This article is about the character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For other characters, see Percy.

Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. Being a half-blood is dangerous. It's scary. Most of the time it gets you killed, in painful, nasty ways. If you think you might be one of us, my advice is turn away while you still can, because once you know what you are... they'll sense it too and they'll come for you. Don't say I didn't warn you.
―Percy Jackson narrating his story[src]

Perseus "Percy" Jackson is the titular protagonist in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the half-blood son of Poseidon who discovers his destiny.

Background[]

Percy Jackson is a young boy who lives with his kind and caring mother Sally, and his abrasive and mean step-father Gabe Ugliano. At the age of twelve, he discovers that he is actually the son of Poseidon and that his best friend Grover Underwood is a satyr who has been assigned to protect him. Upon reaching Camp Half-Blood, a camp for young demigods such as himself, he is immediately thrust into adventure with Grover and the daughter of Athena, Annabeth Chase.

Personality[]

Percy is portrayed as being a fairly nice young boy who stands up for others. He can have a cynical edge to him, but is overall motivated to do the right thing. Percy is also something of a smart mouth and usually makes jokes to ease the situation. At the beginning of the series, Percy feels that the world, and his father for that matter, have neglected him. Because of this, he is very close to his mother whom he sees as the only nice thing in his life. When his background as a demigod is unveiled, Percy becomes incredulous at how much his life has been upended. He eventually gets used to it and grows to accept the life of a hero, regardless of all the danger that comes with it.

Physical appearance[]

Percy is depicted as being a young, white, teenage boy with messy blond hair. His clothing consists of a blue t-shirt, green plaid jacket, blue denim jeans, a pair of blue vans sneakers, and a necklace.

Like all the other kids at Camp Half-Blood, he dons an orange shirt and occasionally Greek inspired armor.

Powers and abilities[]

Percy has control over all forms of water and can bend it to his will. Because of this, he is also capable of submerging himself completely without the need to come up for air. He is also equipped with a pen that transforms into a bronze sword (named Riptide) and that he is incapable of losing. Percy also possesses superhuman durability, as he can withstand a swipe from the Chimera and a kick from Ares himself.

Role in the series[]

The Lightning Thief[]

Percy Jackson was born to Sally Jackson and, unknowingly, Poseidon, and raised in New York City. As a child, Percy was a somewhat troubled child. He was constantly getting in trouble, usually through no fault of his own, had difficulty understanding what his mother was planning for him, and apparently kept seeing things that weren't there. Nevertheless, he loved his mother who would treat him to blue foods and taught him about Greek mythology, even turning some stories on their heads. Percy went through several different schools, making more enemies than friends. That all changed when at the age of 12, he entered Yancy Academy and met Grover Underwood a similar outcast who also had a fascination with Greek mythology. However, the two of them would become the subject of ridicule from student Nancy Bobofit and the enigmatic teacher Mrs. Dodds.

While visiting the museum, Percy was given a pen by his teacher Mr. Brunner who believed that Percy was destined for great things. Afterwards, two things happened. Percy, having had enough of Nancy, somehow "pushed" her into a fountain with tremendous force, and then Mrs. Dodds suddenly sprouted wings and turned into a fury, attacking Percy and demanding something back from him. The pen that Mr. Brunner gave Percy turned into a sword and he stabbed her, turning her to dust. Despite all of this happening out in the open, no one recalls anything happening, including Grover and Mr. Brunner who deny that Mrs. Dodds existed at all. Percy is promptly kicked out by of Yancy Academy when Grover claims that Percy did indeed intentionally push Nancy into the fountain.

Percy returns home to find his step-father Gabe Ugliano involved in one of his terrible gambling habits. After telling Sally that something weird happened at school, Sally announces to Gabe that she and Percy are leaving for the weekend to the beach house, which he reluctantly agrees to. While at the cabin, Sally tells Percy that his father was a god from the stories she used to tell him. He is in disbelief of the news until Grover arrives, with goat legs, and confirms the story. Grover reveals that he got him kicked out of Yancy on purpose so that he could take him to where he is supposed to go, Camp Half-Blood. On the way there, they are attacked by a Minotaur who overturns their car. Sally gives up her life to protect Percy who, angered over his mother's fate, attacks the Minotaur and manages to kill it with its own horn.

Percy passes out and awakens in Camp Half-Blood where Grover confirms what happened last night. He also meets Dionysus, who goes by Mr. D, and learns that Mr. Brunner is actually the centaur Chiron. Due to not having been claimed by his godly parent yet, Percy is placed in the Hermes cabin where he meets the kindly Luke Castellan, but runs afoul of the Ares child Clarisse La Rue. He also meets the stoic Annabeth Chase who seems to take an immediate interest in him. Percy tries to fit in and is selected for Annabeth's team of capture the flag. He manages to outwit Clarisse and is suddenly claimed by Poseidon. Chiron believes it is time to send Percy on his first quest. While reluctant, Grover comes at him with the news that Sally is alive in the Underworld, motivating him to take the quest.

