Marty and his family returned to Appalachia in 2103 and made their home at the former farm supply store. The family first secured the barn before later returning to begin restoring the location. Marty's father, George, was a cousin of the store's previous owner Lewis, who had died alongside his family during the Great War, and Marty's family claimed the farm supply store as the rightful inheritors.
Marty expressed interest in joining the Brotherhood of Steel. If recruited instead of his brother Colin, Marty moves to Fort Atlas and begins training with the Brotherhood to become a knight.
Field Testing: Marty and Colin are both looking to join the Brotherhood of Steel; however, their mother will only let the Vault Dweller take one of them. The Vault Dweller can choose through dialogue to have Marty join the Brotherhood of Steel and have him become a temporary companion for the rest of the quest when raiding the Orwell Orchards bomb shelter.
Effects of player's actions[]
If Marty is recruited during Field Testing, the player receives the Farmhand weapon instead of the Mind Over Matter for Colin. Marty then travels to Fort Atlas to await initiation in the lobby basement.
If Colin is chosen, Marty can be informed how Colin is doing with the Brotherhood. Marty admits he was pretty sore about not being able to join, but that the choice made him think about his home life differently and to be more grateful for being able to live in a decent place. Upon hearing Colin is training to become a Scribe, Marty is jealous but glad for him, and tells the Vault Dweller to pass a message to not forget about his family. Marty also mentions Carol is handling the choice worse than George because Colin was her baby.
If Marty is recruited, he can be spoken to about the drastic decision Leila Rahmani made. Marty feels her choice was wrong, saying even if Rahmani's heart is in the right place, people need to follow orders to make things work, and he sides with Daniel Shin.
"I... Now that it's over, I won't lie: I was pretty freaked out. I might still be freaked out. My heart's racing and I think I've got the shakes. Is it okay if I get some real training before we do anything like that again?"
"Aw, jeez. I never figured the runt would be the one to go out on an adventure first. Listen, I give him a rough time, but he's my little brother. You let him get hurt, and I'll find you, that's a promise."
"Oh man. That's a heck of a question. I think the Paladin was wrong. We're a military, more or less, right? I don't know much, but I know you gotta follow orders or it all doesn't work. Her heart's in the right place, but Knight Shin's just plain right. I hope they can fix this."
"I'm still committed. I knew there'd be challenges when I came here. Heck, that's why I'm here! But, if I can speak freely...I'm worried. Some folks here looked up to Knight Shin. It might be hard to believe, but his conviction was reassuring. With him gone, we might lose people that liked his way of doing things. I'll stay, though. We need all the people we can get."
↑Vault Dweller: "Everything going all right with training, Marty? Have they made you an Initiate yet?" Marty Putnam: "Nah, I'm still a recruit. To be honest, nobody's really got time for us recruits right now, with everything that's happened. On the upside, at least they let me stay down here instead of the tents outside!" (Marty Putnam's dialogue)
