Jedi Order as a result of his connection to the Force, which was considered late.^[8] In the Galactic Republic, it was considered an honor for a family to offer a Force-sensitive child to the Jedi Order for training, which traditionally began for initiates at a very young age.^[9]

While on a mission to Dallenor, Obi-Wan was asked about his life before the Jedi Order by his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan told Skywalker that he did not remember much about his early life; he only knew that he left his homeworld at a young age, and was taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after being identified as Force-sensitive. Skywalker, having joined the Order at a much later time in his life than other Jedi, drew comparisons between his experience as a Padawan and that of his master, which in turn contributed to his insecurity and self-doubt.^[6]

Obi-Wan only retained vague memories of his biological family. Although he wished that he could remember them more clearly, he regarded the Order as his new family.^[2] In 9 BBY,^[10] Obi-Wan shared what little he could remember about his original family with Princess Leia Organa while attempting to return her to Alderaan.^[2]

Obi-Wan Kenobi[]

Obi-Wan was raised alongside other Force-sensitive younglings in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where he learned the ways of the Force from Grand Master Yoda^[3] before becoming the Padawan of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. He ascended to the rank of Jedi Knight by defeating the Sith Lord Darth Maul^[1] in 32 BBY,^[5] and during the Clone Wars, served as a Jedi Master on the Jedi High Council as well as a Jedi General in the Grand Army of the Republic. As a result of the Great Jedi Purge and the Sith's return to power through the Galactic Empire, Obi-Wan fled into exile as one of the few remaining Jedi to escape the purge of Order 66, relocating to the planet Tatooine in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories.^[11]

During the Galactic Civil War, Obi-Wan was killed by his former apprentice, the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader^[4] in 0 BBY.^[5] However, he succeeded in preserving his consciousness after becoming one with the Force,^[4] and thereby gained the ability to manifest as a Force spirit after death.^[12]

Legacy[]

Obi-Wan was remembered as a legendary Jedi by the time of the New Republic Era. The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa was named Ben Solo in memory of Obi-Wan. Solo felt pressured to live up to the reputation of his namesake whom he never met, and ultimately discarded the name which he had grown to hate.^[13] Forsaking the teachings of his uncle Luke Skywalker, the former Ben Solo changed his name to Kylo Ren and became the dark side apprentice of Supreme Leader Snoke.^[14]

Behind the scenes[]

The screenplay for the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi originally included the idea that Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's adoptive uncle, and Obi-Wan Kenobi were brothers.^[15] Such concept didn't make it in the finished film.^[16] The 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones confirmed that Kenobi and Lars weren't related; Owen being Anakin Skywalker's adoptive brother instead.^[17]

One of the early ideas behind Rey's lineage involved her being Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter.^[18] While the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker revealed that she was related to Sheev Palpatine, director J.J. Abrams reconsidered the idea of making Rey part of the Kenobi family during filming; Daisy Ridley was unaware what the final decision would be until shooting concluded.^[19]
