Plot[]
Differences between the book and movie[]
- In the beginning of the book, Sonic and Dr. Robotnik share a small bit of dialogue during their battle that is not present in the beginning of the film.
- Sonic's powers are explicitly referred to as chaos energy in the book. The echidna tribe is hunting him in order to harness his chaos energy and conquer the planet. The source of Sonic's power and the echidnas' motives are not revealed in the film.
- In the book, the Mushroom Planet is described as a luscious green jungle filled with bright, colorful mushrooms, similar to Mushroom Hill.
- When Sonic was younger, the book tells readers that he witnessed Longclaw die before heading to Earth, whereas the movie implies that she stayed alive to fend off the echidnas.
- During the scene where Tom first encounters Sonic, an extra scene is added in the book where he is waiting to open the door and wondering if the raccoons somehow managed to turn on the radio due to hearing Sonic talking.
- The scene where Tom and Robotnik talk about foruma and milk were cut out. Likely due to that adult joke not being able to squeezed in a book for children unlike in the film.
- In the movie, when Tom tries to ditch Sonic and the latter replies that he does not know where San Francisco is, Sonic tries to find San Francisco himself, only to end up in the Pacific Ocean. This scene does not happen in the book.
- Before the bar fight in the book, Sonic starts the bar fight by kicking the "three-hundred-pound biker" instead of the biker approaching Sonic and Tom like in the movie.
- Sonic being knocked out in a explosion from the Badnik is replaced with an scene where Robotink attempt to use his truck to run Sonic and Tom off the road.
- The book features Sonic and Tom discussing Sonic's lightning powers and their connection to his emotions at the top of the Transamerica Pyramid. This exchange was planned to take place at Rachel's house in the film, but was cut.
- Robotnik's machines are called "Botniks" in the book, and Sonic is the one who comes up with the term "Badnik". In the film, Robotnik's robots are not given an explicit name, though he himself nicknamed them "Badniks".
- In the book, Sonic never gives Robotnik his nickname of "Eggman". Instead, he calls him "Robuttnik".
- In the book, Agent Stone is the government official who visits Tom and Maddie at the end, and he gives them a government radio receiver instead of an Olive Garden gift card.
- In the original film, the post-credits scene that features Miles "Tails" Prower is played after Dr. Robotnik's mid-credits scene on the Mushroom Planet. In the book, it is the other way around.
- In the book, when Dr. Robotnik gives his monologue on the Mushroom Planet, his log is stated to be on its 45th day, whereas the film places the monologue on the 87th day.
Trivia[]
- Although this quote is not present in the film, Sonic calling Dr. Robotnik, "Ro-butt-nik", in the novelization is one of Sonic's most famous insults to Robotnik in the original Sonic cartoons and comics.
- On the cover of the book, Sonic is seen wearing basic red and white shoes which he is nowhere wearing in the actual film. This was used in some stock artworks of him, instead of wearing his signature red and white sneakers.
