"I engaged the jump drive for a trip in outsystem. It took about two hours. When I got out, it was 200 years later."
―Bosbit Matarcher on a hyperspace jump he engaged in 212 BBY that transported him to 22 BBY[1]

212 before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) was a year during the Great Peace of the Republic era. Beginning nearly 800 years previously, this time period marked widespread exploration into the Outer Rim by the Galactic Republic and the opening of the Deep Core. In 212 BBY, Delemede–native Bosbit Matarcher attempted to make a hyperspace jump in a recently bought Delemedian starhopper. However, Matarcher's starship had a faulty relativistic shield—which guarded against the strange bends in time and space associated with hyperspace travel—and during the jump, Matarcher was transported 190 years into the future.

Proem[]

In 1000 BBY, the New Sith Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Brotherhood of Darkness came to an end. The Supreme Chancellor at the time, Tarsus Valorum, reorganized the Senate through the Ruusan Reformations,[7] and the Jedi Order became a branch of the Republic Judicial Department.[8]

The galaxy in 212 BBY[]

By the year 212 BBY, the Great Peace of the Republic era—the period of time that followed the Ruusan Reformation—was nearly eight hundred years in the making.[9] The Republic continued its expansion into the Deep Core and previously uncharted Wild Space areas that later became part of the Outer Rim Territories.[7]

Around 212 BBY, Bosbit Matarcher, a thirty-five standard year old Human male from the then–shoddy planet of Delemede, bought a Delemedian starhopper. Thinking he had gotten a good deal for the starship, Matarcher boarded his starhopper and left Delemede, hoping to make a quick jump outsystem. However, when Matarcher engaged his vessel's hyperdrive, the ship's relativistic shield, which protected the ship from the irregular bends in time and space associated with hyperspace travel, malfunctioned.[1]

Impact[]

Following 212 BBY, the Republic continued its expansion, and the Great Peace of the Republic lasted for over 150 years. Meanwhile, when Matarcher emerged from hyperspace, he discovered that much had changed for the galaxy. Although Matarcher experienced only a two hour journey, for the rest of the galaxy, 190 years had passed, putting Matarcher in the year 22 BBY,[1] the last year of the Great Peace of the Republic era.[9]

Matarcher, now a 225 standard year old man, gained brief notoriety for the extremely unusual malfunction that sent him 190 years into the future. Matarcher received a minor interview by the HoloNet News, during which Matarcher stated he would be returning to Delemede, but this time, he would be flying transit. Matarcher also said he was happy the malfunction had occurred; when he had left Delemede in 212 BBY, the planet was in a state in disrepair, but in 22 BBY, Delemede was a thriving.[1]

Notable events[]

  • Circa 212 BBY, Bosbit Matarcher unintentionally time travels 190 years into the future, due to faulty relativistic shielding on his recently bought starship.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

212 BBY was first indirectly mentioned in the in-universe HoloNet News Vol. 531 48 article, "225-year Old Man's Secret? Time Dilation." In the article, it is stated that Matarcher was thirty–five standard years old, and upon time traveling, was 225 standard years old, signifying that Matarcher traveled 190 years through time. Since the article is set in the year 22 BBY, it can then be assumed that Matarcher's journey began around the year 212 BBY. 212 BBY was again indirectly mentioned in Bosbit Matarcher's entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.

  2. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, Vol. I, p. 363 ("Great Peace of the Republic") establishes that the Great Peace of the Republic lasted between the Ruusan campaign and the beginning of the Clone Wars, which The New Essential Chronology dates to 1000 BBY and 22 BBY, respectively.
  3. SWTOR mini Galactic History on The Old Republic's official website (article) (backup link) dates the Tho Yor Arrival, as described in Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi 0, to the year BTC 32,800 of the calendar based on the date of the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant. Since the difference between that calendar and the Galactic Standard Calendar—based on the date of the Battle of Yavin—was 3,653 years per the reasoning here, the Tho Yor Arrival must have taken place in the year 36,453 BBY of the latter dating system. Therefore, the difference between the Galactic Standard Calendar and the dating system based on the Tho Yor Arrival that is featured in Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void must be 36,453 years.
  4. Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia places the Treaty of Coruscant, which served as the zero point of a calendar adopted by the Galactic Senate following the conclusion of the Great Galactic War per SWTOR mini Galactic History on The Old Republic's official website (article) (backup link), in the year 3653 BBY of the Galactic Standard Calendar, which was based around the date of the Battle of Yavin. Thus, the difference between the two dating systems is 3,653 years.
  5. The New Essential Chronology establishes that the zero point of the calendar introduced by Tarsus Valorum was the Ruusan Reformation. The book places that event in the year of 1000 BBY of the Galactic Standard Calendar—which was based around the date of the Battle of Yavin—therefore establishing a difference of one thousand years between the two dating systems.
  6. Per the reasoning here, the Battle of Yavin, the zero point in the Galactic Standard Calendar per The New Essential Chronology, can be placed in 35:3:8 under the Great ReSynchronization dating system, thereby confirming the placement of the division between each Galactic Standard Calendar year as the third month in the Great ReSynchronization year. Thus, there is a two-month, seven day gap between the two dating systems, with the first two months of a GrS year being the last two of the preceding Galactic Standard Calendar year, and there is a total difference of 35 years and 2 months between the two systems.
