The Jump Stand[1] (ハシラ[2] Hashira?) is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of block used in the Special Stages and Bonus Stages.

Description[]

The Jump Stands are red and white colored circular blocks that appear exclusively in the Special Stages and Bonus Stages. They are fairly standard blocks, similar to the square cubes in the Special Stage. They do nothing when touching them, but they provide a safe surface for the player to land on or jump off.

Game appearances[]

Jump Stand

The Jump Stands first appeared in the Special Stages of the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). In this game, The only role of the Jump Stands is to give Sonic a good place to land on and to jump off safely. They are usually placed in the corners of halls or routes. The game also feature another type of Jump Stands that are transparent and set on rows in the mazes. These Jump Stands will turn solid, thereby closing the route they are located in, after the player moves through them.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

Jump Stands made another appearance in the slot machine-type Bonus Stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Despite having an altered look, they function like how they did in the original Sonic the Hedgehog. In this game, Jump Stands are one of the type of blocks in the Bonus Stages that do not turn into Goal blocks after standing on them for while.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I[]

Both regular and transparent types of Jump Stands appear in the Special Stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I where they serve similar roles. Like in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, they are placed on walls and in corners. Also, the fifth Special Stage features narrow sections with rows of transparent Jump Stands. If the player falls into the trap, they have to rotate the narrow way on the rear to get back on the main route.