Percy learns that Zeus' Master Bolt has been stolen and that he has been blamed for the theft. To learn what to do, he goes to see the Oracle who tells Percy "You shall go west, and face the god who has turned,/ You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned,/ You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend,/ And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end." Percy decides to take Annabeth, as he trusts that she will do anything to finish the quest, and Grover, because he is his closest friend.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - 1x03 - We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium (11)

Percy faces off against Medusa.

The trio take off by bus where they run into Mrs. Dodds, who is really Alecto and still after Percy. They run from her and end up at Auntie Em's Garden Gnome Emporium and meet Medusa who attempts to kill Annabeth and Grover to "free" Percy. The trio behead her and use it to defeat Alecto. They catch a train afterwards where they are attacked by Echidna and the Chimera. They are chased to the Arch Gateway in St. Louis which Percy falls off and lands in the nearby river. He encounters a Nereid who tells him that Poseidon is watching him. Percy concludes that he and his friends need to get to Santa Monica quickly.

While on the road, they encounter Ares who meets up with them at a diner down the road. Percy learns that Gabe is making money off of his and Sally's disappearance and Ares offers to help them further along their journey in exchange for them getting his shield back from the abandoned theme park Waterland, which is owned by his brother Hephaestus. Percy and Annabeth are forced to go there without Grover whom Ares keeps as collateral. Percy begins to see the gods as childish beings that backstab one another and lets a chair, rigged to trap people, encase him so that Annabeth can reclaim the shield. Annabeth refuses to leave him and Hephaestus sympathetically releases him.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - 1x05 - We Take a Zebra to Vegas (4)

Percy and his friends make a hasty retreat from the Lotus Casino.

Ares sends Percy and his friends to Las Vegas, via a truck full of animals, and tells them to meet with Hermes. Grover reveals that he believes that Clarisse was the one who stole the Master Bolt and they tell Luke via an Iris message. Upon arriving in Las Vegas, they head to the Lotus Casino where Hermes is staying. Hermes refuses to help them, which is made complicated when they realize that the casino alters their perception of time and has caused Grover to forget their quest. They steal Hermes' taxi cab, though he seemed to know they would do that, and manage to escape, teleporting to Santa Monica.

Percy learns too late that Zeus and Poseidon have gone to war with one another, but ever more determined to rescue his mother, he is given a four magic pearls by the Nereid so that they can escape the Underworld more easily. Percy incapacitates his half-brother Procrustes at his waterbed store before he and his friends enter the Underworld. They run afoul of Charon and Cerberus (the latter of whom eats one of the pearls), the Asphodel Fields (where Annabeth is forced to leave back to the surface), and nearly get pulled into the Pit of Tartarus where Percy discovers that the Master Bolt was in his backpack, the same one that Ares had given him.

They finally make it to Hades domain and meet him in person where not only does he have Sally safe from death, he was also expecting the return of his Helm of Darkness. Percy, who had been having nightmares of someone speaking to him, realizes that he has been communicating with Kronos. He decides to fulfill his end of getting the helm back to rescue his mother and he and Grover leave.

Percy defeats Ares with a tidal wave.

Back on earth, Percy confronts Ares and the two battle on the beach with Percy successfully summoning a wave and slashes him in the heel. Ares curses Percy and disappears, leaving the Helm behind. Alecto returns, revealing what her actual goal was, and reclaims the Helm. Percy decides to go to Mount Olympus (located in the Empire State Building) alone to return the Master Bolt. Upon arriving, he meets Zeus who still insists that the war continue. This angers Percy who tells him that he and his family are flawed individuals. Zeus prepares to strike him, but Poseidon arrives and announces his surrender. Percy finally has time with Poseidon and gets words of encouragement from him, before returning to Camp Half-Blood.

Percy is hailed a hero, but is confused as to why Clarisse is still at camp. When he speaks with Luke privately, he comes to the startling realization that Luke, who holds a grudge against his father, stole the Bolt. The Pit of Tartarus incident was supposed to deliver it straight to Kronos. Percy and Luke fight, but it is broken up by Annabeth, allowing Luke to flee. Percy, having finally found a sense of purpose, decides to leave Camp Half-Blood for the year and return home to Sally, now that Gabe is gone, and is finally able to resume a good life.

Trivia[]

  • In all prior adaptations, Percy is depicted as having black hair, just like in the books. This is the first time he is portrayed with blonde hair, Walker Scobell's natural hair color.
  • In the books, Percy also had the ability to remain dry when underwater. This was most likely removed from the series due to the complexity of the effect.
  • Prior to Walker Scobell portraying him, Percy was played by Logan Lerman in the two live-action film adaptations and Chris McCarrell in the Broadway musical.
  • Lerman praised Scobell's performance as the title character stating that he, "[couldn't] imagine a better fit."[2]
